TEN - RB LenDale White not guaranteed more work
Source: Mike Wilkening - Pro Football Weekly
Mike Wilkening, from Pro Football Weekly, reports RB LenDale White's commitment to getting in shape was evident in the offseason, and it continued into training camp, where he reported at 228 pounds and noted he felt more explosive than he did in the past. However, White's new physique might not lead to an increase in work; a source close to the club expects White to get roughly the 205 touches he got last season. The Titans are likely to use second-year RB Chris Johnson more this season, and there has been a lot of excitement about the prospect of a more explosive passing game. The way we hear it, there is, interestingly enough, some concern about whether White can be as effective a short-yardage, goal-line runner after having carried 260 pounds or more earlier in his career.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Some may have thought a slimmer White, in a contract year, would take some more carries away from Chris Johnson - but that's not necessarily the case. White is thought of by some as a power back, but the truth is he was just hard to bring down because of his size and never really blew defenders out of his way. White has always had good footwork, but will have to run with a better pad level and more explosiveness this year. So far in the Hall of Fame Game White has scored one touchdown and looked good in his short yardage and goalline running.
TB - QB Byron Leftwich with the early lead
Source: Rick Stroud - the St. Petersburg Times
Rick Stroud, from the St. Petersburg Times, reports you probably can't win a starting quarterback job during the first week of practice, but you can lose one. So as we examine the race between Luke McCown and Byron Leftwich — sorry, Josh Freeman, your time will come soon — understand that both avoided catastrophe. But Leftwich was better. He made more plays, got the ball in the end zone more consistently and basically converted more believers in the locker room.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The most important note Stroud points out here is the feeling in the lockerroom. Tampa Bay is a team in transition and the job will eventually go to Josh Freeman, but it could be a while as the team may want to sit him for his first year so he can learn the offense. This race is far from over and may change many times during camp - and during the regular season. Fantasy owners should avoid this situation, even for your backup quarterback until a starter is firmly entrenched.
STL - WR Donnie Avery out 4-6 weeks with foot injury
Source: Nick Wagoner - StLouisRams.com
Nick Wagoner, of StLouisRams.com, reports that WR Donnie Avery will be out 4-6 weeks with a foot injury. Head coach Steve Spagnuolo said, "MRI showed more than we thought. 4 to 6 week injury. We'll have more in the morning."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We would say bump up Laurent Robinson or Keenan Burton on this news, but we're not sure either inexperienced wideout can get open against #1 corners. If Avery misses the first few games, or he's ineffective, Marc Bulger could lean on vets like Randy McMichael and Ronald Curry in the short and intermediate passing game. Burton will get Avery's reps with the first team. The injury is especially disappointing for the Rams because Avery was having a good camp.
CHI - RB Kevin Jones a 'gem' of training camp
Source: Brad Biggs - the Chicago Sun-Times
Brad Biggs, from the Chicago Sun-Times, reports one of the gems of camp has been Kevin Jones, who now is clear of any issues from his torn anterior cruciate ligament in 2007. Jones has been assured more playing time, and that should make Forte better as the season goes on.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Bears are hoping to make a Super Bowl run with their new quarterback this year and keeping Forte fresh is a priority for a postseason run. Jones will steal some carries away from Forte this year, but Forte should remain the top receiving back for the team. Jones is now a must-handcuff in the last round for Forte owners.
CHI - TE Greg Olsen is the 'go-to' target
Source: Brad Biggs - the Chicago Sun-Times
Brad Biggs, from the Chicago Sun-Times, reports one of the reasons general manager Jerry Angelo remained calm during the (ongoing?) clamor for the team to find an upgrade at wide receiver is because he knew 2007 first-round pick Greg Olsen was ready to explode. Olsen is the primary read for a lot of stuff the team has been doing, and the Bears are working more to get him vertical in mismatches on safeties and linebackers.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
One of Jay Cutler's favorite targets in Denver was TE Tony Scheffler and it's apparent early in Bears camp that Olsen is now the apple of his eye. Olsen's current ADP is TE5, so most fantasy owners are expecting big things in 2009. If you don't get Jason Witten or Tony Gonzalez, then Olsen makes a great consolation prize with good upside.
JAX - WR Mike Walker suffers lower leg injury
Source: Vic Ketchman - Jaguars.com
Vic Ketchman, of Jaguars.com, reports that Jacksonville WR Mike Walker suffered a lower leg injury in the scrimmage on Saturday, August 8. Head coach Jack Del Rio said "they don't think it's anything serious". X-ray were taken and they came back negative.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Walker has to be frustrated. At least it's not a knee injury. We still like him as a deep sleeper, but we need to see him stay on the field before he justifies the cost of a roster spot.
CLE - No separation in QB competition
Source: Steve King - Scout.com
Steve King, from Scout.com, reports much like conjoined twins, neither Quinn nor Anderson were able to separate from the other as the Great QB Debate rages on in Cleveland.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
If you could genetically combine the two quarterbacks you would have one of the best in the game. Unfortunately commissioner Goodell would probably frown on such genetic experiments, so the Browns are left with what they have. Quinn can throw underneath passes with touch and accuracy, but can't throw deep. Anderson loves to throw deep passes but is a gunslinger and will force too many passes. This competition is likely to not be decided until the final preseason game.
PHI - RB Brian Westbrook remains sidelined
Source: Reuben Frank - The Burlington County Times
Reuben Frank, of The Burlington County Times, reports Philadelphia Eagles RB Brian Westbrook (ankle) remained out of practice Saturday, Aug. 8.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Eagles are going to take it easy on their star running back and they will make sure he's 100% for the regular season. In the meantime, rookie LeSean McCoy has been wowing teammates, coaches, and media alike with his quickness, agility, and instincts.
SF - TE Vernon Davis, RB Frank Gore, Brooks looking good in camp
Source: Matt Barrows - the Sacramento Bee
Matt Barrows, from the Sacramento Bee, reports Vernon Davis, Frank Gore, and Ahmad Brooks are looking good in training camp so far.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Vernon Davis is looking good in practice, even catching passes over his shoulder and the team may lean on the TE position more than ever in 2009. Frank Gore is looking good, as expected, and in Jimmy Raye's balanced offense he could put up very good numbers - if he can stay healthy. Ahmad Brooks is getting first-team reps because Parys Haralson's week-long hip injury and is showing his potential.
WAS - QB Colt Brennan catching HC Zorn's eye in camp
Source: Eric Edholm - Pro Football Weekly
Eric Edholm, from Pro Football Weekly, reports the preseason will be a proving ground for third-string QB Colt Brennan, who has a chance to move up the pecking order at some point if he can prove to be consistent and controlled when he gets what is expected to be a good amount of action in the exhibition season. Already head coach Jim Zorn has noticed the difference between Brennan's rookie season and this year. "I think Colt has come a long way," Zorn said. "I think the way I get on him, he probably doesn't feel like he's come a long way, but I'm pushing him and he has come a long way."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
There are some who have speculated that Brennan could take the starting job away from Jason Campbell before the regular season, but that is a little far fetched at this time. Brennan could beat out Todd Collins for the second-string job and if he continues to impress the Redskins may feel that Brennan is their QB of the future. The 2010 QB class looks like it will be very impressive and the Redskins may be tempted to select a rookie QB next year unless Brennan blows them away.
SF - Team responding to OC Jimmy Raye
Source: Kevin Lynch - The San Francisco Chronicle
The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting the offense is responding to offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye's professorial manner, his shorter playbook, and his insistence on execution. Shaun Hill said if a play isn't run correctly, the team not only does the play again, they might do the entire period over again. Also, the offense doesn't lack for flair with shovel passes, plenty of motion and even some trickery.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Mike Martz (and the headache of learning his offense) is gone and the team should feature a more balanced attack. The 49ers will try and be a run-heavy offense featuring Frank Gore and rookie Glen Coffee. However, they won't be afraid to air it out and spread it around to receivers like Josh Morgan, Isaac Bruce, and tight end Vernon Davis.
IND - Manning comments on WR Pierre Garcon improving
Source: IndyFootballReport.com
IndyFootballReport.com reports Peyton Manning commented on the improvement of WR Pierre Garcon. "We are expecting big things out of Pierre this year. He's a very hard worker. I really feel like he got better in his rookie year even though he wasn't playing a lot. He didn't waste a year. When he was called upon in certain situations, he knew what he had to do. He's got tremendous speed, and that is something I'm sure all you can see. He can run and he can get deep. That's a good quality in the NFL, and there are some things you can do with a guy like that. I know he is kind of competing for that third receiver position. When we go three wide, I know he wants to be on the field. He is primarily more of an outside receiver; he works the right and the left, not as much as the slot. And I think he's off to a good start."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Colts beat writer John Oehser recently told us that both Garcon and rookie Austin Collie would split time as the #3 receiver for the Colts this year. Garcon and Collie have different skill sets, and the team will look for opportunities to use each one.
NYJ - No one seizing the WR2 job
Source: Mark Cannizzaro - The New York Post
The New York Post is reporting Rex Ryan, who's in search of a second starting WR opposite Jerricho Cotchery has been mildly disappointed that no one has stepped up for the No. 2 spot, said he joked with WRs coach and former NFL WR Henry Ellard, saying, "Henry might be the best receiver on the field for us.''
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Ouch. The #2 wide receiver is actually the third or fourth target on the team behind WR Jerricho Cotchery, TE Dustin Keller, and RB Leon Washington. Brad Smith, Chansi Stuckey, David Clowney and Wallace Wright are all competing for that spot and the team is waiting for someone to elevate their game.
NO - WR Marques Colston shines in scrimmage
Source: WWLTV.com
WWLTV.com is reporting wide receiver Marcus Colston was the early standout in the scrimmage catching all six balls thrown to him, including a one-yard touchdown from Mark Brunell. When Brunell was asked why he threw so much to Colston early, he said, "Because I'm smart," because Colston is a great target.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
It's good to hear that Colston is looking good in game situations. He's battling back from injury, and if healthy should take his place as a top tier wide receiver in the NFL. He's at the bottom of that list, but he can easily put up WR1 numbers.
KC - RB Jamaal Charles one of the most impressive players
Source: Kent Babb - the Kansas City Star
Kent Babb, from the Kansas City Star, reports on his twitter feed RB Kolby Smith isn't even healthy yet. He's still on the PUP list. Jamaal Charles really has been one of the Chiefs' more impressive players so far.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Larry Johnson may be the starting running back, but it doesn't mean Charles won't have a big role with the team. Charles will be the pass-catching/change of pace back for the Chiefs once again this year. With the defense likely to struggle this year it could mean more passing as the Chiefs try and stay in games. This means more opportunity for Jamaal Charles.
JAX - QB David Garrard having an up and down camp
Source: Michael C. Wright - the Florida Times-Union
Michael C. Wright, of the Florida Times-Union, reports so far at camp, David Garrard hasn't looked especially sharp in drills. Tyron Brackenridge stepped in front of an errant Garrard throw for an interception during Friday's morning workout that would've gone for a touchdown. Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said part of those perceived struggles at camp can be attributed to Garrard working with a variety of young receivers. "Mechanically, he's been very sound, making good decisions," Del Rio said. "It's about building that trust with him and the receivers, getting on the same page."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Garrard is getting used to the new weapons he has on offense like Torry Holt, Mike Thomas, and Jarett Dillard. He will have to have a good season so the rumblings about needing a new quarterback (like Florida's Tim Tebow) don't begin.
MIA - QB Pat White already better than John QB John Beck
Source: Armando Salguero - the Miami Herald
Armando Salguero, from the Miami Herald, reports rookie Pat White is already better than former Dolphins QB John Beck. He has better control of the huddle. He is more mobile than Beck. And, seemingly, more courageous than Beck in that he attacks the defense rather than letting the defense attack him. White is more apt to throw down the field than Beck, who became frustratingly timid with checkdown passes. Yes, Beck has a better arm and probably always will. But what good is a strong arm if you only use it for 5-yard dump passes? Yes, Beck is built bigger and stronger than White. But what good is a bigger body, if Beck rarely put that body in motion by leaving the pocket?
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Notice how the first thing Salguero mentions is a stronger command of the huddle. John Beck and his quiet-as-a-church-mouse cadence are now in Baltimore, but during his time with the Dolphins it became apparent that he was far from being a franchise quarterback. This reports says a lot about White and his progress as a rookie, but is also says a lot about Beck who some think could be more than a backup quarterback.
SF - RB Frank Gore calls out TE Vernon Davis
Source: Daniel Brown - the San Jose Mercury News
Daniel Brown, from the San Jose Mercury News, reports Frank Gore wants to see more maturity out of Vernon Davis, and he told him so. "It's his fourth year now. Now it's time," Gore said Saturday. The 49ers running back spoke to reporters a day after Davis said some teammates were upset by his latest training-camp fight. Coach Mike Singletary punished the entire team after Davis' scuffle by making players run sideline-to-sideline sprints. Gore was among those unamused. "I wasn't mad about having to run gassers," he said. "I just feel it's his fourth year now, and I told him it shouldn't be him now. Everybody makes mistakes but it shouldn't be him. OK, a rookie? I accept that."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Vernon Davis has always been a somewhat selfish player, but now it's time for him to be a team player and check his ego at the door. It's good to hear a player like Gore call him out for his behavior.
PIT - RB Willie Parker misses both Saturday practice
Source: Ed Bouchette - The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Updating previous reports, Ed Bouchette, of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports Pittsburgh Steelers RB Willie Parker (back spasms) was held out of both practices Saturday, Aug. 8.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
He's been dealing with back spasms, but the team doesn't see this as a serious injury. In the meantime, second-year running back Rashard Mendenhall is getting more opportunity to show why he was a first-round pick.
SF - RB Frank Gore having an outstanding camp
Source: John Crumpacker - The San Francisco Chronicle
John Crumpacker, of The San Francisco Chronicle, reports San Francisco 49ers RB Frank Gore is tearing up training camp. He had an improved offseason conditioning program and now has a renewed sense of purpose within offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye's system. 'I feel fast, strong, ready,' Gore said. Raye said Gore has the eye of the tiger this year.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Gore is definitely worth a late first-round pick this year, but his potential is not quite as explosive as the top 6-8 RBs on most boards, even with this great buzz.
Source: John Clayton - ESPN
John Clayton, of ESPN, reports that while WR Pierre Garcon has the early lead for the third wide receiver job according to most reports, "this looks to be a position by committee."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Clayton says Garcon has an "Anquan Boldin" type body, and Colts beat writer John Oehser complimented the aestethics of his game when he was on the Audible. Oehser also echoed Clayton's sentiment that this will be a role that uses multiple players, so even if Anthony Gonzalez or Reggie Wayne go down, there might not be a clear replacement to run to the waiver wire to pick up.
DEN - WR Eddie Royal learning every receiver spot
Source: Mike Klis - The Denver Post
Mike Klis, of The Denver Post, reports since Denver Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels arrived from New England, many have taken the assumption Broncos WR Eddie Royal will play the role of Wes Welker, and WR Brandon Marshall will play the role of Randy Moss in the Denver system. The fit, according to Klis, is not that snug. While Royal has every bit of Welker's quickness, he also has more deep-ball speed than Marshall does. Royal says he cannot put a label on it, as he has seen a lot of different receivers run the routes he is going to be running for Denver. 'I'm learning every receiver position right now,' Royal said.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Kyle Orton has already commented on how fun this system is for the QB. If Eddie Royal gets Wes Welker's short and intermediate targets rife with run after catch opportunity, and Randy Moss's big play targets, he could find himself well inside the top 10 fantasy WRs this year. We think he's a very solid pick as a WR2 if you don't double up on WR in the first three rounds.
GB - TE Jermichael Finley poised to be a breakout star
Source: Kevin Seifert - ESPN.com
Kevin Seifert, from ESPN.com, reports a number of people insist that Jermichael Finley is poised to be one of the Packers' breakout stars this season, someone who is as comfortable on the line of scrimmage as he is split out wide and who could force significant changes in the way defenses approach their offense. Everything I've seen so far leads me to agree. Finley has rebounded from a shaky rookie season, one the Packers have attributed to immaturity. Built like an NBA small forward, Finley's speed and athletic ability have made him "unguardable" during practice, Rodgers said Friday. And coach Mike McCarthy said Finley's blocking skills have improved to the point where he can be deployed in any formation and for any role. "I'm just excited and confident with what I'm about to get into," said Finley, a third-round draft choice out of Texas last season. "When I was at Texas, I used to look at Texas Tech's [passing scheme] and say, 'Man, I would love to have that offense.' And now, basically, it's come true. I'm just going to love it this year when the real games come."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Finley is extremely athletic and plays a lot like Denver tight end Tony Scheffler. He creates mismatches every time he's on the field because he's too big for a safety to cover, and he's too fast for most linebackers to cover. The Packers already have the best WR corps in the game today, and Finley only gives them another weapon to go to when they air it out.
