SF - X-Rays negative on QB Alex Smith's thumb
Source: Matt Barrows - the Sacramento Bee
Matt Barrows, from the Sacramento Bee, reports x-rays taken immediately after Saturday's game on Alex Smith's right thumb were negative, according to a team source. Smith hurt the thumb while making a tackle after an interception. He threw one pass -- an incompletion -- on the following drive but was replaced by Shaun Hill midway through the drive. The 49ers will wait to see how Smith's thumb responds before determining his workload this week. The team's next game is Aug. 29 in Dallas.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Shaun Hill has all but wrapped up this QB competition this preseason. Smith's injury may not be serious, but it seriously damages his chances to make a late run at the starting spot.
JAX - WR Troy Williamson standing out in preseason games
Source: Associated Press
The Associated Press reports Jacksonville Jaguars WR Troy Williamson is motivated to snag a starting gig with the Jaguars this year. He hauled in a 74-yard touchdown pass on the first play for the Jaguars Saturday, Aug. 22, against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and finished the game with three catches, one score and 147 yards receiving. Last week he had a 74-yard performance against the Miami Dolphins.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Williamson's talent has never been a question. Injuries to Mike Walker and Mike Thomas, and the dropsies from Jarett Dillard have opened a great opportunity for Williamson, and as of right now, he looks poised to seize it. We wouldn't draft him, even in deep leagues, but we would definitely pick him up in deep dynasty leagues, just in case the former #7 overall pick finally has it figured out.
DET - QB Daunte Culpepper appears to be favorite to start season
Source: John Clayton - ESPN
ESPN's John Clayton reports it appears Detroit Lions QB Daunte Culpepper will enter the regular season as the team's starting quarterback.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Matthew Stafford looked a bit overwhelmed in his first start against Cleveland, who aren't exactly the NFL's toughest defense. He'll get his shot to start at some point this year, but the Lions would be smart to take it slow with the #1 overall pick.
CLE - QB Brady Quinn appears to be favorite to start season
Source: John Clayton - ESPN
ESPN's John Clayton reports the Cleveland Browns quarterback battle between Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson remains an open competition, but Quinn appears to still have the upper hand in the competition.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Quinn is going to be more conservative and safer with the football, but Anderson is much better at making big plays downfield. It will be interesting to see which way the Browns go, but it probably won't make much a difference to the final outcome of their season. Quinn didn't see much action in Saturday's game so we didn't see a lot there that will tell us much.
HOU - QB Matt Schaub has another good game
Source: John McClain - Houston Chronicle
Houston Texans QB Matt Schaub had another solid preseason game Saturday, Aug. 22, against the New Orleans Saints. He hit 11-of-16 passes for 97 yards and a touchdown.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Schaub looks like a comfortable veteran in command of his offense. We still like him the best of the QBs you can take after the top eight are off the board, just make sure to take another QB in the next 2-3 rounds because Schaub has trouble staying healthy enough to play.
DEN - QB Kyle Orton improves in second showing
Source: Associated Press
The Associated Press reports Denver Broncos fans were relieved to see QB Kyle Orton's second preseason start wasn't a train wreck like his first one. Orton finished the game going 18-of-26 for 182 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He had completed 16-of-19 passes with a touchdown before being picked off. Orton only went deep once all night, but said he was playing with an awful lot of confidence.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Orton did look like a different quarterback when compared to his first preseason outing. In the Broncos game against the 49ers he was driving the team efficiently on the first drive, but after getting picked off in the endzone he seemed to lose his confidence. Against the Seahawks, Orton did a good job of spreading the ball around and getting the ball into the hands of his playmakers. Broncos fans need to have patience with Orton. Because of all the complexities of this offense, it's going to take much more than just a few weeks of training camp to run it effectively.
CHI - QB Jay Cutler rebounds in second preseason game
Source: Joe LaPointe - New York Times
Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler had a better second showing during the preseason Saturday, Aug. 22, as he went 8-of-13 for 121 yards with a touchdown pass.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Just like Kyle Orton, Jay Cutler looked much more comfortable in the offense in his second preseason game. Next week he travels back to Denver to play the Broncos at Invesco Field, and he'll be out to prove that letting him go was the biggest mistake the Broncos have made in recent history. Well, that and drafting Maurice Clarett.
SF - QB Shaun Hill inching toward starting gig?
Source: Adam Schefter - ESPN
Adam Schefter, of ESPN, reports it appears San Francisco 49ers QB Shaun Hill will be named the team's starting quarterback after Alex D. Smith completed just a third of his nine passing attempts and threw an interception Saturday, Aug. 22. Hill was 3-for-7 for 20 yards. Head coach Mike Singletary has previously said he would wait until after the team's third preseason game before choosing a starter.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Singletary has seen the writing on the wall, and even though some inside the franchise may be disappointed, Alex Smith simply isn't the best quarterback on the roster. Shaun Hill throws one of the ugliest passes of any starting QB in the NFL, but he is a leader and a winner. Those are traits that Alex Smith hasn't shown consistently yet in his pro career. The former #1 overall pick still has plenty of upside and potential, but that's not what wins games in the NFL. The 49ers players seem to respond to Hill on the field, he has good command of the huddle, and those are two of the main reasons why he should be named the starting quarterback.
SF - RB Frank Gore still to get majority of carries this season
Source: Mike Sando - ESPN.com
Mike Sando, of ESPN.com, reports San Francisco 49ers RB Frank Gore will still get a majority of the team's carries this season even though RB Glen Coffee has been impressive during preseason games.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Gore is the biggest piece to the offensive puzzle in San Francisco, and will likely lead the team in receptions out of the backfield as well. If healthy, Gore could have nearly 1,200 yards rushing with 45+ receptions and around 10 total touchdowns.
TB - WR Michael Clayton could miss some practice time
Source: Jim Flynn - PewterReport.com
Jim Flynn, of PewterReport.com, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Michael Clayton (hamstring) left the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 22, but head coach Raheem Morris said he would be fine. Clayton could miss some practice time this week.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Clayton has been a disappointment since his solid rookie performance back in 2004. The Bucs will use him as the third or fourth option in the passing game behind WR Antonio Bryant, TE Kellen Winslow, and perhaps RB Derrick Ward. Fantasy owners should look elsewhere for help with their WR corps.
PIT - RB Willie Parker gets goalline TD with speed to the edge
Source: Ed Bouchette - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that after Willie Parker missed the opener last week with back spasms, he was able to get in the game and score on a 3-yard sweep in the first quarter. "It felt great," said Parker, who finished with 13 yards on four carries. "I mean, the first time back on the field and the offense looked great. I followed Carey Davis, and it got me into the end zone." Parker has made it no secret he wants to remain in the game at the goal line. "I want to keep getting into the end zone, I want to make that a habit," he said. "I want to keep doing it, keep doing it and keep doing it, so the coaches don't have any other goal-line set and I'll be the goalline guy."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Parker has not gotten any reps when the Steelers have worked on goalline drills in practice, but he certainly has the ability to be a short yardage runner. Back in 2006, Parker scored 13 rushing touchdowns and all but one were from five yards or closer. The Steelers have plenty of options when they get near the goalline, and if Parker keeps performing he could get more of an opportunity than most think.
SD - WR Legedu Naanee starts, and shines
Source: Kevin Acee - the San Diego Union Tribune
Kevin Acee, from the San Diego Union Tribune, reports Legedu Naanee started in place of the injured Vincent Jackson and showed why so many are so excited about his big-play potential in this offense. "He's going to be a big player for us," quarterback Philip Rivers said.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Naanee came out hot, and caught a 49-yard pass from Philip Rivers on their first offensive play. Naanee gained 22 yards on an end-around in the Chargers' second offensive drive, showing some good quickness and agility. So far in 2 preseason games Naanee has caught 2 touchdowns, and is showing that he has much more potential than most backup receivers. If the Chargers experience injuries to their WR corps in the regular season, they won't hardly miss a beat if players like Naanee continue to improve.
TB - QB competition could be extended
Source: Jim Flynn - PewterReport.com
Jim Flynn, of PewterReport.com, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris said Sunday, Aug. 23, he believes the team's quarterback competition has been so tight that he and the team are giving serious consideration to extending the battle through Thursday, Aug. 27.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Stay tuned as this one could drag out it seems.
DEN - HC McDaniel's 'Belichick Program' says if you're not playing, you don't travel
Source: Michael Lombardi - the National Football Post
Michael Lombardi, of the National Football Post, reports that the Bill Belichick program, which is what Josh McDaniels is running, dictates that if you're not playing, you don't travel with the team. Lombardi says this is the reason he is not reading too much into Brandon Marshall's absence this weekend.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We hope Lombardi's take is right, because we can't quite figure what McDaniels or Marshall's angle is here, and we're afraid of mutually assured destruction - the Broncos don't get the benefit of Marshall's skills, and Marshall doesn't get to play elsewhere this year.
WAS - Lombardi: QB Todd Collins should be starter at QB
Source: Michael Lombardi - the National Football Post
Michael Lombardi, of the National Football Post, reports that he thinks that Todd Collins gives the Redskins the best chance to win right now, and he, not Jason Campbell "needs to be made the starter".
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Lombardi has spent a lot of time around the league, and while he is just a commentator at this point, if he's thinking this, then others are too. With the vote of no confidence in Campbell put in by the organization in the offseason, it makes sense that Campbell could be on a short leash. We wouldn't trust him as your backup fantasy QB unless your starter is one of the elite three (Brady/Brees/Manning).
NO - RB Reggie Bush injury considered mild; should return soon
Source: Associated Press
The Associated Press reports New Orleans Saints RB Reggie Bush (calf) did not play Saturday, Aug. 22, due to a strained calf. Head coach Sean Payton said Bush should be able to practice this week, and called Bush's injury 'fairly mild.'
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Bush has been seen limping a lot during camp, but his explosive PPR scoring potential makes him worth the risk in the fourth round of leagues that score receptions.
MIN - Knowing the plays and knowing the players are two different things for QB Brett Favre
Source: Associated Press
The Associated Press reports Minnesota Vikings QB Brett Favre knows the team's offensive scheme and terminology well, but chemistry and rhythm with his wide receivers is going to take some time. The receivers have tendencies and preferences, strengths and weakness, which Favre has to pick up. He said he did not miss a beat calling the plays in the huddle, but he doesn't know everything the receivers have been taught. 'I think that will be an adjustment all year. It really will be,' Favre said. 'We've just got to get reps. There are plays we know, but do you break in? Do you break out? It's plays that I've run in the past, but every guy runs the play different.'
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Just another risk to letting Favre take over the offense unquestioned even though he missed most of training camp.
DEN - WR Brandon Marshall expected to practice
Source: Associated Press - ESPN
The Associated Press reports Denver Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels said he absolutely expects WR Brandon Marshall (hip, hamstring) to take part in practice with the team when they resume workouts Tuesday, Aug. 25. Marshall did not travel with the team for their last preseason game, and he has expressed his desire to be traded due to his unhappiness with the Broncos.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Brandon Marshall has been somewhat of a malcontent since coming back from injury, but the Broncos aren't going to give him the red carpet treatment in practice. He's been running with the scout team, doing special teams work, and has only played with the first-team when the Broncos go to four wide receiver sets. The time to heal this relationship is now, and if Marshall can stay healthy and learn the offense it will do just that. This could be his last season in Denver, he still has a possibility to be traded, and fantasy owners are taking a risk when adding Brandon Marshall to their roster. If you can get Marshall as a value pick, then go for it - but proceed with caution when considering him for your team.
JAX - QB David Garrard terrific Saturday
Source: NFL.com
Jacksonville Jaguars QB David Garrard went 10-for-16 for 216 yards and one touchdown in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 22.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Garrard performed well going against his former teammate, Byron Leftwich, who is trying to win the starting job in Tampa. If the Jags revamped offensive line can protect Garrard better in 2009, then we could see more consistent performances from the quarterback this year.
TB - QB Byron Leftwich has decent performance Saturday
Source:
Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Byron Leftwich, who is competing with QB Luke McCown for the starting quarterback job, went 6-for-12 for 63 yards in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 22.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Leftwich was motivated when going up against his old team, the Jacksonville Jaguars, and had an efficient game overall. However, his competitor for the starting job in Tampa, Luke McCown, had a great game throwing for two touchdowns on the night. The competition in Tampa was supposedly going to be decided based on this game, and it looks like Luke McCown may now have the upper hand.
NO - WR Robert Meachem lines up as a starter opposite Colston
Source: New Orleans Times-Picayune
The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports the Saints lined up WR Robert Meachem as a starter opposite Marques Colston in their game against the Texans.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Some people may have already written off former first-round pick Robert Meachem after a disappointing rookie season, but we say not so fast. Meachem's ADP is WR71 right now, and he's not even getting drafted in some leagues. Keep his name in the back of your head if Lance Moore or Marques Colston continue to struggle with injury. The Saints' passing game is one of the best in the league, and Meachem could start to live up to his draft status.
NO - Mike RB Mike Bell has played his way onto the final roster
Source: Ken Trahan - NewOrleans.com
NewOrleans.com is reporting RB Mike Bell exposed the gaps in the Texans' defense to the tune of 10 carries for 100 yards and an electrifying 46-yard touchdown run. With the way Bell ran the football, he has the team made and has played himself into the running-back-by-committee approach with Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush. Any talk of Edgerrin James may have disappeared with Bell's performance at Reliant Stadium.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Saints have been trying to find a proper backup to RB Pierre Thomas, and it looks like Mike Bell is just that guy. The former Broncos fullback has outplayed rookies P.J. Hill and Herb Donaldson, in addition to veteran Lynell Hamilton, and has seemingly locked up a final roster spot.
OAK - QB JaMarcus Russell has trouble throwing to receivers
Source: Associated Press
The Associated Press reports Oakland Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell got off to a slow start Saturday, Aug. 22, and missed a wide-open WR Darrius Heyward-Bey on third down. He picked up his game during the team's next drive, and finished 7-for-11 for 76 yards, including a touchdown pass to WR Louis Murphy in the back of the end zone. He completed just one pass to a wide receiver during the game.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Russell is definitely missing new favorite receiver Chaz Schilens, but luckily for him, Schilens should be back by week 3 or 4 at the latest.
ARI - RB Tim Hightower sees most of the work Saturday
Source: Associated Press
The Associated Press reports Arizona Cardinals RB Tim Hightower carried the football nine times for 42 yards in the team's preseason game against the San Diego Chargers Saturday, Aug. 22. His longest carry in the game was a 19-yard run.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Hightower is set to start week 1 because first-round pick Beanie Wells has still barely played with the team so far in his short career.
SEA - QB Matt Hasselbeck on target
Source: Associated Press
The Associated Press reports Seattle Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck was on target during the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 22, against the Denver Broncos. He hit 16-of-23 passes for 171 yards and two scores.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
It was good to see Hasselbeck back out there and looking like his old self. The Seahawks front line needs to protect him, and if he can stay upright all season he is one of the best fantasy backup quarterbacks that you can get. Also, take a look at the Seahawks fantasy playoffs schedule in weeks 14, 15, and 16 - games against Houston, Tampa, and Green Bay means a guy like Hasselbeck could help you win your championship.
PHI - QB Michael Vick likely to make debut this week
Source: Associated Press
The Associated Press reports Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick will make his debut during the team's next preseason game if everything goes well in practice the next few days. Vick has been working the majority of his time at quarterback since joining the team a week ago.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Vick has been playing quarterback in practice, but Andy Reid is a smart guy and will use him as a utility player. We have a feeling that during the regular season Vick could line up all over the field. The Eagles know that teams will have to gameplan for Vick, and throwing out a few looks with Vick at wide receiver or running back would confuse a defense.
CHI - RB Matt Forte does well in first preseason action
Source: Vaughn McClure - Chicago Tribune
Chicago Bears RB Matt Forte saw his first action of the preseason Saturday, Aug. 22, rushing nine times for 58 yards and a touchdown. He also had one reception for nine yards against the New York Giants.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Forte is extremely valuable to the Bears offense, but in 2009 he could see fewer receptions that he had in his rookie season. Jay Cutler is not content (forced?) to checkdown like Kyle Orton, and thus the tailback's total number of catches could go down. The Bears will also try and keep Forte fresh for what they hope is a Super Bowl run by substituting in Kevin Jones from time to time.
SF - RB Glen Coffee's role for season unclear
Source: Mike Sando - ESPN.com
Mike Sando, of ESPN.com, reports San Francisco 49ers RB Glen Coffee has performed well during preseason games but his role for the regular season still has not been defined to this point.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Frank Gore is the engine of the offense, and the 49ers are going to try and keep him healthy by substituting in Glen Coffee from time to time. Coffee has performed well in the preseason, with a hard charging running style, and a never-die-easy attitude. If Gore were to go down with injury, Coffee would be able to handle most of the workload and be an adequate replacement. Gore owners need to handcuff Coffee to him in the later rounds.
CLE - QB Brady Quinn does not see much action Saturday
Source: Tony Grossi - Cleveland Plain Dealer
Cleveland Browns QB Brady Quinn, who is competing with QB Derek Anderson for the starting quarterback job, went 3-for-5 for 29 yards in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 22.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Quinn failed to score in two offensive drives, and continued to dink and dunk his way down the field. Nobody has seized the job yet, so fantasy owners are going to have to go on a wish and a prayer if they select either Quinn or Anderson. Worst-case scenario - the two quarterbacks rotate roles in multiple weeks due to ineffectiveness.
CLE - QB Derek Anderson throws for 130 yards Saturday
Source: Tony Grossi - Cleveland Plain Dealer
Cleveland Browns QB Derek Anderson, who is competing with QB Brady Quinn for the starting quarterback job, went 8-for-13 for 130 yards and one interception in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 22.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Anderson continues to make mistakes when throwing the football, his final pass in a 2-minute drill before halftime was high and off the hands of James Davis. Anderson likes to challenge a defense deep, while Brady Quinn is usually safer with his throws, not throwing much past 15 yards. Neither one of these quarterbacks has taken complete control of this competition.
GB - QB Aaron Rodgers throws two touchdowns Saturday
Source: NFL.com
Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers completed eight of his nine passes for 98 yards and two touchdowns in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 22.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
What an extremely efficient night for the Packers' quarterback. Rodgers was reading the defense well, and hit his top two targets (Donald Driver and Greg Jennings) for touchdowns. The Packers are looking for Aaron Rodgers to improve his game in the red zone, and tonight he showed that he is well on his way.
GB - More preseason dominance from the defense
Source: Associated Press
The Associated Press reports the Packers defense turned in it's second straight dominant defensive performance of the preseason. The Packers are making the transition to a 3-4 alignment under new coordinator Dom Capers after the defense shouldered much of the blame for a disappointing 6-10 record in 2008. The defense had four interceptions in a 17-0 shutout of Cleveland last week. The first-team unit looked even sharper Saturday against a Bills offense trying to show off its no-huddle look without Owens, who is nursing a sprained toe and did not make the trip to Green Bay.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Green Bay defense is chock full of playmakers at nearly every position, and we know that Dom Capers will get the most out of this squad. The transition to a 3-4 will not go without a few bad games, but so far the defense is playing with a lot of swagger and confidence which should carry over to the regular season.
