KC - WR Dwayne Bowe appears to be out of doghouse
Source: Bob Gretz - CBSSports.com
CBSSports.com reports Kansas City Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe appears to be completely out of head coach Todd Haley's doghouse. Haley was unhappy with Bowe's focus and effort early in the preseason and demoted him, but Bowe has worked his way back and took all of his snaps during the team's afternoon practice Wednesday, Aug. 26.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
D-Bowe or D-Show is now just plain old Dwayne Bowe. The talented receiver just needed a reality check, and new coach Todd Haley was happy to give it to him. Because the Chiefs defense is suspect, it means the offense may be in catch up mode early on. This means Dwayne Bowe could lead the NFL in targets this season as the team has to play pass-happy to stay in games.
NYJ - Team names QB Mark Sanchez starter
Source: Jay Glazer - FoxSports.com
Jay Glazer, of FoxSports.com, reports that Jets head coach Rex Ryan has informed Mark Sanchez that he will be the starting QB for the New York Jets
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Sanchez had about as a rough a start as a QB can have against the Raven, but he kept swinging and didn't get overwhelmed or shell up when his first pass was intercepted by Haloti Ngata and returned for a TD, and his second pass was dropped by Ray Lewis, who also had a clear path to the end zone. We were encouraged by Sanchez's mental toughness and perseverance, but there will be still be plenty of growing pains for Sanchez this year.
SF - RB Frank Gore still focal point of offense
Source: Matt Maiocco - the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat
Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat, reports that 49ers offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye insists that RB Frank Gore is the focal point of the offense. "This deal is 21," said Raye, referring to Gore's number. "This ballclub is going to be run by No.21. It was never going to be that the lead dog in this race was going to be the quarterback. The bell cow in this operation will be No.21."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
That should be music to fantasy owners ears. The league is moving away from workhorse do-everything lead backs, but that's exactly what Gore is going to be in San Francisco. He's a worthy mid-first round pick, and a steal if he falls to the second.
MIN - QB Brett Favre does not appear to have much support in locker room
Source: Adam Schefter - ESPN
Adam Schefter, of ESPN, reports Minnesota Vikings QB Brett Favre appears to have little support from teammates at this point, according to a league source. Favre has created a division within the locker room. Some players believe QB Tarvaris Jackson gives the team the best chance to win while others believe QB Sage Rosenfels gives them the best chance to win, according to sources.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
There's nothing that will de-rail a season faster than a divided lockerroom. Some feel that Brad Childress put honesty and integrity on the back burner in order to sign the old gunslinger Brett Favre. If the Vikings start the season out hot, we won't hear much about this. However, if Favre starts playing like he did at the end of last year, we could hear the rumblings from the lockerroom get louder than ever.
ARI - WR Anquan Boldin injured Tuesday, misses practice Wednesday
Source: Kent Somers - The Arizona Republic
Kent Somers, of The Arizona Republic, reports Arizona Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin (hamstring) suffered a strained right hamstring Tuesday, Aug. 25, and did not participate in practice Wednesday, Aug. 26. Head coach Ken Whisenhunt would not rule out Boldin for the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 28, but said the team wants to be cautious with him.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The team will be very cautious with their star wide receiver, and it would be fairly surprising if they trotted him out for Friday's game. However, Anquan Boldin wanted to play last year only one week after basically breaking his face, so you know the guy is as tough as they come. The Cardinals don't want this injury to linger, and they want Boldin at full strength for the start of the regular season.
DEN - Team would listen to trade offers for WR Brandon Marshall
Source: Jeff Legwold - the Denver Post
Jeff Legwold, from the Denver Post, is reporting the Broncos would listen for trade offers for Marshall if they included first- and fourth-round draft picks. But the buzz among the league executives contacted this week was that they would want to see if Marshall is healthy after undergoing hip surgery in the offseason. And a few of those personnel executives said they would have to explain to the team ownership that Marshall, despite his acquittal on misdemeanor battery charges in Atlanta earlier this month, is still considered one more brush with the law away from a substantial suspension by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The team is certainly willing to listen to trade offers, but with Marshall's injury/legal history they might not get an offer that is to their liking. In the end, both sides (Broncos and McDaniels) may discover that the best solution is for them to stay together for one more year. Then Marshall could prove that he is healthy and can stay out of trouble. At the same time, the Broncos would get the benefit of having one of the most talented WRs still producing for them.
CIN - QB Carson Palmer out for Thursday, may sit rest of preseason
Source: James Walker - ESPN.com
James Walker, of ESPN.com, reports Cincinnati Bengals QB Carson Palmer (ankle) will not play in the team's preseason game Thursday, Aug. 27, and could be held out of the rest of the preseason as a precaution, according to a source. His availability for the final preseason game will depend on how his ankle responds before the game. The Bengals expect Palmer will be ready for Week 1.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
This injury will keep Carson Palmer as a value pick in most every fantasy league. If healthy, Carson Palmer could once again be a top 10 fantasy QB, but you can draft him after the first 10 QBs have gone off the board. The offensive line is a big question mark for the Bengals, so protecting Palmer may be troublesome in 2009.
BUF - RB Fred Jackson vows to play in Week 1
Source: Chris Brown - BuffaloBills.com
Chris Brown, of BuffaloBills.com, reports Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (wrist, thumb) had X-rays on his injured wrist and thumb, which came back negative. He is confident he will be ready for Week 1 against the New England Patriots. Jackson said he plans to try practicing Thursday, Aug. 27, and he may be able to play in the team's next preseason game versus the Pittsburgh Steelers.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Jackson will be the main back for the Bills while Marshawn Lynch is suspended the first three games of the season. If his hand/wrist is still sore at the beginning of the season, the team may supplement a few carries with Xavier Omon or Dominic Rhodes. When Lynch returns from suspension expect Jackson's touches and fantasy value to drop. The team wants to use Lynch as their bellcow RB, while Jackson may split out wide or catch a few passes out of the backfield.
NYJ - WR David Clowney front-runner for #2 WR job
Source: M.A. Mehta - the Newark Star-Ledger
M.A. Mehta, of the Newark Star-Ledger, reports that WR David Clowney worked with the first-team offense on Wednesday, August 26, and that he appears to be the front-runner for the #2 WR job.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Chansi Stuckey will still have a role in the slot, even if Clowney starts, and Dustin Keller's clear role as the #2 target in the passing offense will keep either one from having significant fantasy value no matter who comes out on top.
ATL - New and improved Matt QB Matt Ryan
Source: D. Orlando Ledbetter - the Atlanta Journal-Constitution
D. Orlando Ledbetter, of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports that Falcons QB Matt Ryan is stronger, more athletic, and more comfortable entering his second season. Atlanta WR Roddy White said, "He did a great job this offseason in the weight room. He can throw the ball farther. He can cut it loose. He's got a little more zip on his ball and everything."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Ryan is rising on draft boards, but you can still land him in the QB8-12 range, as one of the last starters off the board. We still think his upside is capped by the presence of Michael Turner as a force in the red zone, but he's a fine choice as a starter as long as you take one of the first backups off the board like Matt Hasselbeck or David Garrard.
ARI - QB Kurt Warner feeling better
Source: Bob McManaman and Kent Somers - the Arizona Republic
Bob McManaman and Kent Somers, of the Arizona Republic, report that QB Kurt Warner's hip is feeling better. "I feel a lot better," he said. "I feel probably twice as good as I felt at any point since I injured my hip. It's exciting for me that I'm seeing strides being made. I'm feeling more comfortable and I don't have to worry about trying to manage the pain. I'm definitely feeling better than I have in a long time."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Warner is starting to fall because of the perceived injury risk that goes with his age, history, and offseason surgery, so be ready to scoop him up in the sixth round if he falls that far. His dropping ADP is another good reason to wait on QB in leagues that only give four points per passing TD.
SEA - HC Mora said RB Julius Jones will be workhorse back
Source: Mike Sando - ESPN.com
Mike Sando, of ESPN.com, reports Seattle Seahawks head coach Jim Mora said RB Julius Jones will be the team's workhorse running back this season.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
This conflicts with Greg Knapp's comments earlier this offseason about wanting to use a rotation at the position. Edge might not be the sure thing to vulture goal line touches that TJ Duckett was, but we think he still has something left in the tank, and he's a bigger threat to Jones overall number of touches than Duckett.
NO - RB Reggie Bush misses practice, questionable for Saturday
Source: Mike Triplett - the New Orleans Times-Picayune
Mike Triplett, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports New Orleans Saints RB Reggie Bush (calf) did not participate in team drills during practice Wednesday, Aug. 26. He is considered questionable for the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 29.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Earlier reports have stated that Bush will play sparingly in the first half of the Saints preseason game against the Raiders.
NO - RB Pierre Thomas misses practice Wednesday, will not play Saturday
Source: Mike Triplett - the New Orleans Times-Picayune
Mike Triplett, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports New Orleans Saints RB Pierre Thomas (knee) did not participate in team drills during practice Wednesday, Aug. 26. He will not play in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 29.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Thomas sustained his injury in last week's preseason game against the Texans, and wanted to be back to practice in only a couple of days. There have been problems with pain in the knee, and that's why Thomas continues to sit out.
ARI - WR Steve Breaston not expected to play Friday
Source: Kent Somers - The Arizona Republic
Kent Somers, of The Arizona Republic, reports Arizona Cardinals WR Steve Breaston (knee) is not expected to play in the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 28.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Breaston's knee injury has opened the door for lunch-pail receiver Jerehme Urban, who will now be a starter opposite Larry Fitzgerald for Friday's preseason game because of the injury to Anquan Boldin. Urban is a hard worker, and a consistent receiver who could play his way into more playing time, even when Breaston and Boldin come back from injury.
CAR - RB Mike Goodson works with first team Wednesday
Source: Steve Reed - CarolinaGrowl.com
Steve Reed, of CarolinaGrowl.com, reports Carolina Panthers RB Mike Goodson worked with the first-team offense during practice Wednesday, Aug. 26, because RB DeAngelo Williams (knee) and RB Jonathan Stewart (Achilles') did not participate.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
This is why the Panthers selected the talented rookie out of Texas A&M. Goodson has shown his burst, speed, quickness, and vision during the preseason and has had some dazzling runs. However, he needs to have better ball security or his time on the field will be limited. Goodson also needs to show that he can be consistent in pass protection.
NO - RB Mike Bell having strong camp
Source: Associated Press
The Associated Press reports New Orleans Saints FB Mike Bell has dropped his weight to 219 pounds and is having a strong training camp for the team. 'He runs hard,' head coach Sean Payton said. 'He's a physical player. I think he's had a real good offseason and camp. I'm encouraged. He's in good shape and his weight is where we want it to be.' Bell figures to be part of a three-back tandem along with RBs Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush when the Saints offense is in need of a more basic, punishing, clock-eating approach.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Give it up for Mike Bell! Fantasy owners have given up on Bell since his rookie season in Denver where he exploded onto the scene as an undrafted free agent. Picked up by the Saints last year, Bell now has an important role on the team as the third-string running back. The team was looking for someone to be the primary backup to Pierre Thomas, and it Bell has beaten out the competition with a strong camp/preseason. Because of his nose for the endzone, Bell may get some goalline work even if Thomas is not banged up.
ARI - QB Matt Leinart impresses Whisenhunt
Source: Bob McManaman and Kent Somers - the Arizona Republic
Bob McManaman and Kent Somers, of the Arizona Republic, report that QB Matt Leinart has impressed head coach Ken Whisenhunt during training camp and the preseason. Whisenhunt said, "It would be easy for me to sit up here and say one day it will pay off for him, but I really believe that when Matt gets his opportunity to play - and it's coming - he's going to do very well. And I've seen a number of signs in the first two preseason games that have kind of solidified that."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We're still not quite buying it, since Leinart has had to be in the league three years before he learned the lesson of dedication to the game. He might be put on the spot if the aged Kurt Warner goes down, and we're not convinced that Leinart will do "very well" if that happens.
TB - QB job QB Byron Leftwich's to lose?
Source: Rick Stroud - the St. Petersburg Times
Rick Stroud, of the St. Petersburg Times, reports that unless QB Byron Leftwich has a poor outing and Luke McCown has a great one in week three of the preseason, McCown and Josh Johnson will be on the trade block, because the team prefers Josh Freeman as the #2.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Leftwich is better suited for Jeff Jagodzinski's offense, and he's the more polished QB at this point. We would be surprised if he's not the week 1 starter for the Bucs.
PHI - RB Brian Westbrook expected to play Thursday
Source: Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb - the Philadelphia Inquirer
Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb, of the Philadelphia Inquirer, report Philadelphia Eagles RB Brian Westbrook (ankle) is expected to play in the team's preseason game Thursday, Aug. 27. It is not known how long Westbrook will play in the game.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Eagles may only give Westbrook a few reps in live game action as they try and bring him back slowly from this latest injury. Fantasy owners that are able to get Westbrook in the 2nd round need to handcuff LeSean McCoy to him somewhere around the 10th round.
CAR - RB Jonathan Stewart misses practice Wednesday
Source: Steve Reed - CarolinaGrowl.com
Steve Reed, of CarolinaGrowl.com, reports Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (Achilles') did not participate in practice Wednesday, Aug. 26.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Fantasy owners have to certainly be concerned about Stewart's lack of durability. Dating back to his days at Oregon, Stewart has always had trouble staying healthy. The Panthers were concerned about this problem, and that's why they drafted Mike Goodson. Stewart may get fewer touches this year, but the Panthers could continue to use him as the primary goalline back.
BAL - TE L.J. Smith misses practice Wednesday
Source: Edward Lee - The Baltimore Sun
Edward Lee, of The Baltimore Sun, reports Baltimore Ravens TE L.J. Smith (hamstring) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Aug. 26.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
There are certain things you can count on in life - death, taxes, and L.J. Smith getting hurt. Fantasy owners need to look elsewhere for a backup tight end.
PHI - Ravens, Jets eyeing Philly wide receivers
Source: Paul Domowitch - the Philadelphia Daily News
Paul Domowitch, of the Philadelphia Daily News, reports that at least two teams - the Baltimore Ravens and the New York Jets - are keeping a close eye on the Eagles wide receiver situation.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Eagles have at least six NFL quality wide receivers in DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, Kevin Curtis, Reggie Brown, Jason Avant, and Hank Baskett. Any of the last three on that list could get traded in the next few weeks as teams start to prepare their final rosters.
NYJ - Still would consider a trade for a number two WR
Source: M.A. Mehta - the Newark Star-Ledger
M.A. Mehta, from the Newark Star-Ledger, reports New York Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum also left the door open for a possible trade for a No. 2 WR. "I wouldn't rule anything out at this point," Tannenbaum said. "If we can add a player at the receiver position or a couple other positions, we're going to take a long look at that. We like our team... This time of year unexpected opportunities come along. I want to keep our options open."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Jets could be considering a trade for WR Brandon Marshall, who is still upset with his situation in Denver and is looking for a way out. Marshall would be a serious upgrade for their WR corps, and become their top target ahead of current #1 Jerricho Cotchery. The backups behind Cotchery are somewhat talented, but players like Chansi Stuckey, Brad Smith, and David Clowney are still very inexperienced.
Source: Associated Press
The Associated Press reports the Tennessee Titans have released WR Chris C. Davis.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Charged with a DUI on Friday when he didn't travel with the team, the writing was on the wall for Davis' future with the organization. Fisher denied that his arrest had anything to do with the team's decision to release Davis. Instead Fisher cited the hamstring injury that had kept Davis out of the first two preseason games. Davis has been a disappointment so far in his pro career, but when healthy he could latch on with another team like the Rams or the Ravens. He had been having a good offseason camp until his latest hamstring injury.
CLE - WR Brian Robiskie coming on strong
Source: Tony Grossi - the Cleveland Plain Dealer
Tony Grossi, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports Cleveland Browns WR Brian Robiskie has looked more confident on the field than he has at any stage of training camp. Robiskie struggled with dropped passed early on, but has battled past the rookie wall during the latter stages of camp.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Robiskie, the son of Falcons WR coach Terry Robiskie, was one of the most polished receivers in the 2009 NFL draft class. Even with his father's coaching and advice, it has still been a rougher than expected transition to the NFL. He is competing with fellow rookie receiver Mohamed Massoquoi, and one day they could develop into a potent pass-catching duo. Robiskie has a tremendous work ethic, and could continue to rise up the depth chart as the regular season goes along.
NYJ - Team still at odds with RB Leon Washington over contract extension
Source: Rich Cimini - the New York Daily News
Rich Cimini, of the New York Daily News, reports nothing is imminent in regards to the New York Jets signing RB Leon Washington to a long-term contract extension. The team is still trying to sign Washington. However, it is believed both sides have not spoken in about two weeks. The Jets have an offer on the table that includes $10 million in guarantees, sources said. Even though the talks have hit a standstill, it would be a surprise if negotiations don't resume before the start of the season.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Washington looked very good in Monday night's game against the Ravens, as he compiled 176 all-purpose yards and a touchdown against one of the toughest defenses in the game. Rex Ryan wants to expand Washington's role in the offense, and he was featured in nearly half of the offensive plays in the first two quarters of the game against Baltimore. The Jets need to stop dragging their feet and get this deal done. No other back on the Jets roster can do what Washington does, and with rookie Mark Sanchez lining up as the starter the team will rely on their ground game - and Washington - more than ever.
NFL - WR Plaxico Burress hopes to return following prison term
Source: Associated Press
The Associated Press reports free-agent WR Plaxico Burress (Giants) said he plans to return to the NFL after serving a two-year prison sentence on a weapons charge.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
By the time he gets out of jail he will be 34-years old, and his body should feel fresh with two years away from the game. We can't imagine dozens of teams lining up for his services, but he'll be eager to prove himself, and there should be some team willing to take a chance on him.
ARI - Team not concerned over offense
Source: Kent Somers - The Arizona Republic
Kent Somers, of The Arizona Republic, reports the Arizona Cardinals are not concerned over their offensive struggles so far this preseason. The team has just one touchdown in two preseason games and has not scored a touchdown in eight trips in the red zone. 'I couldn't even tell you what we did in preseason last year,' QB Kurt Warner said. 'Were we really good in preseason last year? I have no idea. So, again, preseason is what it is. We've got to improve, no question, but I'm not in full panic mode right now.'
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Coach Whisenhunt believes that part of their trouble scoring is due to a lack of gameplanning in the preseason. Another reason the Cardinals have failed to score in the red zone is four turnovers, including two passes picked off in the endzone in Saturday's game against the Chargers. This is only preseason, so fantasy owners shouldn't be concerned by the lack of points the Cardinals are putting up on the scoreboard.

IND - S Bob Sanders injury update
Source: Mike Chappell - the Indianapolis Star
Mike Chappell, of the Indianapolis Star, reports Indianapolis Colts FS Bob Sanders (knee) met with Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., and the update on his progress from offseason knee surgery is promising, according to head coach Jim Caldwell. 'Dr. Andrews has looked at him and really feels he's on target and coming along,' Caldwell said. 'He's making progress. (Sanders) feels good about where he is, Dr. Andrews feels good about where he is, so that means I should feel good about where he is.' The team, however, remains uncertain whether Sanders will be ready for Week 1.
