DEN - RB Knowshon Moreno out 1-2 weeks
Source: Mike Klis - The Denver Post
Updating previous reports, Mike Klis, of The Denver Post, reports Denver Broncos RB Knowshon Moreno (knee) will miss one to two weeks because of a slight medial collateral ligament sprain, according to a source.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Broncos are hopeful to have him by the final preseason game, and if he's ready he could get more work than the other backs that week. This will push the Broncos more towards a RBBC approach with Correll Buckhalter, Peyton Hillis, and LaMont Jordan all getting work.
ATL - RB Michael Turner plays well Saturday
Source: Associated Press
The Associated Press reports Atlanta Falcons RB Michael Turner ran for 63 yards and one touchdown on six carries in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 15.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Turner ran with his trademark power, but when he got to the open field he was able to outrun the Lions' secondary to the endzone. He has good moves in the backfield, great vision, and instincts for running the football. He'll fall no later than the number four pick in nearly every fantasy league.
DEN - WR Brandon Marshall could return Sunday
Source: Lindsay H. Jones - Denver Post
The Denver Post reports Denver Broncos WR Brandon Marshall (leg) is nearly recovered from the leg injury he suffered two weeks ago and should return to practice soon, perhaps as early as Sunday, Aug. 16.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Marshall needs to get on the practice field for many reasons, but the first and foremost reason is to learn this complex offense. The Broncos wide receivers will change their routes depending on what the defense shows them pre-snap. Marshall also needs to develop chemistry with his starting QB.
DAL - HC Phillips praises WR Sam Hurd
Source: Jeff Caplan - the Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Jeff Caplan, of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, reports Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips praised WR Sam Hurd's performance in the team's preseason opener Thursday, Aug. 13. Hurd had two holding penalties in the game, but he caught all five of his passes for 79 yards. Phillips said, "It was obvious that Sam played real well, and he'll get some playing time because of that."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Hurd is surging past Miles Austin, and at this rate, Patrick Crayton could soon be in his sights.
DET - QB Matthew Stafford throws touchdown, interception Saturday
Source: Associated Press
The Associated Press reports Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford went 7-for-14 for 114 yards with one touchdown and one interception in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 15.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The ball came out of Stafford's hand with very good velocity, and the young gun would've had a better completion percentage if Keary Colbert would've caught the three passes thrown his way. Every young QB with a strong arm must learn that there are some instances where it's better to throw the ball away. Stafford was in trouble, with a defender drafgging him down, when he decided to wing one to the outside - only to have it picked off and returned for a touchdown. His TD pass to Derrick Williams later in the game was a thing of beauty - on time, in stride, placed on the correct shoulder where Williams could get to it and the defender could not. All in all, a solid start for the 2009 #1 overall pick.
PHI - Reid tells QB Kevin Kolb and Feeley their jobs are safe
Source: Brian Seltzer - ESPN 950 in Philadelphia
Brian Seltzer, from ESPN 950 in Philadelphia, reports on his twitter feed that Eagles head coach Andy Reid told both Kevin Kolb and A.J. Feeley that they still have jobs.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
It's possible the Eagles could carry four quarterbacks on the roster, but if Vick continues to progress well the team may decide to trade away one of their capable backups. If preseason injuries hit a team's QB corps, we wouldn't be surprised if someone came forward with an offer for Kevin Kolb. With a possible regular season suspension looming for Vick, the Eagles may wait until a suspension is handed down to decide the fate of Kolb and Feeley.
JAX - Five ruled out for preseason game Monday
Source: CBSSports.com
CBSSports.com reports Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio has ruled out WR Mike Walker (ankle), WR Mike Thomas (hamstring), RB Montell Owens (knee), DT Jonathan Lewis (ankle) and CB Don Carey (shoulder) for the team's preseason game Monday, Aug. 17.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The injuries to Walker and Thomas will open the door of opportunity for rookie wide receivers Tiquan Underwood and Jarett Dillard.
SF - QB Shaun Hill, Alex Smith solid Friday
Source: Associated Press
The Associated Press reports San Francisco 49ers QB Shaun Hill and QB Alex Smith were both solid in the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 14, but neither did anything to stand out. Smith finished the game 5-for-7 for 33 yards passing with a touchdown and a sack. Hill was 2-for-2 for 41 yards with two sacks in the game. Head coach Mike Singletary has not decided on a starter for the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 22.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Hill showed his toughness and leadership on the field even though he didn't throw many passes. Smith held on to the ball too long at times, but finished with a touchdown on the day and seemed to get more comfortable as the game went on.
MIN - QB Sage Rosenfels played with tweaked ankle Friday
Source: Rick Alonzo - the St. Paul Pioneer Press
Rick Alonzo, of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, reports Minnesota Vikings QB Sage Rosenfels (ankle) suffered a tweaked ankle during the team's preseason game but was able to play with the injury. He said he is fine, and the injury is not a big deal.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Rosenfels is known as a gamer, so it's not surprising that he'd play through this injury.
PIT - RB Willie Parker practices Saturday
Source: Gerry Dulac - the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Gerry Dulac, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports Pittsburgh Steelers RB Willie Parker (back) participated in practice Saturday, Aug. 15.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
If healthy, Willie Parker will once again be the lead back for the Steelers. He could be replaced in short yardage situations, or at the goalline - but don't count Parker out for some red zone work. Rashard Mendenhall has looked painfully average, so those predicting Parker's demise because of the second-year back may be sadly mistaken.
CIN - QB Carson Palmer could be held out of next preseason game
Source: Geoff Hobson - Bengals.com
Geoff Hobson, of Bengals.com, reports the Cincinnati Bengals may hold out QB Carson Palmer (ankle) of the team's preseason game Thursday, Aug. 20, as a precaution because of his ankle injury.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Bengals know how important Carson Palmer is to the team, so they're going to be very careful with him as he nurses this ankle injury.
PHI - QB Michael Vick surprises new teammates by how quickly he's learned offense
Source: Jason Levine - Delaware Online
Delaware Online is reporting that maybe the biggest surprise from Michael Vick's first practice Saturday with the Eagles wasn't that he still features a cannon for a left arm or held up on a 90-degree day but that Vick already had a firm grasp of the offense and took command in the huddle. Several Eagles on offense and defense were stunned to see that Vick already knew certain routes and patterns and already knew where his receivers belonged and motioned them there. "He learned it so quickly. I was surprised" said wideout and Delaware State product Shaheer McBride. "I saw him out there directing guys. I was like, 'OK, wow. That doesn't look right.' Is he supposed to be directing guys already?"
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
It's good to see that Michael Vick is getting off to such a great start with his new team. We're anxious to see what his role will be during the regular season, and opponents will certainly have to gameplan for Vick as they prepare to play the Eagles.
SF - Singletary excited about Glen RB Glen Coffee
Source: Matt Maiocco - the Santa Rosa Press Democrat
Matt Maiocco, from the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports on his twitter feed that 49ers head coach Mike Singletary was excited from what he saw of rookie RB Glen Coffee. Said he'll be a "great addition" to 49ers as Frank Gore's backup.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Coffee had a great pro debut against the Broncos on Friday night, finishing the game with 14 carries for 67 yards. It is the preseason, and it was against the Broncos, but fantasy owners - especially Gore owners - need to keep Coffee in mind near the end of the draft.
SF - No separation in the WR corps
Source: Matt Maiocco - the Santa Rosa Press Democrat
Matt Maiocco, from the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports on his twitter feed that 49ers head coach Mike Singletary did not see any separation with the WRs, either. Nobody distinguished himself in the game.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The 49ers WR depth chart is not set in stone, but right now Isaac Bruce and Josh Morgan are listed as starters. Behind them players like Dominique Zeigler, Jason Hill, and Arnaz Battle are fighting for position in the pecking order. When/if rookie Michael Crabtree signs that could shake up the order as well.
SF - RB Thomas Clayton may have torn ACL
Source: Matt Maiocco - The Santa Rosa Press Democrat
Matt Maiocco, of The Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports the initial diagnosis on San Francisco 49ers RB Thomas Clayton's (knee) knee is a torn anterior cruciate ligament, according to a source.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
This could spell the end of Thomas Clayton's time in San Francisco. He was already being outplayed by rookie Kory Sheets in training camp, and this injury would most likely prevent him from playing in the 2009 season.
NYG - WR Sinorice Moss says he will play Monday
Source: Ralph Vacchiano - the New York Daily News
Ralph Vacchiano, of the New York Daily News, reports New York Giants WR Sinorice Moss (hamstring) said he will be able to play in the team's preseason game Monday, Aug. 17.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Moss was having a good offseason until he injured his hamstring. With a strong preseason he could work his way into the regular rotation at wide receiver.
PHI - QB Michael Vick very accurate on deep throws
Source: Brian Seltzer - ESPN 950 in Philadelphia
Brian Seltzer, from ESPN 950 in Philadelphia, reports on his twitter page that Michael Vick was dead on accurate deep 45 YD spiral to Jeremy Maclin down sideline over Jack Ikegwuonu.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Vick has been surprisingly accurate for a quarterback two years removed from the game of football. This is a good sign for his first day, but the Eagles are bringing him along slowly as he gets used to his new offense.
MIA - WR Ernest Wilford improving at TE
Source: Edgar Thompson - the Palm Beach Post
Edgar Thompson, of the Palm Beach Post, reports Miami Dolphins TE Ernest Wilford has performed well in the last few practices, but head coach Tony Sparano said Wilford still is a work in progress. 'He's getting better. It's tough sledding down there for all those guys, but particularly for a receiver who's making a transition. I see him getting better. He's not afraid to put his face in there, which are good qualities. But fundamentally, there are some things certainly that he doesn't know as well as some of those other tight ends that he's catching up on,' Sparano said.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The WR corps is crowded in Miami, but the team may decide to keep Wilford around as a TE. The NFL is all about mismatches, and Wilford could play like a "super-sized" receiver on passing downs.
BAL - Looking at QB Cleo Lemon?
Source: Dan Kolko - MASNsports.com
MASNsports.com is reporting the Ravens are looking to add a veteran QB, and have worked out Cleo Lemon.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Lemon played under Ravens offensive coordinator Cam Cameron with the Dolphins in 2007, and knows the system. That experience in this offense means he could step right in and not be too far behind, even though we're two weeks into training camp.
MIN - RB Adrian Peterson has sights set on 2,000 yards
Source: Associated Press
The Associated Press reports Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson is looking to rush for 2,000 yards. 'It is something I think about and dream about,' Peterson said. 'I don't focus on it because you'll never accomplish it that way, but that's my bar. It will always be 2,000 or more. I hope to accomplish that some day.'
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
If there is a back in the NFL that could rush for 2,000 yards it is certainly Adrian Peterson.
CIN - QB Carson Palmer solid in preseason debut
Source: Associated Press
The Associated Press reports Cincinnati Bengals QB Carson Palmer (ankle) threw for 133 yards on 7-for-11 passing with one interception during the team's preseason opener Friday, Aug. 14.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Palmer ended up with a mild ankle sprain, but later said that it was nothing major.
NYJ - HC Ryan not ready to name starting quarterback for next preseason game
Source: Associated Press
The Associated Press reports New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said following the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 14, that he was not ready to name a starting quarterback for the team's next preseason game.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Mark Sanchez had a fabulous debut in his first preseason game, but apparently it wasn't enough to secure the starting job.
CIN - Lewis wants more consistency from WR Chris Henry
Source: Josh Katzowitz - CBSSports.com
CBSSports.com reports Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said he wants more consistency from WR Chris Henry, particularly better concentration, despite Henry's seven-catch performance in the preseason opener. 'I let him play a little bit longer tonight just to get (the drops) out of him. He's had some drops in practice. If he's going to help us at all, he needs to be more consistent so we can count on him all the time,' Lewis said.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
This has always been the case with Chris Henry. He is supremely talented, but his hands are inconsistent. Henry seems to be a little like Plaxico Burress on the field. If a pass is over his head, or seemingly out of reach, Henry will come down with the ball. If a pass is right on the mark he will sometimes drop the easy ones. Henry has been guilty of thinking about after the catch before securing the ball, and he still needs to work on that.
DEN - HC McDaniels says QB Kyle Orton remains starter
Source: Michael Erler - CBSSports.com
CBSSports.com reports Denver Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels said QB Kyle Orton remains the team's starting quarterback despite throwing three interceptions in the preseason opener. 'We made a few mistakes, but we're not going to start tail-spinning and (making) knee-jerk decisions after the first preseason game,' McDaniels said.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Orton may be getting a break now, but if he continues his poor play the young head coach will change his tune. Chris Simms looked good against the 49ers, but hasn't outperformed Orton in training camp. Football fans need to remember how bad Matt Cassel looked in preseason last year - after years in the system! There are a lot of moving parts to this offense, and timing is critical. We thought Orton seemed to have poor timing with Brandon Stokley, something that will improve with more time.
CAR - WR Steve Smith says shoulder is sore
Source: Steve Reed - CarolinaGrowl.com
Steve Reed, of CarolinaGrowl.com, reports Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith (shoulder) said his shoulder does not hurt as much. He added, "Sleep is kind of difficult, but it's all right. I wouldn't say I woke up and said, 'OK, I'm healed.
But it's getting more tolerable."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
According to Smith it's a "deep bone bruise" but the receiver went on to say the pain began to decrease after the swelling subsided.
NYJ - WR David Clowney catches touchdown pass Friday
Source: Associated Press
The Associated Press reports New York Jets WR David Clowney caught three passes for 102 yards, including a 50-yard touchdown pass, during the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 14.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
No matter who is throwing the ball, David Clowney seems to have a knack for catching long TDs in the preseason. Last year, he made a training camp star out of Brett Ratliff, this year, he might help Mark Sanchez win the starting QB job and help Erik Ainge make the final roster.
NFL - WR Plaxico Burress would be suspended if he signs with a team
Source: Gary Myers - the New York Daily News
Gary Myers, of the New York Daily News, reports unrestricted free-agent WR Plaxico Burress (Giants) would be suspended for at least eight games this season if he signs with a team, according to a source.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Burress' lawyer predicts that a trial won't begin until the spring, so Plaxico is free to sign with any team. If he were to sign there is no doubt that commissioner Roger Goodell would then hand down a big suspension. At this point, it looks like a team will have to get really desperate before any contract is offered to the troubled wide receiver.
That'll do it for today, Folks. Thanks for reading and hope you have a great rest of your weekend. See you tomorrow with the update.
