JAX - WR Troy Williamson takes over as starter

Source: Vito Stellino - The Florida Times-Union

Vito Stellino, of The Florida Times-Union, reports Jacksonville Jaguars WR Mike Sims-Walker (ankle) is no longer in the starting lineup, as he has lost the starting job to veteran WR Troy Williamson, who emerged as a big-play threat during Sims-Walker's absence.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

What a tremendous turnaround for Troy Williamson! He came over last year from the Vikings, but was injured and many expected him to be on the roster bubble at the start of training camp. Williamson has stayed healthy so far this year, and has become a consistent target for QB David Garrard.

KC - Columnist: Team not planning on QB Matt Cassel starting week 1?

Source: Adam Teicher - the Kansas City Star

Adam Teicher, of the Kansas City Star, reports that the Chiefs are "clearly" not expecting Matt Cassel to play in the season opener vs. the Baltimore Ravens. Tyler Thigpen took most of the first-team snaps in Cassel's absence at practice on Tuesday, but Thigpen said the coaches haven't told that he's the starter until Cassel returns.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It is the Ravens, so perhaps it's better than Cassel sits this one out. You probably didn't draft him to be your starter, but if case you did, you might want to check the matchup of your #2 QB. It's worth noting that Adam Schefter of ESPN was reporting yesterday that Cassel would be ready for Week 1. We'll see.

HOU - QB Matt Schaub, WR Kevin Walter 'day-to-day', QB Matt Schaub confident he will play in opener

Source: John McClain - the Houston Chronicle

John McClain, of the Houston Chronicle, reports that Texans QB Matt Schaub and WR Kevin Walter are "day-to-day" for the regular season opener vs. the Jets, according to head coach Gary Kubiak. Kubiak also said Schaub was confident he would play in the season opener. Andre Davis would replace Walter in the starting lineup if he can't go.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We wouldn't let either injury affect the place of either player on your draft board. You might even be able to get Schaub a round or two later than he has been going lately because his injury happened on national TV.

DEN - Team expects QB Kyle Orton, QB Chris Simms to be ready for week one

Source: Mike Florio - Profootballtalk.com

Profootballtalk.com reports that the Broncos believe both Chris Simms and Kyle Orton will be ready for the season opener Sunday, September 13 against Cincinnati.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ready to play, and ready to play well are two different things. We like the Bengals to open the season 1-0 against the beleaguered Broncos.

CIN - QB Carson Palmer runs some plays in practice

Source: Joe Reedy - the Cincinnati Enquirer

Joe Reedy, of the Cincinnati Enquirer, reports that QB Carson Palmer ran some plays with the starting offense for the first time since August 14, and looked "OK".

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We still think you should trust Palmer as your starting QB as long as you can get him as the 9th or 10th QB off the board in the seventh round or later. Just make sure you back him up with a dependable #2 like Matt Hasselbeck or David Garrard.

DEN - QB Kyle Orton could miss Week 1

Source: Mike Klis - The Denver Post

Mike Klis, of The Denver Post, reports Denver Broncos QB Kyle Orton (finger) is in danger of missing the team's Week 1 game. According to two league sources, Orton's finger was not fractured during the team's last preseason game, but Orton did suffer an open dislocation of the right knuckle, which would explain the blood dripping from his finger and the excruciating pain he endured as the dislocated finger was popped back into place.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A dislocation is not as serious as a fracture, and Orton claims that he will be ready to go for the regular season opener against the Bengals. Orton and Chris Simms will not play this week, which leaves only rookie Tom Brandstater and journeyman Ingle Martin to take snaps in the Broncos preseason finale.

DEN - RB Knowshon Moreno participates in practice Tuesday

Source: Frank Schwab - the Colorado Springs Gazette

Frank Schwab, of the Colorado Springs Gazette, reports Denver Broncos RB Knowshon Moreno (knee) participated in practice Tuesday, Sept. 1, but wore a non-contact jersey and did not get a majority of the reps. Head coach Josh McDaniels would not rule Moreno out of the team's final preseason game.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We still wouldn't trust Moreno in week 1, especially with the likelihood of a banged up QB starting for the Broncos.

CIN - OT Andre Smith fractures foot

Source: Associated Press

The Associated Press reports Cincinnati Bengals OT Andre Smith (foot) suffered a fracture in his left foot during practice Tuesday, Sept. 1, and will miss at least a few weeks. Head coach Marvin Lewis said the injury will not require surgery.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The guy holds out forever, signs a deal and then breaks his foot hours later. Unreal but not surprising at all. I can't wait to see the inside story for this on Hard Knocks on HBO. Wonder if it'll make this week's edition. Smith was already not expected to contribute much early, but this setback could effectively cost him the season because there isn't much time for rookies to get up to speed in the grind of the regular season.

DET - QB Kevin O'Connell claimed

Source: Mike Reiss - the Boston Globe

Mike Reiss, of the Boston Globe, reports the Detroit Lions have claimed free-agent QB Kevin O'Connell (Patriots) off waivers, according to a source.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Another sign that Martin Mayhew and Jim Schwartz have this franchise on the right track. At the very least, O'Connell could garner a draft pick in a trade. He could also become the long term backup to Matthew Stafford if Drew Stanton doesn't work out.

BAL - RB Ray Rice to serve as red zone threat

Source: Jon Gallo - CBSSports.com

CBSSports.com reports Baltimore Ravens RB Ray Rice will take carries away from RB Willis McGahee and FB Le'Ron McClain, including in the red zone. Rice will also be heavily used out of the backfield for screen passes.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is contradictory to a report yesterday from Jamison Hensley, of the Baltimore Sun, that noted Willis McGahee has carried the ball 5 of the 6 times the Ravens have run inside the 5-yard line so far this preseason. The reality is the Ravens will continue to use a 3-headed RBBC, and may give all of the backs a chance to carry at the goal line.

MIN - QB Brett Favre improving, still has work to do

Source: Associated Press

The Associated Press reports Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress said QB Brett Favre's play was much improved during the team's preseason game Monday, Aug. 31, however Favre still has work to do. 'He did some really good things as far as putting the ball where it needed to be,' Childress said. 'He will be the first to tell you that he missed a few reads. He made a couple of nice plays with his feet and he had enough of the pocket presence to move around when he had to and still get the football where it needed to be.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Childress is clearly going to live or die with Favre, so this one will be even more interesting to watch.

MIN - QB Brett Favre doesn't believe he has cracked rib

Source: Associated Press

The Associated Press reports Minnesota Vikings QB Brett Favre (rib) said following the team's preseason game Monday, Aug. 31, he doesn't believe he has a cracked rib. Favre does believe, however, that he has some kind of rib injury. 'There is nothing you can do about it first of all, secondly, I don't believe it is (cracked),' Favre said. 'It doesn't feel great but I think I will be fine. We have not done an X-ray yet. If it is cracked, there is nothing you can do about it.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

More scrutiny for Favre's ribs. He's right though, if they're cracked, there isn't much to do. He'll play and he'll be fine. Just like he has for the last zillion games he's started.

KC - Agent says QB Tyler Thigpen has broken ribs

Source: Bill Williamson - ESPN.com

Bill Williamson, of ESPN.com, reports Joel Turner, agent for Kansas City Chiefs QB Tyler Thigpen (ribs), said Thigpen is playing with two broken ribs, which he suffered during the team's first preseason game. Turner said Thigpen plans to play through the broken ribs.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The only Chiefs QB who isn't injured (Brodie Croyle) is the one most likely to get injured if he gets on the field.

NYJ - WR Chansi Stuckey to get first opportunity as No. 2 WR

Source: Tim Graham - ESPN.com

Tim Graham, of ESPN.com, reports New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said the No. 2 wide receiver job will be done by committee this season, but WR Chansi Stuckey will get the first opportunity as the second receiver.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Stuckey had a big night on Saturday, but his two long receptions came on busted coverages, so we're not buying into the Stuckey hype just yet.

JAX - WR Mike Sims-Walker back on practice field

Source: Vito Stellino - The Florida Times-Union

Vito Stellino, of The Florida Times-Union, reports Jacksonville Jaguars WR Mike Sims-Walker (ankle) said he feels cursed. Sims-Walker has spent the past three weeks rehabbing a high ankle sprain. 'I got a curse ever since I was drafted. I feel every time I come out and start playing well and try to get my groove back, something bad always comes down on me,' Sims-Walker said of his numerous injury problems. He has returned to the field this week and hopes to play in the team's preseason finale.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Walker is very talented, but has had trouble staying healthy his entire pro career. He now finds himself outside of the starting lineup, as Troy Williamson is now projected to start opposite of Torry Holt. If Walker could ever stay healthy, he could become the best receiver to own in Jacksonville.

OAK - WR Javon Walker ahead of WR Johnnie Lee Higgins on depth chart

Source: Jerry McDonald - InsideBayArea.com

Jerry McDonald, of InsideBayArea.com, reports that Raiders head coach Tom Cable said Javon Walker, not Johnnie Lee Higgins, would start if rookie Louis Murphy can't go because of a foot sprain, which indicates that Walker has moved up to the #3 WR on the depth chart while Chaz Schilens is out.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Walker's comeback continues. Players have come back to prominence from more unlikely scenarios, but we're not counting on much from Walker as long as he's a Raider no matter how good he looks.

DEN - QB Tom Brandstater to start Thursday

Source: Associated Press

Updating a previous report, The Associated Press reports Denver Broncos QB Tom Brandstater will start the team's final preseason game Thursday, Sept. 3.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This should be a terrific chance to watch Brandstater's raw ability and progress learning the McDaniels system in action.

SF - Offensive coordinator wants to run 60% of the time

Source: Matt Maiocco - the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat

Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat, reports on his Twitter feed that the 49ers offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye said he wants to run the ball 60% of the time.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Many teams aspire to this kind of run-heavy split, almost none achieve it. Still, the 49ers have an offensive line of road graders, and Mike Singletary seems to have the team playing very fired up these days. Frank Gore looks like an excellent consolation prize for those looking to go RB at the end of the first round, and Glen Coffee is a must-handcuff after his outstanding preseason.

MIA - WR Greg Camarillo, WR Brian Hartline getting first-team work

Source: Brian Biggane - the Palm Beach Post

Brian Biggane, of the Palm Beach Post, reports that WR Greg Camarillo and Brian Hartline both got work with the first team intermittently at Dolphins practice on Tuesday, September 1.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Davone Bess was in the slot, so it looks like he is out of the running for the starting job, but this situation has been a moving target. Camarillo still makes for a decent end of the draft flyer in PPR leagues because of his rapport with Chad Pennington. We have a feeling that he'll get the job once he's 100% whether or not he starts at the open of the season.

NE - Several players do not attend practice Tuesday

Source: Mike Reiss - the Boston Globe

Mike Reiss, of the Boston Globe, reports New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman (undisclosed), CB Terrence Wheatley (undisclosed), CB Shawn Springs (undisclosed), RB Laurence Maroney (undisclosed), OL Don Connolly (undisclosed), WR Wes Welker (undisclosed), TE David Thomas (undisclosed), TE Chris Baker (undisclosed), DL Myron Pryor (undisclosed) and LB Shawn Crable (undisclosed) were not present during practice Tuesday, Sept. 1.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Welker has missed a lot of practice and two out of the three preseason games. We know nothing about his injury since he's a Patriot, but it is beginning to make us wonder if Welker will be 100% for the opener.

TB - WR Antonio Bryant, WR Michael Clayton will not play Friday

Source: Charlie Campbell and Jim Flynn - PewterReport.com

Charlie Campbell and Jim Flynn, of PewterReport.com, report Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Antonio Bryant (knee) and WR Michael Clayton (hamstring) will not play in the team's final preseason game Friday, Sept. 4.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We would error on the side of benching Bryant for week 1 because he's been out of action for so long, but we wouldn't be surprised if he has a big game against one of his old teams, the Dallas Cowboys.

BAL - WR Kelley Washington battling for No. 2, No. 3 receiver spots

Source: Jon Gallo - CBSSports.com

CBSSports.com reports Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said WR Kelley Washington is competing to be the team's No. 2 or No. 3 wide receiver.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Washington keeps climbing up the depth chart because of the injuries and inconsistencies in front of him. The Ravens need all the help they can get at the WR position, and it wouldn't surprise us to see Washington become Joe Flacco's favorite deep target.

DET - RB Kevin Smith unlikely to play preseason finale

Source: Jimmy Trombley - CBSSports.com

CBSSports.com reports Detroit Lions RB Kevin Smith (hip) did not practice Tuesday, Sept. 1, and is unlikely to play in the team's preseason finale so that he can be completely healthy for Week 1.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Lions want Smith healthy for the regular season opener, so it's not surprising they will shut him down for the final preseason game.

NYG - WR David Tyree may have tough time making final roster

Source: Tom Canavan - The Associated Press

Tom Canavan, of The Associated Press, reports New York Giants WR David Tyree (knee, groin, hamstring) has battled knee, groin and hamstring problems during training camp. His time with the team may be running short. Tyree did not even play in the team's last preseason game, and he did not practice Monday, Aug. 31. Tyree said he plans to practice Tuesday, Sept. 1, and is preparing to play in the team's final preseason game. The Giants have a lot of young wide receivers, who are also capable of playing special teams, which may make it difficult for Tyree to make the final roster.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Giants will always be grateful to Tyree for catching a pass against his head, with Rodney Harrison draped all over him in Super Bowl 42. However, it's time to move on, and with the youth and depth at wide receiver it will be near impossible for Tyree to make the final cut. If healthy, he could catch on with another team in the league, but should not be counted on at all in any fantasy league.

PHI - QB Donovan McNabb having strong training camp

Source: Jeff McLane - The Philadelphia Inquirer

Jeff McLane, of The Philadelphia Inquirer, reports Philadelphia Eagles QB Donovan McNabb has had a strong training camp. There was only one day during camp that you could say McNabb wasn't sharp. He was also solid, if not spectacular, during his three preseason showings. He hit 60.7 percent of his passes, threw two touchdowns against one interception, and had an 85.7 quarterback rating during exhibition games.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ever since Michael Vick signed with the Eagles there's been sort of a circus-like atmosphere surrounding the team. Behind all the headlines, McNabb's performance has been very sound. Eagles fans and fantasy owners shouldn't worry about Michael Vick taking away a chunk of production from McNabb. The team knows who runs the show, and as long as he's healthy, McNabb should be a top 10 fantasy QB at the end of the year.

PHI - Wildcat will resume when QB Michael Vick is reinstated

Source: Jeff McLane - The Philadelphia Inquirer

Jeff McLane, of The Philadelphia Inquirer, reports Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid said the team is going to continue using their Wildcat package when QB Michael Vick is reinstated by the league. The team doesn't feel Vick entering mid-drive disrupts the continuity of the offense.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This news may upset starter Donovan McNabb, who felt the offense struggled to get into a rhythm because of Vick rotating in and out of the lineup. The Eagles are smart to use Vick as a change of pace QB to keep the defense on their toes.

TB - WR Antonio Bryant, WR Michael Clayton sit out practice Tuesday

Source: Charlie Campbell - PewterReport.com

Charlie Campbell, of PewterReport.com, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers WRs Antonio Bryant (knee) and Michael Clayton (hamstring) did not take part in practice Tuesday, Sept. 1.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Both players returned to practice yesterday, after sitting out for most of the preseason. This could just be a precautionary move by the team as they want both players healthy for the start of the regular season.

BAL - QB Cleo Lemon released

Source: Jason La Canfora - NFL.com

Jason La Canfora, of NFL.com, reports the Baltimore Ravens have released QB Cleo Lemon, according to a source.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Well that didn't last long. The team must feel that John Beck is okay coming back from his injury scare from a couple of weeks ago.

SEA - RB Edgerrin James could play in preseason finale

Source: Eric D. Williams - the Tacoma News-Tribune

Eric D. Williams, from the Tacoma News-Tribune, reports Seahawks head coach Jim Mora said there's a chance running back Edgerrin James could play Thursday if he feels comfortable with the team's offensive scheme. James went through his most extensive work with the team in practice Monday.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're excited to see what James looks like with his new team, and he's anxious to prove that he still has something left in the tank. Julius Jones is the starter for now, but it wouldn't be surprising to see James take over some time during the season.

CFL - CB Adam Jones to play in Canadian Football League

Source: Jim Trotter - SI.com

Jim Trotter, of SI.com, reports free-agent CB Adam Jones (Cowboys) agreed to a one-year deal Monday, Aug. 31, with the Winnepeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League. Jones is expected to join the team as early as Wednesday, Sept. 2.

HOU - QB Matt Schaub believes he will play Friday

Source: Associated Press

The Associated Press reports Houston Texans QB Matt Schaub (ankle) said following the team's preseason game Monday, Aug. 31, he expects to play in the preseason finale Friday, Sept. 4.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Although seeing Schaub gimpy should remind you why a player of his fantasy caliber is falling to QB10 or later in some drafts, it shouldn't keep you from making him your QB1 if you decide to be one of the last owners to take a QB. If anything, the hit his ADP took last night makes him even more attractive as a late QB1.

CAR - RB Jonathan Stewart misses yet another practice

Source: Darin Gantt - the Rock Hill Herald

Darin Gantt, of the Rock Hill Herald, reports that RB Jonathan Stewart missed practice on Monday, August 31.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Stewart continues to slide down draft boards as people realize that he has barely played at all this summer after barely participating in OTAs with this achilles problem. Stewart is ultratalented, but he was injury-prone at Oregon, and it looks like that problem has followed him to the NFL. He's still worth a pick purely for the upside if he falls to the eighth round.

GB - ILB A.J. Hawk may see playing time reduced

Source: Rob Demovsky - the Green Bay Press-Gazette

Rob Demovsky, of the Green Bay Press-Gazette, reports Green Bay Packers LB A.J. Hawk may lose his spot in the nickel defense because the team is considering using LB Nick Barnett and LB Brandon Chillar as the inside linebackers in that formation. If the change is made, Hawk will lose about half of his snaps during the season. Hawk would still be in with the starting defense but would come off the field on obvious passing situations.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hawk may also have to worry about time in the base defense because Desmond Bishop has been much better than him according to most observers. It looks like the #5 pick of the 2006 draft is on the verge of being a bust.
