Hi Folks,

Welcome to the weekend. It's that really dead time of the year before training camps open in a couple of weeks but there are still a few stories you'll want to keep up with. Let's get to it.

GB - Packers Would Allow QB Favre To Return As Backup

Source: Journal Sentinel staff, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

The Green Bay Packers' general manager and coach don't plan to grant Brett Favre's request for his release. If he does rejoin the team, they told The Associated Press this morning, it won't be as the starting quarterback. A trade may be the best resolution, but Thompson and McCarthy declined to discuss that possibility. Thompson said he had not received any inquiries from other teams as of Saturday morning.

This will be fascinating to watch the gamesmanship on this one. There is zero chance Favre ever accepts a backup role in Green Bay. So Thompson trying to use that in trade negotiation is laughable. On the flip side, he'll be a huge upgrade to many teams out there so they'll have to be serious when it comes to what they're offering. Stay tuned.

NYJ - Jets Hoping Clemens Wins QB Job?

Source: Mark Cannizzaro, New York Post

New York Jets beat writer Mark Cannizzaro speculates that the Jets are secretly hoping that QB Kellen Clemens beats out former started Chad Pennington to be the starting QB. Pennington lost his starting job to Clemens last season.

This makes sense as the Jets likely feel like they've hit a ceiling with Pennington. They know what he can do and he'll manage the game but he's not a guy that really can carry a team. Clemens has the upside of the bigger arm and the always dangerous "potential". On the flip side, Pennington is a guy that normally won't lose the game for you. We don't know if that's the case for Clemens yet.

JAC - WR Jones Father Denies Drugs Were Jones'

Source: Michael C. Wright, Florida Times-Union

Matt Jones' father, Steve Jones, issued a statement to KNWA-TV in Fayetteville, Ark., in which the receiver denied having any responsibility for the six grams of cocaine that were found in a sport-utility vehicle and ultimately led to his arrest early Thursday morning.

"Matt is anxious to make a statement and wants to make a statement," said the statement issued to the television station. "His attorney has advised him to not say anything until they have had a chance to speak together. They will release a statement at the appropriate time.

"We want to make it clear that Matt was not in possession of any drugs," the statement continued, "but that there were drugs in the vehicle and were located in the closest proximity to Matt. He does not claim any responsibility for the drugs."

Jones isn't the first defendant to use the "the drugs weren't mine" defense. We'll see how this plays out.

MIN - Some Veterans Don't Think Favre Would Fit With Vikings

Source: Sean Jensen, Pioneer Press

Minnesota Pro Bowl defensive tackle Pat Williams said he has full confidence in the development of Tarvaris Jackson as the Vikings' quarterback.

"I love my team," Williams said Friday. "I will ride it out with T-Jack. He's been with us, and he's made progress this offseason."

Receiver Bobby Wade said the current crop of players has a "feel for each other."

"I think we have the makings of a championship team," Wade said. "I wouldn't trade Brett Favre for anybody on our roster right now."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Minnesota has been a team you hear a good bit about as a place Favre might land. But it does seem that some of the Vikings veterans have plenty of faith in Tarvaris Jackson. This makes some sense and I know raving about Jackson's improvement is the hot thing to talk about. But I still have a hard time thinking that Favre wouldn't be a massive upgrade there for the Vikings. We'll see.

DEF - LB Thurman In Trouble Again

Source: Holly Abrams, Sandusky Register

Former Bengal LB Odell Thurman has been indicted and police are seeking his arrest for a charge of felony assault. The incident occurred at an Ohio water park resort when Thurman punched a man, breaking his jaw, while arguing over a spot in line. Thurman has been suspended indefinitely by the NFL.

Shocker there...
