Sports Fourteen of the NFL's 32 teams have at least $10 million of the $109-million salary cap available, according to figures from the NFL Players Association. And of those 14, seven have at least $15 million in cap space. "There's no way to eat up all the money that's out there this year," said one agent. "Teams are going to do everything they can to sign their young guys to long-term deals, but it still isn't going to be enough. When teams start to roll over money to next year, it's going to be unreal what some guys are going to get." [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Sounds like good news for some players out there. The Jets are on that list and New England almost made it. You can bet Pete Kendall in New York and Asante Samuel in New England are taking notice... MIA - QB Culpepper's Hearing Delayed Again Source: Len Pasquarelli, ESPN.com The grievance hearing for disgruntled Miami Dolphins quarterback Daunte Culpepper has been pushed back again, and the latest delay could jeopardize the plans of the eight-year veteran to have a new employer by the start of training camps. The new date, agreed upon late Friday night, is July 18, and the hearing will be held at an undisclosed South Florida vacation. The hearing, previously scheduled for Friday, had already been postponed once, when arbitrator John Feerick encountered travel problems. The new hearing date is just 7-10 days before most teams are scheduled to report to camp. The Jacksonville Jaguars, believed to have demonstrated the most interest in Culpepper, have their initial camp practices on July 28.[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] As we said yesterday, the clock is ticking for Culpepper. With camp fast approaching, every day this is delayed hurts Culpepper. It seems unreal that they can't find a date to get together prior to July 18. Earl Campbell Says Upshaw 'Should Be Ashamed' Source: AP A self-described "country boy," Earl Campbell remains thankful that he let his wife handle his finances. "That's why we've still got something," he said. But some players don't have much left. They should be taken care of, Campbell said. "If I was good enough for them to yell for (on Sunday), I should be good enough for them to say 'Earl, here's you a check every month for what you've done," he said. "They need to do more for ex-athletes." Upshaw has stressed he works for current players, not retirees. He has also noted he helped form a program that provides up to $88,000 per year to families of former players suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's disease. "(He) should be ashamed," Campbell said. "He played the game and he knows."[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Campbell is one of the latest voices to join the chorus here. He says much of his condition is likely due to genetic issues but he's still a powerful voice. We'll see how this plays out here soon. DEF - GB - Packers LB Barnett's Case Assigned Special Prosecutor Source: Dan Wilson, Post-Crescent Green Bay Packers linebacker Nick Barnett's bar-fight case is being assigned a special prosecutor to handle a possible battery case against Barnett. Outagamie County District Attorney Carrie Schneider said Friday she would appoint a special prosecutor because her husband could be a potential witness and the potential conflicts make it necessary. Schneider said she hopes to know who that will be by Monday. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Just keeping you posted on this one. DEF - CLE - Browns CB Wright Focused Source: Jeff Walcoff, ClevelandBrowns.com Cleveland Browns rookie cornerback Eric Wright said he's "taking it day-by-day" and not gazing too far into the future, but he is surely aiming to be the starter on opening day. "(The starting job) is extremely important to me because I'm a competitor," he said. "It's wide open and I'm looking to compete for a starting job. I want it to take less time than more time but I'm taking it day by day and meeting by meeting and we'll take it from there," said Wright. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Wright is a guy for you IDP owners to keep an eye on. You can pretty much count on QBs testing the rookie if he earns the starting job and that means opportunities. DEF - DAL - Cowboys Could Have Interest in DT Johnson? Source: Randy Galloway, Fort Worth Star-Telegram Randy Galloway, of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, believes the Dallas Cowboys could have an interest in recently waived defensive tackle Tank Johnson. According to Galloway, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has never been one to worry about character issues and Johnson would present a low-cost, high-reward opportunity. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] I've always loved the quote often attributed to former Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson - "I'd sign Charles Manson if he could run a 4.3 forty". That's less true today than it was back then but still, there will be teams that roll the dice with Tank Johnson. The Cowboys could well be one of them. I'd imagine though that any team will wait to see how his latest brush with the law plays out and if there are any further actions taken by the league towards Johnson. DEF - SF - CB Clements Contract Details Source: Matt Maiocco, Press Democrat The 49ers spent big money to sign CB Nate Clements, though not nearly as big as the previously reported eight-year, $80 million contract. The deal is actually seven years for $64 million - still not chump change. Clements is expected to be the team's top cornerback. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] What's $16 million either way? It's still a big deal for Clements and the expectations for him will be very high. This also may affect Asante Samuel in New England who many feel had been basing his negotiations on Clements' contract. DEF - ATL - CB Hall Intends To Play Out Contract Source: Jason Cole, Yahoo! Sports Falcons CB DeAngelo Hall said that he plans to play out his remaining two years in hopes of hitting free agency after the 2008 season. "Yeah, I could think about an extension, but I think I want to wait and see what the market is going to be like. I'm in a good situation where I can wait," said Hall. He is scheduled to make $3.1 million in base salary this season and at least that much in 2008. The market for Hall could easily be $25-$30 million in guaranteed money alone after the 2008 season. Atlanta could also franchise Hall, but he seemed unconcerned about the long term. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] With as much turmoil as Mike Vick's been causing for the Falcons, it's good to see Hall take the calming route here. He's going to go out and play and let his play do his salary negotiating for him. What a concept... That'll do it for today, Folks. Have a great Sunday and we'll see you tomorrow with the update.
