CHI - Turner says RB Kevin Jones will have pretty good role

Source: Brad Biggs - the Chicago Sun-Times

Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Ron Turner said RB Kevin Jones will have a pretty good role as RB Matt Forte's backup. Turner said, "He'll just be a guy to spell [starter] Matt [Forte] in our base package. He's quicker, he's faster, playing with more confidence. He's not tentative on the knee or anything. He's had a great offseason. He's going to be productive for us. He's going to have a pretty good role."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Turner has used a two-back system before, with former Bears RB Thomas Jones carried 296 times in 2006 while former RB Cedric Benson had 157 carries. This is just another reason to temper expectations for Matt Forte in his sophomore season. Jay Cutler won't check down as much as Forte, so his receptions will drop - and if Kevin Jones can stay healthy he will steal some carries away from Forte. The Bears are going to try and keep their star RB healthy for what they hope is a playoff run this year.

TB - WR Michael Clayton's hamstring injury not severe

Source: Charlie Campbell - PewterReport.com

Charlie Campbell, of PewterReport.com, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris discussed WR Michael Clayton's (hamstring) injury Thursday, Aug. 6. Morris said, “The only significant one is Clayton, and it is a lot better than we thought. It is not severe at all. He is probably next week, but he'll get several days, and it may be a blessing in disguise because of hard he was practicing as you guys can see. He has a little bit of a hamstring that is deeper than the other ones. He is week-to-week I should say rather than day-to-day. We'll get him several days.”

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Michael Clayton is the number two receiver in Tampa by default. He is actually the third or fourth option for this passing offense behind WR Antonio Bryant, TE Kellen Winslow, and RB Derrick Ward.

OAK - Most impressive rookie receiver has been WR Louis Murphy

Source: Jerry McDonald - ANG Newspapers

Jerry McDonald, from ANG Newspapers, reports Darrius Heyward-Bey appears to have to put aside the issue of dropped passes that plagued his early sessions, but the most impressive rookie receiver continues to be fourth-round pick Louis Murphy.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Murphy has speed to burn (he is a Florida receiver after all) but he's not known as the greatest after the catch. Most every camp report has commented on his consistent hands and route running ability. If DHB doesn't start improving his game he could be outplayed by fellow rookie Louis Murphy.

SF - Quarterbacks say RB Frank Gore has never looked better

Source: John Crumpacker - the San Francisco Chronicle

John Crumpacker, from the San Francisco Chronicle, reports both Shaun Hill and Alex Smith say they've never seen Frank Gore look better. He's fast and fit and motivated to have a great season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mike Martz is gone, so the 49ers should be more balanced on offense. The engine of their offense is Gore, and he should be at the peak of his career. Gore's current ADP is RB9, so expect to take him at the end of the first round or in the early second if you want to add him to your fantasy team.

ARI - RB Chris Wells may not play in first preseason game

Source: Kent Somers - The Arizona Republic

Kent Somers, of The Arizona Republic, reports it appears Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Wells (ankle) will not be able to play in the team's first preseason game because of an ankle injury.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

After missing four days of practice, Wells is improving and coach Whisenhunt believes Wells will be able to practice some next week. The first preseason game is against the Steelers, so the Cardinals may decide to rest Wells and keep him from taking a beating if he's not 100%.

ATL - WR Robert Ferguson signed

Source: J. Michael Moore - AtlantaFalcons.com

J. Michael Moore, of AtlantaFalcons.com, reports that the team has signed WR Robert Ferguson.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There are certainly a lot of other names that were available in free agency that would have gotten us more excited than Ferguson. All in all, we have to say that Brian Finneran is probably the big winner here, as he moves squarely into the #3 WR role, since the team didn't really sign someone to give him a run for that role.

JAX - Looking to keep RB Maurice Jones-Drew fresh during the season

Source: Paul Kuharsky - ESPN.com

Paul Kuharsky, of ESPN.com, reports Jacksonville Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew has been splitting out wide at receiver at times during practice. The Jaguars are using some plays to get the ball in Jones-Drew's hands in space, allowing him to help minimize the hits he takes and keep him fresher longer. 'The total volume (of plays) maybe will go up a little bit for Maurice, but we've already had him very involved,' head coach Jack Del Rio said. 'I think the biggest thing that will happen is that we won't wait until the third series to get him in on first down. We were really bringing him in on third down and then slipping him in later in the game out of deference for Fred (Taylor), and Fred was terrific.' Del Rio went on to say Jones-Drew is now going to start, and the team is going to supplement his carries with other running backs. Del Rio said to look for a slight increase to Jones-Drew's use, while adding: 'Maurice is a playmaker, we need to get the ball in his hands.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

All the better for those taking MJD #1 overall in PPR leagues.

HOU - RB Steve Slaton hopes to have bigger impact

Source: Jordan Godwin - the Houston Chronicle

Jordan Godwin, of the Houston Chronicle, reports Houston Texans RB Steve Slaton said he is looking to make a bigger impact on the offense this season since he has been in the system for a year. 'Being a year in the system is definitely helpful, and I definitely know my place,' Slaton said. 'I know the little things I have to work on.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Slaton has been a forgotten man in the mid-first even though he put up good enough numbers to justify a pick there last year. He should get more carries this year, but we still think he'll get pulled some at the goal line, which only makes him worth a late first round pick.

DEN - WR Eddie Royal emerging as the offensive centerpiece

Source: Associated Press

The Associated Press is reporting head coach Josh McDaniels has cited Eddie Royal's impact as a return man on top of his eagerness to learn the new offensive system that the coach brought with him from New England and his determination to build chemistry with Orton and backup Chris Simms. Both quarterbacks are in their first season in Denver. "Learning the new terminology, learning where to line up, the different motions, it's tough, but at the same time, it's fun and it's challenging," Royal said. "You've got to come out here and challenge yourself, not only physically but mentally. We're working at that every day. Coach is putting challenges in front of us and we're trying to meet them together."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

To be fair, Brandon Marshall hasn't been practicing with the team since hurting his hamstring early in training camp. However, Eddie Royal could be the Wes Welker for this offense and will be utilized on a number of different routes. Royal will be used on crossing routes, out routes, WR screens, and may even sneak behind the defense on some deep routes. All signs are pointing to Royal improving on his solid rookie numbers from last year.

NO - WR Robert Meachem is coming around

Source: Brett Martel - the Associated Press reports with receiver Lance Moore limited while recovering from offseason shoulder surgery

Brett Martel, from the Associated Press reports with receiver Lance Moore limited while recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, Robert Meachem has been practicing with the first team early in training camp and performing as if he belongs. During 11-on-11 drills, Drew Brees has started going to him more on deep balls and in the red zone. On several occasions, the result has been Meachem scoring a touchdown. "He's coming around," Brees said. "I'm really happy for him. I think he has worked extremely hard and we just have to keep finding the right opportunities for him."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This matches earlier reports we've seen on Robert Meachem this offseason. He is very physically gifted, and if injuries continue to plague the other Saints receivers he could get an opportunity at expanded playing time this year.

MIA - WR Patrick Turner super smooth and catching everything

Source: Omar Kelly - the South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Omar Kelly, from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, reports Patrick Turner smoked Eric Green and Gibril Wilson on a 30-yard sideline catch that was a work of art. According to Kelly, Turner's super smooth, and catches everything.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kelly continues to say he hasn't seen one drop yet. Coming from USC there were people in the scouting community that worried the big WR would be another Mike Williams or Dwayne Jarrett. Turner had a good Senior Bowl, but didn't really wow any of the scouts in Mobile. So far in Dolphins training camp the reports have all been positive, and it seems like the team made the right pick when looking to upgrade their receiving corps.

GB - Have had discussions about signing QB Michael Vick

Source: Jason Wilde - the Wisconsin State Journal

Jason Wilde, of the Wisconsin State Journal, reports Green Bay Packers have had legitimate discussions about the possibility of signing unrestricted free-agent QB Michael Vick (Falcons), according to sources.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We think Vick would be terrible fit in Green Bay's surrounding culture at least, if not the team. The Packers offense doesn't run many gadget plays or wildcat looks, and they have two young QBs in Matt Flynn and Brian Brohm.

NYJ - QB Mark Sanchez outperforms QB Kellen Clemens in scrimmage

Source: Dennis Waszak Jr. - The Associated Press

Dennis Waszak Jr., of The Associated Press reports New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez outperformed QB Kellen Clemens during the team's scrimmage Thursday, Aug. 6, possibly giving a slight edge in the team's quarterback competition. Head coach Rex Ryan said, "I wanted to see poise. I also wanted to see the accuracy that he showed. He really did show up."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sanchez was 9-for-15, including four dropped passes, for 70 yards while running the first- and second-team offenses. Clemens was 5-for-7 for 26 yards.

TEN - WR Kenny Britt will be activated Friday

Source: Associated Press

The Associated Press reports Tennessee Titans WR Kenny Britt (hamstring) will be activated off the Physically Unable to Perform list Friday, Aug. 7, but he will not play in the Hall of Fame game Sunday, Aug. 9.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Head coach Jeff Fisher said Britt should play in the team's second preseason game Aug. 15.

CLE - QB Derek Anderson catching up to QB Brady Quinn

Source: Pat Kirwan - NFL.com

Pat Kirwan, from NFL.com, reports according to one front office personnel man, Quinn had the early lead in camp and Anderson has been coming on in the past three days. On Wednesday, Quinn moved the team down the field with the short passing attack. Anderson used a lot more vertical passing and was just as effective. This battle is far from over.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This competition could go down to the wire. Let's just hope they don't go QBBC like Tom Landry did long ago with Roger Staubach and Craig Morton.

CLE - WR Brian Robiskie to have a big role?

Source: Pat Kirwan - NFL.com

Pat Kirwan, from NFL.com, reports Brian Robiskie should make a major contribution this season. He is a solid zone beater because of his route running and a good understanding of the soft spots in the coverage. Keep an eye on him to see how he does against man coverages.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The son of current Falcons WR coach Terry Robiskie is a very savvy receiver for a rookie. He will compete with fellow rookie Mohamed Massoquoi for the starting job opposite Braylon Edwards.

NE - QB Andrew Walter works with second team

Source: Mike Reiss - The Boston Globe

Mike Reiss, of The Boston Globe, reports New England Patriots QB Andrew Walter worked with the second-team offense during practice Thursday, Aug. 6.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

By picking up Andrew Walter the Patriots are giving second-year quarterback Kevin O'Connell some serious competition for the backup position behind Tom Brady.

TB - QB competition continues

Source: Charlie Campbell - PewterReport.com

Charlie Campbell, of PewterReport.com, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris updated the team's quarterback competition between QB Byron Leftwich and QB Luke McCown. Morris said, "They're having days back and forth [Luke and Byron]. One day Byron looks hot, the other day Luke looks hot. The leadership skills are coming out, the tempo got a lot better." Morris added, "We still have to get to that first game to really get separation because that's when they've really have a chance to get hit."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This competition should go back and forth all preseason long. If the veterans look bad the team may decide to go with rookie Josh Freeman.

TB - WR Antonio Bryant misses practice Thursday

Source: Charlie Campbell - PewterReport.com

Charlie Campbell, of PewterReport.com, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Antonio Bryant (knee) missed the team's practice Thursday, Aug. 6.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Head coach Raheem Morris said he ran some routes in practice Wednesday, Aug. 5, and should be ready to go Friday, Aug. 7. Bryant is considered day-to-day.

DET - TE Casey FitzSimmons, WR Bryant Johnson miss practice Thursday

Source: Tom Kowalski - MLive.com

Tom Kowalski, of MLive.com, reports Detroit Lions TE Casey FitzSimmons (ankle) and WR Bryant Johnson (lacerations) did not participate in practice Thursday, Aug. 6. Both are not expected to return for another week or two.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Don't assume Bryant Johnson will beat out Dennis Northcutt for the #2 job when he returns, and be safe when you're driving a golf cart.

JAX - RB Greg Jones will have to earn carries

Source: Paul Kuharsky - ESPN.com

Paul Kuharsky, of ESPN.com, reports Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio said FB Greg Jones will have to earn getting the most carries behind RB Maurice Jones-Drew. 'He's a great athlete, he's very unselfish and I believe in him. I just believe he's a good football player and he's the right kind of guy. But he's got to fight to be the best guy, we're not going to hand anything to anybody,' Del Rio said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones is reportedly leaner and faster, so he is up to the challenge from Jennings. No matter who wins the backup job, the Jags have enough depth at RB to get 500 carries in the running game and still not overwork MJD.

BAL - WR Mark Clayton should be ready by at least Week 1

Source: Jamison Hensley - The Baltimore Sun

Jamison Hensley, of The Baltimore Sun, reports Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said WR Mark Clayton (hamstring) will miss a few preseason games, but will be ready to play by at least Week 1. Harbaugh said Clayton has some significant bleeding in his hamstring.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fellow Ravens beat writer Aaron Wilson ominously said he thinks this could linger. Demetrius Williams is looking like an excellent sleeper right now, and someone further down the depth chart like camp standout Justin Harper could get into the mix if the injury bug bites Williams, as it has in the past.

SD - WR Chris Chambers coming around at camp

Source: Kevin Acee - the San Diego Union-Tribune

Kevin Acee, of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports San Diego Chargers WR Chris Chambers was noticeably quiet on the field at the start of training camp but made some big plays during practice Tuesday, Aug. 4, and is showing he is a good pass catcher.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Chambers has fallen a lot in the minds of FF players since he was considered a fantasy #1 WR for a short bit during his time in Miami. You can get him with a double digit round pick, and in a non-PPR league, he's worth it to see if he starts 2009 hot, since he does have one of the best QBs in the league throwing to him.

DAL - QB Tony Romo-to-WR Roy Williams starting to click

Source: Associated Press

The Associated Press reports that Dallas QB Tony Romo and WR Roy Williams had their best practice on the eighth day of camp, Wednesday, August 5. According to the report, they "hooked up repeatedly on tough plays in the morning", but weren't quite as sharp in the afternoon. "It's feeling real good," Williams said. "It's only a matter of time before it starts clicking. You'll look and see and we'll have turned the page." Head coach Wade Phillips was also pleased with the timing that Williams and Romo are developing.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With all of the reports of the likely breakout season for Martellus Bennett and the possible prevalence of the two TE set in Dallas, we are tempering our already cautious expectations for Williams. He has been injury-prone and inconsistent throughout his career, and we don't think he's worth taking as your WR2. Don't get too swayed by reports like these.

DAL - Base offense should be two TE set

Source: Tom Orsborn - the San Antonio News-Express

Tom Orsborn, of the San Antonio News-Express, reports that "it's becoming increasingly evident the Dallas Cowboys' primary offensive personnel grouping this season will likely be a two-tight end set" because of the emergence of TE Martellus Bennett as a strong option in the passing game.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We love Bennett's long-term upside, but a team producing two starting quality fantasy TEs is unprecedented. Bennett should be a fine backup fantasy TE this year. Don't worry about his effect on Jason Witten - Romo will still look to Witten in crunch time. Bennett will probably take most of his targets away from the second wide receiver, which appears to be Patrick Crayton at this point in time.

SEA - Julius RB Julius Jones has the confidence of the coaches

Source: Ryan Divish - the Tacoma News-Tribune

Ryan Divish, of the Tacoma News-Tribune, reports that Seattle RB Julius Jones is playing with more violence, force, desire, and energy in his second training camp with the team. He has the trust of the new coaching regime. "This is a special year for Julius," running backs coach Casey Dunn said. "He knows it. We all know it. He needs to play well for us. He's certainly raised his level from last season. He's one of those guys that thrive on a challenge, and the challenge for him is to have a real explosive season and help us win ballgames." Jones appears to be playing better because he knows he'll be the starter.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll keep beating the same drum on Jones. We don't blame you if you take Jones in the 7th-10th round range, because it seems strange to get a starting RB so late in the draft, but if Jones starts hot against St. Louis and San Francisco (as he should), sell high. Jones has proven too many times in the last five years that he is not a trustworthy fantasy RB.
