WAS - RB Ladell Betts has had a strong offseason and training camp, now third-down back
Source: Jason Reid - The Washington Post
Updating previous reports, Jason Reid, of The Washington Post, reports Washington Redskins RB Ladell Betts has taken over as the team's primary third-down back because he forced the issue with the team's coaching staff based off of what he has been able to do on the field. The Redskins are eager to give him more work, and have been impressed with his performance during the offseason as well as training camp.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
If Clinton Portis has nagging injuries build up like he did last year, this could become a full-blown RBBC by the time the fantasy playoffs roll around.
ATL - TE Tony Gonzalez still trying to fit in, blocking more
Source: Chris Mortensen - ESPN.com
Chris Mortensen, of ESPN.com, reports Atlanta Falcons TE Tony Gonzalez said he feels like a rookie because he has to learn new things and is still not quite comfortable with the changes. 'I'll admit I'm still somewhat uncomfortable,' said Gonzalez. 'I'm learning a new offense, I'm making new friends, learning a new freeway system. All the things going into switching teams, I'm going through it right now and it's kind of tough, like being a rookie all over again. You get in a whole new system, I'm blocking more at the point of attack, I have different route-running schemes and I'm working with a new quarterback. I think that helps you grow. When you're uncomfortable like that, or taken out of your element, you either adapt to it or you don't. When you see the talent on this team, you are motivated to adapt.'
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Falcons and Matt Ryan aren't going to lean on Gonzalez in the passing game to quite the same extent the Chiefs have in the past few years. Atlanta has a robust running game, much like the Chiefs did mid-decade, when Gonzalez numbers hovered closer to 70-900-5.
WAS - RB Ladell Betts expected to have a bigger role
Source: Jason Reid - the Washington Post
Jason Reid, from the Washington Post, reports coach Jim Zorn has expanded Ladell Betts's responsibilities, making him the primary running back on third downs. That previously had been Clinton Portis's domain -- as well as every other down for the Redskins' offense -- as long as Portis was physically sound enough to play or not on the sideline during a rare break for him.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Remember this story if you're sitting at the end of the first round and considering Clinton Portis for your fantasy team. The Redskins want to keep Portis healthy, and will expand the role of Ladell Betts in order to do so. Portis could see a decline in production, especially as a receiver. We suggest that if you're sitting at the turn you should look to draft one of the elite wide receivers first.
DEN - TE Tony Scheffler becoming QB Kyle Orton's favorite target
Source: Lindsay H. Jones - Denver Post
The Denver Post is reporting that with Brandon Marshall out of the wide receiver rotation for three practices over the past two days, Tony Scheffler emerged as one of the favorite targets of quarterback Kyle Orton.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
When head coach Josh McDaniels first arrived in Denver some wondered if he would use TE Tony Scheffler enough in his offense. It became clear early in camp that the young coach indeed did have a big role for the talented tight end. Orton and Scheffler have developed a great chemistry in their short time together, and fantasy owners could pick up Scheffler as a TE2 with TE1 upside.
WAS - Less could mean more for RB Clinton Portis
Source: Jason Reid - The Washington Post
Jason Reid, of The Washington Post, reports Washington Redskins RB Clinton Portis should, in theory, be able to remain energized from start to finish this year because he will have less plays with RB Ladell Betts taking over as the team's third-down back. It could be interesting to see how Portis takes the situation moving forward, as he previously would check himself out of games when he needed a rest. Portis, who has never been a stranger to voicing his thoughts, also has the ear of team owner Daniel Snyder and executive vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
This is part of the reason Portis is falling to the second round (or later) in most leagues.
PIT - QB Ben Roethlisberger was to be re-examined Friday
Source: Ed Werder - ESPN.com
Updating a previous report, Ed Werder, of ESPN.com, reports Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (Achilles') was expected to be re-examined Friday, Aug. 21, after injuring his Achilles' tendon during practice Thursday, Aug. 20. The initial medical exam revealed no significant damage, according to a source.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Roethlisberger shouldn't have any lingering effects when the season starts, but we've probably seen him for the last time this preseason.
SF - WR Isaac Bruce may play Saturday
Source: Matt Maiocco - The Santa Rosa Press Democrat
Matt Maiocco, of The Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary said WR Isaac Bruce may play one series in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 22.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
With Michael Crabtree's contract issues, and Brandon Jones broken shoulder, Bruce is looking like a good bet to start in week 1.
SF - QB Alex Smith to start Saturday
Source: Matt Maiocco - The Santa Rosa Press Democrat
Matt Maiocco, of The Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers QB Alex Smith will start in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 22.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
It's now or never for Smith. No matter how he performs, we will get the first real insight into where his game is at in that we've had in about two years.
PIT - RB Willie Parker would like third-down back job back
Source: Ed Bouchette - the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports Pittsburgh Steelers RB Willie Parker said he would like to be used on third down this season. 'That was my main focus in the offseason, just work on my hands and give me some plays in the open field one on one vs. a linebacker or one on one vs. a cornerback. That's what I wanted to do and that's what we're planning to do this season,' Parker said.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Mewelde Moore caught 40 receptions out of the backfield last season for the Steelers, and is one of the more versatile backs in the NFL. Parker may not see time on 3rd downs if Moore is healthy, and it looks like the Steelers don't plan on using him at the goalline either. He scored 13 rushing touchdowns in 2006, with most coming from inside the 5-yard line, but he hasn't lined up in practice when the team has done live goalline drills. Fantasy owners in TD heavy leagues need to look elsewhere for fantasy production.
DEN - QB Kyle Orton firmly entrenched as the starter
Source: Lindsay H. Jones - Denver Post
The Denver Post reports Kyle Orton remains firmly entrenched as the team's starter. Orton took all of the work with the starting offense all week, and consistently played better than backup Chris Simms. Coach Josh McDaniels today made a point to say that Orton did not have an overall bad game against San Francisco, when Orton threw three interceptions, just a few "bad decisions." "(Orton) got better every day, he had a heck of a practice (Wednesday) and continues to get better every day," McDaniels said. "That's just the way Kyle is, and Chris is the same way. Neither one of them is where I want them to be ultimately, and it doesn't happen in two weeks. It's going to happen over time."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Broncos fans may not want to hear this, but if Orton plays well in the rest of the preseason then there will be no QB controversy in Denver. Chris Simms looked much better in the game against the 49ers, but he hasn't really outplayed Orton at practice. Simms throws with a ton of velocity, but struggles when throwing touch passes. Orton throws a very catchable pass, but doesn't have the arm strength to stretch the field and challenge a defense deep.
OAK - WR Louis Murphy to start next preseason game
Source: Jerry McDonald - ANG Newspapers
Jerry McDonald, from ANG Newspapers, reports head coach Tom Cable said the opening wide receivers against the 49ers would be rookies Darrius Heyward-Bey and Louis Murphy.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The injury to Chaz Schilens has opened the door for Murphy, and the Raiders are showing faith in their "other" rookie wide receiver. He has good speed, consistent hands, and concentration when going over the middle. We like Murphy as a talent, but he needs to get a cleaner release off the line of scrimmage and become a better route runner. When Schilens comes back from injury he'll go back to #3 on the depth chart, and could be more successful this year working out of the slot.
OAK - RB Michael Bush will start third preseason game
Source: Eric Gilmore - CBSSportsline
CBSSports.com reports Oakland Raiders head coach Tom Cable said RB Michael Bush will start the team's third preseason game Saturday, Aug. 22.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
If this isn't an indication that Bush will play a big role in the Raiders backfield this year, we don't know what is. He's a steal in the double digit rounds.
OAK - HC Cable allegedly choked Assistant Coach Hanson
Source: Brad Biggs - The National Football Post
Updating an ongoing story, Brad Biggs, of The National Football Post, reports Oakland Raiders head coach Tom Cable allegedly knocked assistant coach Randy Hanson out of his chair and up against a wall and into a cabinet, according to a source. The source said Cable was choking Hanson and threatening his life until other people pulled Cable off of Hanson but Cable went after Hanson again. 'Cable said, 'I am going to kill you, I am going to kill you,' as he was choking him,' according to the source.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
I'm not naive enough to think harsh words and even scuffles don't happen on staffs. But this is pretty ugly. A lot depends on Hanson and how much he wants to push this.
PHI - RB LeSean McCoy makes numerous errors in loss to Colts
Source: Sheil Kapadia - Philly.com
Sheil Kapadia, of Philly.com, reports that second-round pick RB LeSean McCoy made at least three errors in the 23-15 loss to the Colts on Thursday, August 20. He dropped a perfectly-thrown slant from Donovan McNabb, he missed a block that resulted in a sack of A.J. Feeley, and he bounced a run outside for one yard on a 1st-and-5 when he could have converted the first down if he had cut upfield.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
This is to be expected from McCoy, who has more natural ability than experience harnessing that ability.
JAX - WR Mike Walker not expected to play Saturday
Source: Associated Press
The Associated Press reports Jacksonville Jaguars WR Mike Walker (ankle) is not expected to play in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 22.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Walker is starting to fall far behind guys like Davone Bess, Earl Bennett, and Robert Meachem on our late round WR sleeper list.
ATL - QB Matt Ryan feeling more comfortable
Source: Chris Mortensen - ESPN.com
Chris Mortensen, of ESPN.com, reports Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan said he feels more comfortable with the offense and his ability to read defenses. 'People don't realize when you're a rookie, it's really not reading defenses that throws you off as a rookie. It's getting the play in your ear, trying to call that play and get everything out, and then execute. It's tough and takes some time to learn and I'm lot more comfortable,' Ryan said.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Some QBs that are successful in their rookie years have taken a step back in their sophomore year, but that is due at least in part to attitude, something that doesn't seem like a problem for Ryan.
SF - RB Frank Gore may play Saturday
Source: Matt Maiocco - The Santa Rosa Press Democrat
Matt Maiocco, of The Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary said RB Frank Gore may play one series in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 22.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Gore is most definitely ready for the regular season, and the 49ers are wise to limit his action from here on out.
HOU - WR Jacoby Jones may not make final roster
Source: Dale Robertson - the Houston Chronicle
Dale Robertson, of the Houston Chronicle, reports the Houston Texans are impressed with WR Jacoby Jones' physical tools but believe he needs to be more consistent on the field to earn a spot on the final roster. Head coach Gary Kubiak said Jones has three more weeks to show he can be more consistent.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Jones is extremely athletic, and he is the type of player that can score anytime the ball is in his hands. Unfortunately, ball security and consistency has been an issue during his pro career. Jones has also had trouble with nagging injuries, and is clearly on the roster bubble this year.
CAR - WR Steve Smith a game-time decision for Saturday
Source: Steve Reed - CarolinaGrowl.com
Steve Reed, of CarolinaGrowl.com, reports Carolina Panthers head coach John Fox said WR Steve Smith (shoulder) will be a game-time decision for the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 22.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Steve Smith is one of the toughest players in the game, but the Panthers would be wise to take it easy on him until he is 100% healthy.
GB - RB Ryan Grant says hamstring not bothering him
Source: Pete Dougherty - the Green Bay Press-Gazette
Pete Dougherty, of the Green Bay Press-Gazette, reports Green Bay Packers RB Ryan Grant said the hamstring injury that bothered him throughout last season has not been a factor during the offseason and training camp.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Grant may not get off to a slow start this year because he has remained injury free this year. The Packers have a deep backfield, so the Packers may keep Grant on a short leash if he doesn't perform well.
STL - Ahman RB Ahman Green on the 'ready' list
Source: Jim Thomas - St. Louis Post-Dispatch
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports free agent running back Ahman Green visited Rams Park on Wednesday, but no signing is imminent. He is simply on the St. Louis Rams' "ready list" of potential players to consider if the team suffers an injury at the position or decides to make a move.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Green would not be a threat to Steven Jackson, but could provide them with veteran depth. He would compete with Samkon Gado, Antonio Pittman, and Kenneth Darby if signed, and could make the final roster because of his versatility and experience.
MIN - QB Tarvaris Jackson added to Bomber's negotiation list
Source: Sportsnet.ca
Sportsnet.ca is reporting the struggling Winnipeg Blue Bombers have added Vikings quarterback Tarvaris Jackson to the team's negotiation list, giving Winnipeg exclusive rights to the player should he be released by the NFL club.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
You just never know, at least that's what the Blue Bombers are thinking here. If (when?) Jackson is released, there will be several NFL teams that will put waiver claims in for him. Some teams have very ugly backup QB situations, and would see Jackson as an upgrade over what they have. A list of teams that could be interested - Cincinnati, Carolina, Buffalo, St. Louis, and Jacksonville. The Vikings may get a trade offer for Jackson if he performs well in the preseason.
TEN - RB Javon Ringer the favorite for 3rd RB
Source: Jim Wyatt - The Tennesseean
The Tennessean is reporting Javon Ringer is off to a nice start with the Titans. He carried his good offseason into training camp and the preseason. In Saturday's preseason win against the Buccaneers, Ringer ran for a team-high 51 yards on seven carries, including a 36-yard touchdown. Right now he's leading the contenders for the No. 3 running back spot behind veterans Chris Johnson and LenDale White, and each day he is looking more like a lock for the 53-man roster.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Titans are going to give him a shot at returning kickoffs, which is a great way to feature his explosiveness in the open field. Ringer proved last year at Michigan State that he could be a bellcow running back, and he finished his final collegiate season with 390 carries. However, his body did break down and that was part of the reason why he fell in the draft. Ringer has a good initial burst, and speed to the corner. He is a willing runner between the tackles, but is best used in space where he is really dangerous.
HOU - RB Arian Foster practices Thursday
Source: Nick Scurfield - HoustonTexans.com
Nick Scurfield, of HoustonTexans.com, reports Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (hamstring) practiced fully Thursday, Aug. 20, and will probably play in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 22.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We're very interested in how Foster performs, because if he makes the team, that would give head coach Gary Kubiak another short yardage running back option if (when) Chris Brown gets hurt.
DET - Starting QB for Saturday still undecided
Source: Carlos Monarrez and Nicholas J. Cotsonika - the Detroit Free Press
Carlos Monarrez and Nicholas J. Cotsonika, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said he has in mind who the starting quarterback will be for the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 22, but that he would not divulge it until after he informed the players. Schwartz said earlier in the week that QB Matthew Stafford would start with QB Daunte Culpepper taking over.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Culpepper has had a good camp, but Stafford has looked remarkably comfortable for a rookie, so Culpepper might not be able to hold him off, no matter how well C-Pep plays this weekend.
CIN - RB Cedric Benson busy Thursday
Source: Joe Reedy - the Cincinnati Enquirer
Joe Reedy, of the Cincinnati Enquirer, reports Cincinnati Bengals RB Cedric Benson touched the ball on 13 of the team's 15 plays in the first quarter Thursday, Aug. 20. Benson finished the game with 10 carries for 28 yards and three receptions for 25 receiving yards.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
It's nice to see the Bengals willing to feature Benson, but we have to think this was a by-product of Carson Palmer being out with an ankle injury.
NE - QB Tom Brady gets hit twice Thursday
Source: Associated Press
The Associated Press reports New England Patriots QB Tom Brady was hit twice on his 13 snaps during the team's preseason game Thursday, Aug. 20, but he was able to quickly get up both times. Brady was able to remain upright during his first preseason game. He finished the game Thursday 4-for-8 for 57 yards.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Brady probably prefers taking a few big hits in the preseason than getting to regular season action without getting a leveled once or twice to see what it feels like on his surgical repaired knee.
NYG - WR Domenik Hixon the best receiver of camp
Source: Ralph Vacchiano - the New York Daily News
Ralph Vacchiano, from the New York Daily News, reports that it's possible, now that we're nearing the end of camp that Domenik Hixon has been the best receiver here this summer. He's certainly been the most consistent. And he's been the best at getting open. He did it again today, finding a big seam between CB Kevin Dockery and S Michael Johnson to catch a deep pass from Eli Manning.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Hixon is somehow a forgotten man in certain fantasy circles, and he shouldn't be. He could catch 60+ passes in the Giants offense this year, as Eli Manning gets used to his new weapons. Hixon is a very hard worker, and Manning will look to him early and often.
CIN - WR Chad Ochocinco kicks PAT Thursday
Source: Associated Press
The Associated Press reports Cincinnati Bengals WR Chad Ochocinco kicked an extra point Thursday, Aug. 20, because head coach Marvin Lewis is being cautious with PK Shayne Graham (groin). Ochocinco also kicked off to start the second half.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Ochocinco didn't just kick, he looked great doing it. The PAT was high and right down the middle. For the kickoff, the kick had plenty of height and went to about the 9 yard line. This should make for good material on next week's HBO's Hard Knocks.
WAS - DC Blache expects big things from S LaRon Landry
Source: Barry Svrluga - The Washington Post
Barry Svrluga, of The Washington Post, reports Washington Redskins defensive coordinator Greg Blache said he is expecting an excellent season from SS LaRon Landry because of his health. 'I'm looking for a huge year out of LaRon, because he is healthy. This is his third year. He's got the position figured out. This could be a real break-out year for him,' Blache said.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Fantasy owners have been expecting more from Landry, too. He has been a solid player, but he has failed to become a big play safety exhibiting the one part Ed Reed, one part Rodney Harrison game he flashed at LSU.
PIT - RB Willie Parker focused on getting third-down duties back
Source: Ed Bouchette - the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports that RB Willie Parker's main focus in the offseason was getting the third-down RB job back from Mewelde Moore. Parker said, "That was my main focus in the offseason, just work on my hands and give me some plays in the open field one on one vs. a linebacker or one on one vs. a cornerback. That's what I wanted to do and that's what we're planning to do this season."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We don't see it happening, Moore is one of the best third-down RBs in the league. This story still does illustrate Parker's undeniable work ethic.
That'll do it for today, Folks. Thanks for reading and I hope you have a great Saturday. We'll see you tomorrow with the update.
