TB - RB Cadillac Williams expected to be cleared for training camp

Source: Rick Stroud - the St. Petersburg Times

Rick Stroud, of the St. Petersburg Times, reports that RB Cadillac Williams is "is expected to be among the 80 players cleared by the Bucs to begin training camp when the team reports Friday". Holder writes that Williams recovery from a torn patellar tendon in left knee was faster than the one in his right knee that ended his 2007 season because it tore from the bone instead of rupturing like the right patellar.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Simply amazing. Williams work ethic and determination should be admired regardless of what he does over the course of the rest of his career. It's too bad he has had so many injuries, because with that attitude, drive, and the innate talent he had early in his career, Williams could have been a great one. He'll be competing with Clifton Smith to be the #3 RB.

CAR - Plenty of carries for RB DeAngelo Williams, RB Jonathan Stewart

Source: Steve Reed - CarolinaGrowl.com

Steve Reed, of CarolinaGrowl.com, reports the Carolina Panthers will again be a run-first offense in 2009, with RBs DeAngelo Williams and RB Jonathan Stewart carrying a heavy load. The duo combined for 2,351 rushing yards and 28 rushing touchdowns last season.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams carries could drop by as many as thirty on the season as the Panthers may try and get Jonathan Stewart the ball more. Fantasy owners also need to remember the name Mike Goodson. The talented rookie is the Panthers version of Reggie Bush, has lined up as a slot receiver as well as a running back in practice, and the team may decide to use him on a few gadget plays here and there. The Panthers want to be a run-heavy offense, but if they get behind in games the team may have to air it out more than people are expecting.

MIN - QB Tarvaris Jackson and QB Sage Rosenfels to compete for starting job

Source: Judd Zulgad - The Minneapolis Star Tribune

Judd Zulgad, of The Minneapolis Star Tribune, reports Minnesota Vikings QBs Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels will compete for the team's starting quarterback job when training camp opens now that QB Brett Favre has informed the team he is remaining retired.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Interesting that John David Booty wasn't mentioned after SI's Ross Tucker reported that his radio co-host Jim Miller heard that Booty was ahead of Rosenfels coming out of OTAs.

NFL - QB Brett Favre disappointed he turned down Minnesota

Source: Peter King - SI.com

Peter King, of SI.com, reports former NFL QB Brett Favre (Jets) showed disappointment after turning down the Minnesota Vikings' offer for a chance to play. Favre said, "I passed up the greatest chance I could have had right now, and it hurts. By saying no, I know I'm leaving an incredible opportunity on the table, and that opportunity is not coming back." Favre added, "I really believe this is it. I truly, truly believe it's over. But if someone calls Nov. 1, who knows?"

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gotta love leaving the door open at the end with the "November 1" line.

MIN - Childress on QB Brett Favre: 'There's not a chance'

Source: Tom Pelissero - the Green Bay Press-Gazette

Tom Pelissero, of the Green Bay Press-Gazette, reports that Vikings head coach Brad Childress said "You know what? There's not a chance from my standpoint" when asked if there would be a chance of Favre playing in Minnesota if he changed his mind about being retired.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

How much does Childress wish he had said that months ago?

DET - Schwartz says QB competition wide open

Source: Tom Kowalski - MLive.com

Tom Kowalski, of MLive.com, reports Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said the quarterback competition heading into training camp is wide open.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He said QBs Daunte Culpepper, Matthew Stafford and Drew Stanton will receive equal reps at the start of camp. Schwartz said there is no timetable to announce a starter, but would like to do it sometime around the final preseason game. He did not rule out making a decision earlier in camp. Even if Culpepper wins the job to start the season, the Lions could replace him after the bye week if they feel the season is lost.

CLE - WR Braylon Edwards fails physical

Source: Tony Grossi - the Cleveland Plain Dealer

Updating a previous report, Tony Grossi, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports Cleveland Browns WR Braylon Edwards (undisclosed) failed his physical after reporting to training camp, according to league sources.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The team will not say what the injury is, but a source says Edwards injured his ankle while playing basketball. He is currently on the Non-Football Injury list. A rough way for Edwards to start what he hopes is his comeback season.

BAL - RB Willis McGahee misses practice Wednesday

Source: Jamison Hensley - The Baltimore Sun

Jamison Hensley, of The Baltimore Sun, reports Baltimore Ravens RB Willis McGahee (knee, ankle) did not participate in practice Wednesday, July 29.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It does appear McGahee will come off the Physically Unable to Perform list shortly. He did some running on the sidelines during practice. Coach Harbaugh has been impressed with McGahee's conditioning this offseason as the RB tries to bounce back from two different surgeries. "It looks like he's done a good job," Harbaugh said.

OAK - QB Jeff Garcia plans to push, support QB JaMarcus Russell

Source: Jerry McDonald - ANG Newspapers

Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports Oakland Raiders QB Jeff Garcia said he is going to support starting QB JaMarcus Russell and 'push him as much as possible as far as being the best player he can be for the team.' Garcia said he isn't there to coach Russell. 'He has a coach, his coach is Paul Hackett,' Garcia said. 'I'm here to be support and add strength to the position, however that may be,' Garcia noted. He also went on to say there isn't a player on the team that is OK with not being a starter.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

When you sign Jeff Garcia this is what you're going to get. He feels like he can still start in this league, and will do everything he can to win the job. In the event that he has to be a backup he will continue to push and mentor the player in front of him. Garcia is a fierce competitor, and is never known to be one to hold his tongue. Unless there is a complete breakdown by Russell he should be the starter all season long.

TB - Battle at quarterback about to begin

Source: Anwar Richardson - The Tampa Tribune

Anwar Richardson, of The Tampa Tribune, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers QBs Luke McCown and Byron Leftwich are the leading contenders to be the team's starting quarterback, but head coach Raheem Morris is not ruling out going with rookie QB Josh Freeman. McCown and Leftwich not only need to practice well, but they'll need to also stand out during preseason games.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Like the Cleveland QB battle, the winner of this one may be based more on who is not the worst, instead of who is best.

TB - WR Antonio Bryant and WR Michael Clayton likely locked in as starting WRs

Source: Anwar Richardson - The Tampa Tribune

Anwar Richardson, of The Tampa Tribune, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers WRs Antonio Bryant and Michael Clayton will enter training camp as the team's starting receivers. There will, however, be a heated battle for the No. 3 receiver position. WR Brian Clark seems to have an early grasp on the job, but he has to hold off Maurice Stovall for the job.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is why the Bucs have been linked to Joe Horn, who has been out of football since 2007.

NE - QB Kevin O'Connell could have inside track on No. 2 QB job

Source: Associated Press

The Associated Press reports New England Patriots QB Kevin O'Connell could have the inside track to become the team's No. 2 quarterback.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Patriots have been very impressed with Kevin O'Connell so far in his young pro career. He is a big, strong quarterback that can make plays on the run. Because of his size he is hard to bring down, and he does a good job of keeping his eyes downfield when he has to scramble. Matt Gutierrez and Brian Hoyer will battle for the #3 job.

DEN - McDaniels: QBs are quick learners

Source: Mike Chambers - the Denver Post

Mike Chambers, of the Denver Post, reports that Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels is impressed with "information flow" and "recall" of QBs Kyle Orton and Chris Simms. McDaniels said, "There is nothing we're saying to them in the meeting room or on the field that's foreign to them. That's comforting, but it still means they have to go out and execute when there's a defense and a different look, disguising, and (running) everything and at full speed."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's the first step in a beautiful marriage between player and system. If Orton can really take to the McDaniels offense, there's no reason he can't be a top 15 fantasy QB this year. He showed the skills last year at Chicago pre-ankle injury. We'll have our own Cecil Lammey at Dove Valley to report on the progress of Orton and Simms.

PHI - RB Brian Westbrook's ankle looks strong

Source: Bob Brookover - the Philadelphia Inquirer

Bob Brookover, of the Philadelphia Inquirer, reports the Eagles RB Brian Westbrook's surgically repaired right ankle looked strong in drills performed with a soccer ball.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

So far, so good. It looks like getting Westbrook at the bottom of his ADP decline after the news of the ankle surgery became public was the shark move, but we would still recommend drafting LeSean McCoy around the 10th in any leagues that you take Westbrook early.

DEN - WR Brandon Marshall misses practice Wednesday

Source: Mike Chambers - The Denver Post

Mike Chambers, of The Denver Post, reports Denver Broncos WR Brandon Marshall (hip) did not participate in any drills during practice Wednesday, July 29.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Marshall won't start practicing again until he feels better. Right now he's experiencing soreness, and the Broncos are going to be careful not to bring him back too quickly.

NYJ - RB Thomas Jones will not have deal re-worked

Source: Roderick Boone - Newsday

Roderick Boone, of Newsday, reports the New York Jets will not re-work the contract of RB Thomas Jones, according to a source.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jones has no leverage in this situation because the Jets drafted RB Shonn Greene. Jones has already collected $13.1 million in the first two seasons of the frontloaded contract the Jets handed him a couple of years ago.

CHI - ILB Brian Urlacher calls QB Jay Cutler a bad word?

Source: Vaughn McClure - the Chicago Tribune

Vaughn McClure, of the Chicago Tribune, reports that Minnesota WR Bobby Wade said that Chicago LB Brian Urlacher called new Bears QB Jay Cutler "soft, but only in harsher terms" in an interview with KFAN.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wade is trying to create dissension among the ranks in the Bears, and it probably won't work, but it's worth a shot. Maybe Wade was missing the distraction around his own team now that Brett Favre has re-re-re-retired, and he felt the need to create one for a division rival.

BUF - WR Terrell Owens' arrival won't diminish WR Josh Reed's importance

Source: Kevin Oklobzija - the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle

Kevin Oklobzija, of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, reports that Buffalo WR Josh Reed will move back to the slot this year, "a spot that best suits his well-rounded skill set". Oklobzija writes that Reed should get open underneath a lot if Terrell Owens and Lee Evans are running downfield routes, and Reed's excellent blocking ability will continue to be harnessed.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Reed could be a 50-60 catch receiver if the Bills really do commit to run no huddle almost half of the time, and if they make the three wide set their prevalent offensive formation, then Reed could be a viable WR4/WR4 in PPR leagues.

DAL - QB Tony Romo taking leadership role

Source: Todd Archer - the Dallas Morning News

Todd Archer, of the Dallas Morning News, reports that QB Tony Romo has taken a leadership role on the Cowboys this offseason. Head coach Wade Phillips compared Romo to Jim Kelly and John Elway, saying Romo is "similar in that he was at every workout during the offseason, and the rest of the players look at that, and if you have anybody slacking off during the offseason you can go to them and say, 'Look, Tony Romo is out there working; you need to be working.' That really helps with your football team."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This sounds like offseason fluff, but at least it addresses the main concern about Romo, his ability to lead the team.

OAK - No plans on adding QB Michael Vick

Source: Jerry McDonald - ANG Newspapers

Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports Oakland Raiders head coach Tom Cable said the team has no plans to add unrestricted free-agent QB Michael Vick (Falcons).

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Raiders would seem like a perfect landing spot for Michael Vick, but apparently the team is happy with JaMarcus Russell and Jeff Garcia.

BAL - TE L.J. Smith misses morning practice Wednesday

Source: Edward Lee - The Baltimore Sun

Edward Lee, of The Baltimore Sun, reports Baltimore Ravens TE L.J. Smith (hamstring) did not participate in morning practice Wednesday, July 29, because of a minor hamstring injury. Smith said the injury is not considered serious.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He is not sure if he will be able to take part in the first full-team practice Friday, July 31. L.J. Smith has been injury prone for a few years now so this isn't the greatest news before August. Hopefully he'll be able to bounce back quickly because the team will be relying on he and Todd Heap more than ever because of the lack of depth at the WR position.

WAS - Zorn says team not interested in QB Michael Vick at this juncture

Source: Associated Press

The Associated Press reports Washington Redskins head coach Jim Zorn said the team is not interested in signing unrestricted free-agent QB Michael Vick at this juncture.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Since when did Zorn go the way of Dana Carvey? At this juncture? If breaks off a "thousand points of light" or "Michael Vick - bad, he's bad" take I'll fall out of my chair laughing. In all seriousness, the Redskins could reconsider in a heartbeat. Right now it sounds like the Patriots or Steelers could be possible destinations for Michael Vick.

NYJ - RB Leon Washington's agent scheduled to meet with Tannenbaum

Source: Rich Cimini - the New York Daily News

Rich Cimini, of the New York Daily News, reports Alvin Keels, agent for New York Jets RB Leon Washington, is scheduled to meet face-to-face with Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum Wednesday, July 29, to continue discussions about a new deal for Washington.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Washington is only set to make $535,000 this season, and the Jets know that he's the only back on their roster that is capable of being the change of pace weapon their offense needs. The Jets want to have a run-heavy offense, and Washington is a key piece to their offense. A deal should get done sooner rather than later.

NFL - WR Plaxico Burress testifies in front of grand jury

Source: ESPN.com

ESPN.com reports unrestricted free-agent WR Plaxico Burress (Giants) testified before a grand jury for three hours Wednesday, July 29, in his felony gun possession case.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

He said he was truthful in his testimony and is remorseful for what he has done. Benjamin Brafman, Burress' attorney, said that Burress stressed in his testimony that the gun was not used in the commission of a crime and that the lone victim was his client. Burress will now wait for the grand jury to vote to find out if he will be indicted.

BAL - QB Troy Smith seeing time at receiver

Source: Mike Preston - The Baltimore Sun

Mike Preston, of The Baltimore Sun, reports Baltimore Ravens QB Troy Smith has been seeing a lot of reps at wide receiver during practices.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Ravens have a shortage of receivers so Smith is filling in, getting some reps with the wideouts. Smith has been impressive and because of his athletic ability could see a dual QB/WR role in 2009.

JAX - Not interested in QB Michael Vick

Source: Michael C. Wright - The Florida Times-Union

Michael C. Wright, of The Florida Times-Union, reports free-agent QB Michael Vick's (Falcons) name has not come up once during any of the Jacksonville Jaguars' personnel meetings, according to people inside the organization.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Head coach Jack Del Rio also said via text message that the team had no interest in Vick. The two teams that keep coming up in rumors about Vick are New England and Pittsburgh. With their championships and history they could certainly absorb the PR hit that is sure to come when Vick signs with a new team.

BAL - WR Derrick Mason placed on reserve-did not report list

Source: Jamison Hensley - The Baltimore Sun

Jamison Hensley, of The Baltimore Sun, reports the Baltimore Ravens have officially placed retired WR Derrick Mason on the reserve-did not report list.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This means that while Mason makes up his mind about retirement he won't count against the 80 man roster for training camp. If he decides to come back the Ravens could then activate him and cut another player to make room for him.

PHI - TE Cornelius Ingram impressing early at camp

Source: PhiladelphiaEagles.com

PhiladelphiaEagles.com is reporting Cornelius Ingram, who has been on the field these first two days of practice at Lehigh University, provides goosebump moments. He is a man at 6 feet 4, 245 pounds. He runs well, and is so big and physical that you can imagine the things the Eagles might be able to do with him. "I know that this is just the beginning. I feel great and I think I'm going to have a lot of opportunities to get better," said Ingram, a fifth-round pick from Florida who missed all of last season with the Gators after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in practice. "My goal is to keep improving every single day and if I do that, I'll be where I want to be."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ingram is excited to get back on the football field after missing all of last season due to a knee injury. He reminds many in the scouting community of Dallas Clark or Vernon Davis because of his great athletic ability. The Eagles have another dangerous weapon for their passing game, and Ingram creates mismatches every time he's on the field because he's too fast for linebackers to cover and too big for safeties to cover.

MIN - QB Sage Rosenfels moving on

Source: ESPN.com

ESPN.com reports Minnesota Vikings QB Sage Rosenfels said he has no hard feelings towards the team for attempting to lure free-agent QB Brett Favre (Jets). As far as Rosenfels is concerned, he is owed no explanations. 'I don't think it's necessary because I understand the situation,' Rosenfels said, according to the Pioneer Press. 'I've been around the league long enough … I feel no animosity toward players or coaches.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rosenfels has been around the league a long time, so of course he's going to react this way. Anything else will be seen as whining and he's been around long enough to know his place in the pecking order.

TB - Battle at kicker about to begin

Source: Anwar Richardson - The Tampa Tribune

Anwar Richardson, of The Tampa Tribune, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers PKs Matt Bryant and Mike Nugent will battle for the team's kicker duties during training camp. Bryant has been with the team since 2005, but he struggled with longer kicks last year when he hit went just 5-for-11 on kicks from 40 yards or longer.
