BAL - WR Derrick Mason to return

Source: Aaron Wilson - the Carroll County Times

Aaron Wilson, of the Carroll County Times, reports on his Twitter feed that WR Derrick Mason is back. Wilson writes, "He's sending a letter to the NFL, will be removed from reserve/did not report list. Will be on the field on Sunday."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Well that was quick. Go ahead and restore him to where he was on your draft boards, with a slight downtick for the possibility of him changing his mind... again. Somewhere Joe Flacco is smiling as the team is desperate for help at the WR position.

ARI - RB Chris Wells carted off field Saturday

Source: Darren Urban - AZCardinals.com

Darren Urban, of AZCardinals.com, reports Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Wells (undisclosed) was carted off the field Saturday, Aug. 1, because of an undisclosed injury. It is not known if it is serious but anytime a player is carted off, you take notice.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

According to the Associated Press, Cardinals defensive end Jason Banks rolled up on Wells' left ankle during a drill. The seriousness of the injury was not known as of late Saturday night.

Wells was so jacked up to get to his first practice he barely slept last night. The big RB has a history of nagging injuries, so we'll wait and see if this is something that would cause him to miss a lot of time. Mike Sando from ESPN is reporting that it's an ankle injury. Wells was reportedly rolled up on in practice.

CIN - QB Carson Palmer may workout Saturday night; pitch count will remain

Source: Geoff Hobson - Bengals.com

Geoff Hobson, of Bengals.com, reports Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis indicated following morning workouts Saturday, Aug. 1, that QB Carson Palmer will also work during the evening workouts. However, Palmer will still be on a throw count. Palmer typically sat out of secondary workouts during the offseason. Lewis said the team will continue to be careful about the reps Palmer takes.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Palmer's upside, especially with all the glowing reports about WR Chris Henry, more than justifies the risk you take getting him in the QB9-12 range in early drafts before these restrictions are lifted.

MIN - QB Tarvaris Jackson expected to return to practice next week

Source: NFL.com

Updating previous reports, NFL.com reports Minnesota Vikings QB Tarvaris Jackson (knee) is expected to return to practice sometime next week after suffering a Grade 1 MCL sprain during practice Saturday, Aug. 1.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Vikings get an early scare with this injury, but it sounds like Jackson should make a speedy recovery. In the meantime Sage Rosenfels may gain the advantage over Jackson in the Vikings QB competition.

SF - Singletary not impressed with his QBs

Source: Matt Barrows - the Sacramento Bee

Matt Barrows, from the Sacramento Bee, reports 49ers head coach Mike Singletary wasn't bowled over by either player. In fact, expect Singletary to strike this "I'm not impressed" pose throughout camp in an effort to squeeze the best from his players. "I want to find a guy to lead the team," he said. "And right now I'm not seeing that guy."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The 49ers are trying to make the best out of a bad situation with their quarterbacks. This competition should last well into training camp, and the final decision may come down to who is less terrible.

SF - QB Alex Smith booed, QB Shaun Hill says job is his to take

Source: Dan Brown - the San Jose Mercury News

Dan Brown, from the San Jose Mercury News, reports During practice Saturday morning, quarterback Alex Smith scanned the field, saw nobody open and threw a wobbly pass out of bounds. The crowd booed. They booed hard. Never mind that it was Smith's first snap of training camp. Out here, patience is no virtue. "That's fine, that's part of the deal," Smith said with a laugh. "It's part of playing quarterback in the NFL."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hill said there was nothing significant about opening training camp as the No. 1 quarterback. The only thing that matters to him is who is No. 1 at the end. We like the attitude coming from both quarterbacks, and this is a competition that should last until at least the third week of the preseason.

DEN - RB Correll Buckhalter split out wide, catching a lot of passes

Source: Cecil Lammey - Footballguys.com and FM 104.3 The Fan

Cecil Lammey, from Footballguys.com and FM 104.3 The Fan, reports that running back Correll Buckhalter caught a lot of passes today in practice. He also notes the team is splitting Buckhalter wide and lining him up in the slot.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There is going to be an opportunity for a RB to catch a lot of passes in this offense for many reasons. Josh McDaniels likes to pass to his running backs, Kyle Orton likes to checkdown to his backs, and the Broncos may have to pass more than usual just to stay in games because their defense is suspect.

NYJ - QB Mark Sanchez struggling with cadence

Source: Tim Graham - ESPN.com

Tim Graham, of ESPN.com, reports the New York Jets are looking for rookie QB Mark Sanchez to outright show he can win the starting job. Some players have worried that Sanchez doesn't seem to have the pre-snap cadence down yet, which is leading to some pre-snap penalties.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That sounds like a QB far away from starting in the NFL, but it's still early in training camp.

CIN - WR Chris Henry a changed man, will be more involved in offense

Source: Joe Kay - the Associated Press

Joe Kay, of the Associated Press, reports that Bengals coaches and teammates see a change in WR Chris Henry. "I don't live the way I did in the past," Henry said. "I kind of plan my days out and take it one day at a time and stay away from the wrong people. I'm not partying anymore. I'm just focused on football right now and my family. I don't associate with the same people. I've completely changed everything." Henry has apparently impressed offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski enough in the offseason workouts that he is trying to figure out how to get the #3 wide receiver more involved in the offense.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Plenty of people have been forecasting a big year for Henry and telling the same story about him turning the corner as a human being off the field this year. It might take an injury to Laveranues Coles or Chad Ochocinco for Henry to everyweek fantasy starter relevance, but this news certainly enhances the value of Carson Palmer, who couldn't say enough good things about Henry over the last few months.

CLE - QB Brady Quinn opens camp under center

Source: Steve Doerschuk - the Canton Repository

Steve Doerschuk, of the Canton Repository, reports that Browns QB Brady Quinn was the first signalcaller to take first-team reps at Cleveland training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Don't read anything into it. Head coach Eric Mangini has said that both QBs "will get an equal amount of reps equally distributed through the different sessions." Doerschuk did say that Quinn looked sharper than he did during the spring, so that's encouraged for the Browns, who left OTAs with neither QB playing like a #1.

NO - WR Marques Colston 100%

Source: Nakia Hogan - the New Orleans Times-Picayune

Nakia Hogan, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports that Saints WR Marques Colston said he is fully recovered from offseason microfracture surgery to repair a hole in his left kneecap. "I'm definitely 100 percent injury-free," Colston said. "It's just a matter of now trying to manage it so I can come out of preseason feeling the same way. I'm always going to be leery of that and keep working hard."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Colston is falling to the third round in a lot of start 3 WR/PPR drafts. His upside in one of the best passing offenses in the league justifies taking on the risk that he has a setback in training camp.

DAL - QB Tony Romo/WR Roy Williams chemistry a work in progress

Source: Tim McMahon - the Dallas Morning News

Tim McMahon, from the Dallas Morning News, reports Romo's chemistry with Williams continues to be a work in progress. During today's two practices, Romo targeted Williams three times in competitive action (team and 7-on-7 drills), completing one pass for about 10 yards. "It just takes time together," said Kitna, the Lions' quarterback during Williams' lone Pro Bowl campaign. "Roy is different, looking at him. When you go to throw to him, he's different. He's big, but he's long big, so it can look a little different. When you first start working with him, you end up missing behind him a lot, because you don't realize how much ground he can cover without taking a lot of steps. He maybe doesn't look like he's moving fast, but he is because he's long. It just comes with time. They've put in the time. Now it's time to do it with defense. This is just another part of the evolution."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Many are expecting big things from this Dallas duo, and there may be a few games where they are both in sync. However, Williams is a career underachiever and already seems to be feeling the pressure in Big D. When all is said and done Williams could put up some nice numbers, but figuring out which week to start him may be maddening for fantasy owners.

NO - RB Reggie Bush sits out afternoon practice Saturday

Source: Bradley Handwerger - WWLTV.com

Bradley Handwerger, of WWLTV.com, reports New Orleans Saints RB Reggie Bush (knee) sat out of afternoon practice as a precaution Saturday, Aug. 1.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Saints are going to be careful with their star RB, so this may not be the only time he rests during training camp.

SD - RB LaDainian Tomlinson more focused, up for new challenge

Source: Kevin Acee - the San Diego Union-Tribune

Kevin Acee, of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports San Diego Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson, 30, said his challenge is to prove everyone that thinks he will decline due to hitting the 30-year-old mark wrong. 'I'm looking forward to it,' Tomlinson said. 'In the long run, I think it will help me out.' Tomlinson spent time during the offseason with a doctor specializing in biomechanics. 'My body just wasn't put together properly - the toe, the adductor. I spent some time putting myself back together and then getting back strong. I think that was important,' Tomlinson said. Tomlinson said he got back to the basics during the offseason, too, focusing more on the weight room. 'I do feel stronger. I'm as lean as I've been, but I still have my weight. ... I think I'm a little more focused, a little more disciplined. In order to perform you have to be disciplined and obviously you have to be up for the challenge,' Tomlinson said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Tomlinson will never be the fantasy uberstud he was during the middle of this decade again, but this kind of offseason work could help him keep from breaking down at the end of the year like he did the last two seasons.

DAL - WR Sam Hurd creating buzz

Source: Chris Mortensen - ESPN.com

Chris Mortensen, of ESPN.com, reports Dallas Cowboys WR Sam Hurd has looked been a surprise early on in training camp and is creating a buzz about the possibility of him winning the No. 2 receiver job.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hurd has been a good special teams player for Dallas, but he hasn't exactly seized the opportunity the few times he has gotten on the field as a wide receiver. Miles Austin is the better physical talent, but if he can't stay healthy, Hurd could win the #2 job and keep Patrick Crayton in the slot.

OAK - QB JaMarcus Russell has the support of his teammates

Source: Jerry McDonald - the Contra Costa Times

Jerry McDonald, from the Contra Costa Times, notes that if JaMarcus Russell is bothered by the growing national perception that he's an underachiever and approaching bust status, he hides it well. When Russell met with the media Friday, he talked about the demands of being a starting NFL quarterback and No. 1 overall pick and appeared to understand that some of the criticism would be over the top.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Both Mario Henderson and Johnnie Lee Higgins spoke about the differences they've seen in their QB from last year to this year. Henderson says Russell has taken all the negative comments and used them for motivation to get better. Higgins comments how Russell is a more vocal leader that is willing to accept responsibility when he is wrong.

NYJ - QB Kellen Clemens is good, then bad

Source: J.P. Pelzman - njmg.com

QB Kellen Clemens looked good for most of the workout but then threw two interceptions near the end, both to SS Jim Leonhard on back-to-back passes near the end of practice, both in 11-on-11 play. Clemens finished a combined 6-for-13 in 9-on-9 and 11-on-11 drills, while Mark Sanchez was 4-for-11 with one pick, to S Eric Smith in 9-on-9. [Smith, of course, had 5 INTs during the June mini-camp.] Clemens had a 60-yard TD to Leon Washington out of the backfield and 40-yard completion on a deep middle route to Jerricho Cotchery, who made a terrific catch in between FS Kerry Rhodes and CB Lito Sheppard.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The competition between Clemens and Sanchez may come down to the wire. Even when a starter is finally named, the team may switch back and forth during the season.

OAK - Routt believes WR Javon Walker can be playmaker this season

Source: Steve Corkan - the Oakland Tribune

Steve Corkan, of the Oakland Tribune, reports Oakland Raiders CB Stanford Routt said he believes WR Javon Walker can be a reliable playmaker for the team this season. 'Everyone knows what Javon is capable of doing,' Routt said. 'He wasn't able to perform at the level he is accustomed to last season, but ... we expect big things from him this season.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Routt needs to put the pitcher of Kool-Aid down because even the team knows that Javon Walker's best days are behind him. This isn't Madden, and he simply isn't the same player that he used to be.

DET - WR Bryant Johnson was involved in golf cart accident

Source: Tom Kowalski - MLive.com

Updating a previous report, Tom Kowalski, of MLive.com, reports Detroit Lions WR Bryant Johnson (lacerations) suffered cuts and abrasions all over his body when he was involved in a golf cart accident earlier this summer. The wounds are still healing, and he could miss two weeks.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's a new one. We like Dennis Northcutt even more upon hearing this news.

NO - WR Robert Meachem finally ready to contribute?

Source: Steve Wyche - NFL.com

Steve Wyche, of NFL.com, reports New Orleans Saints WR Robert Meachem is finally showing signs of playing to his potential. Head coach Sean Payton said Meachem is in shape and finally familiar with the team's offensive scheme.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We'll believe it when we see it. Meachem has the physical talent, but he hasn't looked like the most natural receiver in his first two seasons in the league. He won't get higher than fourth on the depth chart at WR unless injuries strike.

NYJ - Ryan speaking highly of QB Kellen Clemens

Source: NY Post

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said QB Kellen Clemens was getting into a groove during practice Saturday, Aug. 1. 'You see that he's got a really good grasp of this system,' Ryan said. 'He knows the system. When you talk about the difference right now with him and Mark (Sanchez), Sanchez is out there going through it, learning a little bit, where Clemens knows it.' Ryan said Clemens makes very few mistakes with his check downs. 'We can't turn the ball over,' Ryan added.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If Clemens really has the full grasp of the system and he's not making mistakes, it will be hard for Sanchez to unseat him as the starter for week 1, unless someone above Ryan is calling the shots.

NYJ - WR Brad Smith could be No. 2 receiver

Source: NY Post

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said WR Brad Smith could be the team's No. 2 receiver. 'I don't know if he is the No. 3 guy because he might be the No. 2 guy. There is great competition at that spot,' Ryan said. Ryan said Smith is a tough, competitive player with great size and hands. 'He will be given every single chance to be that guy,' Ryan said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Even if Smith wins the job, we wouldn't rush out to add him in dynasty leagues. The #2 WR in New York won't be higher than third in the pecking order for targets because of the presence of TE Dustin Keller.

NE - Patriots extend offer to QB Cleo Lemon

Source: Jason La Canfora - the NFL Network

Jason La Canfora, of the NFL Network, reports the New England Patriots have extended an offer to unrestricted free-agent QB Cleo Lemon (Jaguars), according to a source. The two sides are currently working on an agreement.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We started wondering about the Pats signing a veteran QB after Boston Globe writer Mike Reiss suggested that Brian Griese could be a good fit. There's no reason for them to count on Kevin O'Connell to be as good in his second year as Matt Cassel was in his fourth.

DET - GM Mayhew likes top two QBs on roster

Source: Nicholas J. Cotsonika - the Detroit Free Press

Nicholas J. Cotsonika, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Lions general manager Marvin Mayhew said he likes QBs Daunte Culpepper and Matthew Stafford and believes they are two of the most talented quarterbacks the team has had in a while. 'I like our two quarterbacks,' Mayhew said. 'I think we have probably the two most talented - physically talented - quarterbacks we've had since we've been here, and I feel good about those guys.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There have been reports for a while that Mayhew really likes Culpepper and urged the team to sign him last year before the season. Matthew Stafford won't get to start just because he was the #1 overall pick.

TB - QB Luke McCown opens camp as the starter

Source: Pat Yasinskas - ESPN.com

Pat Yasinskas, from ESPN.com, says read into it what you want because it's only the first day of camp. But Luke McCown worked with the first team and Byron Leftwich with the second team. Rookie Josh Freeman shared the rest of the snaps with Josh Johnson.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's only the first day of camp, but McCown will get the first opportunity to be the starting quarterback. Even if the team names McCown or veteran Byron Leftwich the starter at the beginning of the season they may decide to put rookie Josh Freeman in the lineup later in the year if their season is lost.

CHI - The burst is back for RB Kevin Jones

Source: Vaughn McClure - the Chicago Tribune

Vaughn McClure, from the Chicago Tribune, reports that he's liking the looks of Kevin Jones, who dropped a lot of weight and looks ready to be a solid contributor behind Forte. His burst is back.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bears quietly re-signed him to be the backup early in the offseason, and it's a move that may pay off huge this year. Earlier reports have Jones and Forte lining up in the backfield at the same time, and Jones could be used to spell Forte in order to keep him fresh for a playoff run. Jones is looking more and more like a solid late round fantasy pick, and a must-handcuff for Forte owners.

NO - WR Lance Moore feels good, ahead of schedule

Source: Nakia Hogan - the New Orleans Times-Picayune

Nakia Hogan, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports that Saints WR Lance Moore says he feels good, and he is ahead of schedule in his recovery from surgery to repair a torn labrum in April. "I'm going to do what they'll let me," Moore said. "They don't want me to have any contact for another two weeks at least, so I won't be in team drills."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Moore's ADP is very low for a player who was a top 15 WR in every scoring system last year. He didn't get many targets when Reggie Bush and Marques Colston were both in last year, but that could change with the trust he has earned from Drew Brees. The team is being cautious with him, but it sounds like he'll be ready for week 1.

DAL - WR Roy Williams looking good in practice

Source: Vic Carucci - NFL.com

Vic Carucci, of NFL.com, reports Dallas Cowboys WR Roy Williams had a strong practice Friday, July 31, consistently beating defenders in one-on-one drills. His most impressive work came on making grabs on 15-yard out patterns, using the sidelines to his full advantage.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams is looking good in practice, but the career underachiever has to prove it when the games count. He seems to be feeling the pressure now that Terrell Owens is gone, and if he doesn't let it bother him too much he could use that as motivation to have a career year.

OAK - WR Javon Walker says he's ready for renaissance year

Source: Jerry McDonald - ANG Newspapers

Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports Oakland Raiders WR Javon Walker (knee) said he is ready to return to his old form this season following offseason knee surgery. Walker is expected to miss the first two weeks of training camp. 'When I get back out there, I'm just excited about working with some young guys who are going to push me more than I'm going to push them,' Walker said. 'I'm also excited about letting Oakland see what Javon has to offer because I'm young, I'm in my prime right now. My ability hasn't changed, my enthusiasm hasn't changed. I'm just excited to be back to the Javon that was that first year in Denver and the Javon that was in Green Bay and all of a sudden have it translate here.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Walker may be ready to go back to the future, but fantasy owners should stay away from Walker's Delorean. The Raiders are going to look to TE Zach Miller, second-year WR Chaz Schilens, speedster Johnnie Lee Higgins, and rookies Darrius Heyward-Bey and Louis Murphy in the passing game. Add in the fact that Darren McFadden may catch 50+ catches in this offense and it means little opportunity for the oft-injured veteran.
