DEN - QB Kyle Orton injured Sunday
Source: Vaughn McClure - the Chicago Tribune
Vaughn McClure, of the Chicago Tribune, reports Denver Broncos QB Kyle Orton (hand) apparently injured his throwing hand after hitting it on a helmet during the team's preseason game Sunday, Aug. 30.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Broncos are calling Orton's bloody finger an "upper extremity" injury. The injury was to his right (throwing) index finger. He hit it on a defender's hand as he was throwing. His index finger was bleeding enough to cause worry. NBC reported from the sideline that the team said the finger was not broken and that there was no compound fracture which some had worried might have caused the bleeding. Stay tuned. With the injury to Chris Simms, the Broncos are hoping this isn't serious. We think they may look to add Kevin O'Connell now that the Patriots have released him.
KC - QB Matt Cassel could be out two to four weeks
Source: Jason Cole - Yahoo! Sports
Jason Cole, of Yahoo! Sports, reports Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel (knee) has a strained MCL in his right knee and he could miss two to four weeks, according to a team source. The injury is not expected to require surgery, but he could miss the team's Week 1 game. QB Tyler Thigpen would start if Cassel is unable to play.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We're sure the Chiefs are happy they didn't trade away Tyler Thigpen now! This is a bad break for the Chiefs, but could happen again if they don't get better play from the right side of their offensive line.
DEN - WR Jabar Gaffney has fractured thumb
Source: Jeff Legwold - The Denver Post
Jeff Legwold, of The Denver Post, reports Denver Broncos WR Jabar Gaffney (thumb) suffered a fractured thumb during practice Friday, Aug. 28. Gaffney will be out for several weeks while his hand heals.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Ouch. This really hurts the Broncos wide receiver corps, especially with the suspension of Brandon Marshall. Gaffney was expected to start opposite Eddie Royal, with Brandon Stokley working the slot. Because of this injury we could see more of rookie Kenny McKinley, as well as tight end Tony Scheffler.
WAS - RB Clinton Portis will not play Thursday
Source: Ed Sheahin - CBSSports.com
CBSSports.com reports Washington Redskins RB Clinton Portis (ribs) suffered a rib injury Friday, Aug. 28, that kept him out of practice Sunday, Aug. 30. Portis said, "It's nothing serious. I hurt it on the first play of the game (New England). I'll be all right." Head coach Jim Zorn said Portis would not play in the team's final preseason game Thursday, Sept. 3.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
It's not even the final week of the preseason, and Clinton Portis is hurt already. He says it's nothing serious, but as we saw last year - Portis is breaking down. Fantasy palyers that draft Portis need to handcuff Ladell Betts sometime in the later rounds. Savvy fantasy owners that want to block their leaguemates and select Betts earlier than expected, could be rewarded sooner if Portis fails to stay healthy.
NE - QB Tom Brady's shoulder should be fine
Source: Christopher L. Gasper - The Boston Globe
Christopher L. Gasper, of The Boston Globe, reports New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (shoulder) still has a sore right shoulder, but a source close to the situation said there are not any concerns about it at this time.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
It's unlikely we'll get anything but smoke out of the Patriots on this one. But the tentative hope here is that it's not a significant worry.
BUF - WR Terrell Owens should be 100 percent healthy at start of season
Source: Mark Gaughan - The Buffalo News
Mark Gaughan, of The Buffalo News, reports it appears Buffalo Bills WR Terrell Owens (toe) will be 100 percent by the start of the regular season. All indications are his sprained toe is improving. He missed his third straight preseason game Saturday, Aug. 29.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We still wouldn't take Owens as a WR1 because of the chances of an injury to Trent Edwards, which would make the passing offense stall out.
CLE - Quarterback battle continues; QB Brady Quinn does well
Source: NFL.com
Cleveland Browns QB Brady Quinn hit 11-of-15 passes for 128 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions during the team's preseason game against the Tennessee Titans Saturday, Aug. 29. He is battling for the team's starting quarterback duties with QB Derek Anderson. Anderson hit 7-of-11 passes for 77 yards, without throwing any touchdowns or interceptions during the game.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We're calling this one for Quinn. He will be the safer play and he could still develop into a long-term answer at QB. Quinn isn't a great downfield passer, so this could limit Braylon Edwards, but a player like Mike Furrey could emerge as viable end of the bench PPR play because of Quinn's conservative style.
PIT - No problems for QB Ben Roethlisberger
Source: NFL.com
NFL.com reports Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (foot) didn't show any problems with his previously injured foot Saturday, Aug. 29. He hit 15-of-19 passes for 168 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions during his time on the field against the Buffalo Bills.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Roethlisberger is safe to draft as your boring QB2 as about the 15th QB off the board, but we don't think this is a winning backup QB strategy.
NO - No more restrictions for Lance WR Lance Moore
Source: CBSsports.com
CBSsports.com is reporting Saints WR Lance Moore on getting back on the field: "I feel good and I'm ready to keep moving. There's no more restrictions on me obviously now. The season is fast approaching and I'm ready to go. I felt like I'm not quite where I need to be, but for the most part I'm happy with the progress." Moore, who was coming off shoulder surgery this offseason, had four catches for 29 yards and a touchdown against the Raiders on Saturday.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
If Lance Moore can stay healthy he will continue to be an important part of the Saints passing game. His current ADP is WR32, and that's fairly accurate considering all the factors around him in 2009. He finished last year as the 13th best fantasy receiver, but several Saints receivers missed time due to injury. Unless that happens again, he may be hard pressed to make it into the top 20.
DET - QB Daunte Culpepper should get the starting nod
Source: Ed Thompson - Scout.com
Ed Thompson, from Scout.com, reports that after Saturday's narrow 18-17 win over the Indianapolis Colts, the Detroit Lions should award the starter's job to Daunte Culpepper. The veteran got the start against the Colts on Sunday and completed 7 of 12 throws for 67 yards and a touchdown during first-half action. Meanwhile, rookie Matthew Stafford posted nice numbers as well, completing 13 of 19 for 160 yards. But he threw an interception and no touchdown passes during his stint.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Culpepper has been "getting his roll on" and looking like the player he used to be when he played for the Vikings. He may get the starting nod to begin the season, but we feel that sometime around the Lions' week 7 bye week we'll see rookie Matthew Stafford take over.
NE - Patriots interested in QB A.J. Feeley?
Source: Jason LaConfora - NFL Network
Jason LaConfora, from NFL Network, reports New England is one of several teams looking at veteran options at the quarterback position. The Patriots are among the many teams to express an interest in Philadelphia's A.J. Feeley. Some execs believe New England is where Feeley will end up, but, according to a source, the Eagles do not plan on parting with Feeley until they know how long Michael Vick will have to sit out.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
LaConfora also reports the Rams might be interested in the veteran signal caller. New England has been looking for an upgrade to their backup quarterback position, and that's why they signed Andrew Walter (Raiders) a couple of weeks ago.
DEN - RB Knowshon Moreno sighting
Source: Mike Klis - Denver Post
The Denver Post is reporting that under the watchful eye of Broncos' longtime trainer Steve "Greek" Antonopulos, Broncos rookie running back Knowshon Moreno was testing his injured right knee prior to the preseason game Sunday night against the Bears at Invesco Field at Mile High.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Moreno was Josh McDaniels first ever draft pick, selected this year at 12th overall, but he's been out with a strained MCL since the Broncos preseason opener on August 14th. He's not expected to play the rest of the preseason, but the Broncos are hopeful that he'll be ready to go for their week 1 opener against the Bengals.
PHI - WR Jeremy Maclin working with starters Sunday
Source: Kevin Noonan - CBSSports.com
CBSSports.com reports Philadelphia Eagles WR Jeremy Maclin is working with the starters in practice Sunday, Aug. 30, because WR Kevin Curtis (knee) is sitting out with a sore knee.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Jeremy Maclin is somewhat raw as a receiver, although he is extremely dangerous with the football in his hands. He may be forced into playing time before he is ready if Kevin Curtis continues to struggle with his knee injury.
PIT - RB Willie Parker not dressed Saturday
Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports Pittsburgh Steelers RB Willie Parker (hamstring) is not playing in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 29, because of a hamstring ache.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The injury isn't serious, but we certainly wish Parker wouldn't have had two different injuries to deal with this preseason. The nice thing is that his ADP more than reflects his injury risk - it's rare to get the starting RB for the returning Super Bowl champ in the sixth round.
BAL - TE Todd Heap answers the call
Source: BaltimoreRavens.com
BaltimoreRavens.com reports Todd Heap's 9-yard touchdown reception from Joe Flacco was met with a collective groan from the Carolina Panther faithful as the Ravens took a 7-3 lead in the second quarter of Saturday's game. "Joe and I saw the same thing. The defense was playing man-to-man and the corners were off to the sides," said Heap about quarterback Joe Flacco's perfectly-placed ball in the back corner of the end zone. "It's fun to start developing that chemistry early. Joe made a great throw and all I had to do was pluck it out of the air." Head coach John Harbaugh is hoping this is a trend that will continue well into the season. "[Heap] gives you another playmaker," said Harbaugh. "Joe has proven that he can spread around the ball. If Todd Heap emerges like it looks like he's emerging, that's what we've been hoping."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Ravens receiving corps is one of the least impressive in the league, so they may turn to Todd Heap more than ever before. He needs to stay healthy, and could pay off as a late-round TE with top 10 potential for fantasy owners.
NYG - RB Danny Ware day-to-day with sore ribs
Source: Michael Eisen - Giants.com
Michael Eisen, of Giants.com, reports New York Giants RB Danny Ware (ribs) has sore ribs and is "day-to-day," according to head coach Tom Coughlin. Ware will undergo tests to determine the full extent of the injury.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Rib injuries can be played through, but are very painful. Danny Ware is a late round pick that could have more value than people realize. Ahmad Bradshaw is not built to have a Derrick Ward-like workload, and the Giants would like to use Danny Ware as a complementary back to both Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs.
GB - WR Greg Jennings will not play Thursday
Source: Rob Demovsky - the Green bay Press-Gazette
Rob Demovsky, of the Green bay Press-Gazette, reports Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said WR Greg Jennings (concussion) will not play in the team's preseason game Thursday, Sept. 3, but he should be ready for Week 1.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
In week four of the preseason a lot of regular season starters don't play at all, or play very little. This injury shouldn't change your opinion on Greg Jennings, he should still be a top 10 fantasy wide receiver.
MIN - QB Brett Favre expected to play first half Monday
Source: Associated Press
The Associated Press reports Minnesota Vikings QB Brett Favre is expected to play the entire first half of the team's preseason game Monday, Aug. 31.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Great news for ESPN and their viewership for Monday Night Football. We expect Favre to look his age because of how late he reported to Vikings camp.
CIN - RB Bernard Scott seems locked as No. 2 RB
Source: Cbssports.com
CBSSports.com reports Cincinnati Bengals RB Bernard Scott appears locked as the No. 2 running back. However, head coach Marvin Lewis said Scott is far from a finished product. Lewis said, "Thank goodness you have these games to let him play and kind of work through those things. He hasn't showed he's going to shy away from anything. I like that."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Scott is a more dynamic back than Cedric Benson, and we expect him to play a Leon Washington-esque role for the Bengals. He's worth a late round flyer in PPR leagues.
CIN - QB Carson Palmer works on rehab field Sunday
Source: Cbssports.com
Updating a previous item, CBSSports.com reports Cincinnati Bengals QB Carson Palmer (ankle) worked on the rehab field during practice Sunday, Aug. 30. Palmer looked fine while jobbing, and he made a few throws with his feet planted on the ground.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We wouldn't worry about Palmer because of this ankle issue. The risk from Cincinnati's weak offensive line and Palmer's increased chances of injury is already factored into Palmer's modest ADP.
NYG - WR Hakeem Nicks could see more playing time
Source: Ralph Vacchiano - the New York Daily News
Ralph Vacchiano, of the New York Daily News, reports New York Giants WR Hakeem Nicks could be in line for more playing time after his performance Saturday, Aug. 29, according to head coach Tom Coughlin. Nicks caught six passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns during the preseason game.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
It was a preseason game, and it was against the Jets' third-string defense, but Hakeem Nicks was completely dominant. Nicks is currently listed as fourth on the depth chart, but could quickly rise up the charts if he continues to play like this. In a year or two, Nicks could develop into one of the best receivers in the league, the real question is - will QB Eli Manning hold back his potential?
STL - HC Spagnuolo not ruling WR Donnie Avery out for Thursday
Source: Cameron Hollway - CBSSports.com
CBSSports.com reports St. Louis Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo would not rule out the possibility of WR Donnie Avery (foot) getting limited time in the team's final preseason game Thursday, Sept. 3.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Avery has made a phenomenal recovery, as many expected him to miss the entire preseason when he first sustained the injury. He's the Rams best receiving option, so they are likely to be very careful with him until he's fully healthy.
NYG - WR Sinorice Moss barely plays Saturday
Source: Paul Schwartz and Mark Cannizzaro - the New York Post
Paul Schwartz and Mark Cannizzaro, of the New York Post, reports New York Giants WR Sinorice Moss barely played in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 29. Moss did not make an appearance in the game until the third quarter when he returned a kickoff. Moss did not know why he was held out of the game. "You have to ask the coach. I have no explanation. I really don't know what to say about what happened. When I did step on the field, I went out and did my best."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Moss was clearly frustrated about his lack of playing time after the game, and many think this could be the end of the line for Moss with the Giants. Earlier this year, Moss was the star of minicamp until a hamstring injury forced him to fall behind in training camp.
SEA - WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh finds end zone
Source: Associated Press
Seattle Seahawks WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh had five catches for 60 yards and one touchdown in the team's preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs Saturday, Aug. 29.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Houshmandzadeh is clearly on the same page as Matt Hasselbeck, especially in the red zone. As long as the offensive line can keep Hasselbeck healthy, Housh should be in for a very good year, certainly worthy of a pick as your #2 WR.
BAL - QB Joe Flacco has nice showing Saturday
Source: Cbssports.com
Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco had a nice outing Saturday, Aug. 29, against the Carolina Panthers. He hit 23-of-28 passes for 247 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
This performance showed Flacco's progress, but it also showed how vulnerable the Panthers defense is. By most accounts, their performance caused a lot of concern about how they'll perform in the regular season.
BAL - RB Ray Rice a double threat
Source: Cbssports.com
Baltimore Ravens RB Ray Rice was a double threat during the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 29, against the Carolina Panthers. He had 10 carries for 32 yards, but also had eight receptions for 67 yards.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Cam Cameron loves to the get the ball to his running backs in space, and Ray Rice is by far the best receiving RB on the roster. He is worth a fifth-round pick in PPR leagues.
CAR - RB Jonathan Stewart misses another preseason game
Source: Cbssports.com
Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (Achilles') did not play in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 29, against the Baltimore Ravens.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Stewart's ADP has been steadily dropping as the reality of taking a player who has barely practiced is setting in. Stewart barely worked with the team in training camp last year and still had a great year, but we wouldn't take him before the eighth round because of his achilles troubles and long injury history at Oregon.
NYG - QB Eli Manning, receivers struggle Saturday
Source: NFL.com
NFL.com reports New York Giants QB Eli Manning struggled with the long ball against the New York Jets Saturday, Aug. 29. He overthrew TE Kevin Boss in the end zone during the first quarter, WR Domenik Hixon in the second and a wide open WR Mario Manningham in the third. When Manning did make good throws, his receivers didn't give him any help by dropping catchable passes. In just over two quarters of action, Manning hit 9-of-21 passes for 91 yards, one touchdown and an interception.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Manning is still only an uninspiring backup fantasy QB option, especially with his receivers failing to make plays. Steve Smith dropped a long pass that could have made Manning's night. At least Hakeem Nicks showed a lot of potential playing late with David Carr.
PIT - RB Stefan Logan gives Steelers nice return on their investment
Source: Associated Press
The Associated Press reports Stefan Logan seems likely to begin the season as the Steelers' returner; he has been competing with rookie Joe Burnett, who had two fumbles in his first two games. If he does, Logan is looking to run, not to play it safe. "I feel pretty good out there," Logan said. "As long as you have confidence, Coach will gain confidence in you."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Logan rushed for almost 6,000 yards at South Dakota, but was not drafted because of his small stature. Despite his size, the Steelers took notice of Logan after he ran for almost 900 yards and hauled in 52 passes for 477 yards in the CFL last season. Pittsburgh gave him a two-year contract, and so far have been very happy with his performance in the preseason.
