STL - OT Pace Returning To Form

Source: Len Pasquarelli, ESPN

Rams OT Orlando Pace was cleared to practice in minicamp and was not limited at all during the three days of practice. While he still has some rehabilitation work remaining, Pace is on schedule to be ready for the start of training camp in July. "It's getting there," said Pace. "It's a bad injury, especially at a position where you have to extend [your arms] so much, to lock out on pass-rushers. But the progress has been steady, we haven't pushed it, and the signs are all positive. I think I'll be ready to go."

Great news for Pace and for Marc Bulger and the rest of the offense. The team needs a healthy Orlando Pace handling the left side of the line. So far so good.

STL - WR Holt On The Mend

Source: Jim Thomas, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Rams WR Torry Holt underwent surgery in February for a torn meniscus cartilage in his right knee. The Rams' full-squad minicamp marked his first extensive work on the practice field since the surgery. "For the most part, things are on schedule," Holt said. "I've got one more month to heal up and really strengthen it before we start training camp. So I'm going to try to take full advantage of it. I still have some soreness on the inside where I had the meniscus cleaned up," Holt said. "But that's going to be there. It's just a matter of me getting more reps and running more, and reintroducing the knee to those types of cuts that I'm used to doing.

"I'm just trying to refocus on what's important, and that's football — trying to help this football team and this organization win some more championships," Holt said. "I'm just kind of taking a step back from the 'quote-unquote' limelight, and really putting a great deal of emphasis on football."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Holt is definitely saying all the right things. He was quick to dismiss comparisons to the Rams of a few years ago and the Greatest Show On Turf saying this new team has a lot to prove. But they're talented and look to be in a great position.

JAX - Jags WR Starting Spots Wide-Open

Source: Vito Stellino, Florida Times-Union

Jacksonville Jaguars hHC Jack Del Rio apparently is not happy with the limited participation of WRs Matt Jones and Reggie Williams, his starters from a year ago, saying "Well, they don't stand at the front of the line" when asked where they currently stand. "It's wide open," Del Rio said. "The guy who's really stepped up and really put himself into the picture is Charles Sharon. He's a guy who's earned his opportunity and look in camp." Sharon was an undrafted free agent a year ago.

"Where a guy was drafted, how a guy was brought in here, doesn't really matter at this point," Del Rio said.

Although Williams and Jones practiced Thursday, they were injured much of the offseason and Del Rio made it obvious they have to stay healthy to win jobs.

"It's really difficult to improve as a football player if you're not taking reps," he said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Del Rio isn't mincing any words here. File Charles Sharon away as a guy that you'll want to keep an eye on. We certainly will.

NO - Saints Release WR/KR/PR Michael Lewis

Source: Monroe News Star

The Saints released fan favorite WR Michael Lewis. Beerman departs as the club's all-time leader in kickoff returns (243 for 5,903 yards) and punt returns (142 for 1,482 yards).

Said Coach Sean Payton: "Both Michael and Willie (Whitehead who was also released) made big contributions to our success last year and we hope they have successful futures in the NFL. They are quality people who have proven that hard work and dedication can get you just as far as reputation or pure talent. We have the utmost respect for them as individuals and players."

First Joe Horn and now Michael Lewis. It's a tough business and sometimes fan favorites are cut loose.

NYG - Giants LT Starter Becoming Clear

Source: Mike Garofolo, Newark Star-Ledger

The battle for the starting LT spot for the New York Giants is becoming a blowout. OT Guy Whimper has struggled the last two days with backup defensive linemen. This would mean OG David Diehl would start at LT instead of LG, which would create another hole.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Giants OL is like one of those puzzles where you slide the different pieces around. Filling one spot means another is open. Although I'll open up a guard slot if that means filling the left tackle with the guy I want.

WAS - Redskins Want To Sign TE Cooley Long-Term

Source: Jason La Confora, Washington Post

Washington Redskins HC Joe Gibbs was asked today about initial talks with TE Chris Cooley on an extension. Gibbs said he "would love" to have Cooley signed long-term by training camp and the team will work hard to get that done. They have only had some preliminary discussions.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're fans of Chris Cooley. Currently, he's our #7 TE on the board. You can see all our projections for TEs here http://subscribers.footballguys.com/2007/currentproj-te.php

GB - WR Freeman Signs With Packers, Retires

Source: Associated Press

Former Green Bay Packers receiver Antonio Freeman has re-signed with the NFL team so he can retire as a Packer.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

In eight seasons in Green Bay, Freeman caught 431 passes, fifth most all-time by a Packers player. It's a nice move to let him come back with a one day contract so he could retire as a Packer. Best wishes to him in whatever he takes on next.

CLE - Browns QB Situation Foggy

Source: Patrick McManamon, Akron Beacon Journal

Browns QB Charlie Frye seems to be trying too hard and Brady Quinn has struggled, while Derek Anderson has stood tall in the pocket and gotten rid of the ball. Anderson seems most comfortable in the system put in by new OC Rob Chudzinski. "He's in the competition," HC Romeo Crennel said of Anderson. "We'll see how it plays out." Crennel indicated that when training camp opens, Frye, Anderson, Quinn and Ken Dorsey will continue to share time.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

For what it's worth, I'm starting to hear a lot of positive buzz about Derek Anderson. Frye and Quinn had been getting all the hype but Anderson continues to plug away and look good. But it truly is a foggy situation right now. If I had to guess, I'd say it'll be Frye to open the season with Quinn taking over about mid season. But much of that depends on how quickly Quinn can get a contract nailed down and into camp.

PIT - HC Tomlin Names Prospective Starters

Source: Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Steelers HC Mike Tomlin penciled in starters at several contested positions when he ended the Steelers' spring practices yesterday. Chukky Okobi will open training camp with the first team at center over Sean Mahan; Deshea Townsend over Bryant McFadden at right cornerback; Ryan Clark over Anthony Smith at free safety; and Max Starks at right tackle over Willie Colon.

Tomlin stressed it was written in pencil and not ink.

"You define guys on how they play this game when they play it in pads," Tomlin said. "I like what I saw out there, but I am not making decisions on what I saw in this offseason."

Coach Tomlin is making his mark on the team as they prepare for training camp.

RB Chris Brown Closer To Decision

Source: Jessica Hopp, Nashville Tennessean

The agent for RB Chris Brown says his client is "getting closer to closing a deal" with either the Titans or Bears. Brown's agent said the offers are very similar. "There's good possibilities for both sides," Silberman said. "Chris could go to Chicago. It's his hometown; he has family there; he's comfortable there; and there is a possibility they very easily could make another championship run. With Jones gone, Chris could see himself in the role Jones had last year. On the other hand, he could come back to Tennessee where he has a good relationship with Coach (Jeff) Fisher; he knows the system; and he could potentially compete for the starting job. That's compelling, too."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

I wonder how Cedric Benson feels about Brown's agent suggesting that Brown might take Thomas Jones' role? I think Benson has in mind taking that himself. He has to wonder a little bit about Tennessee though as Fisher played a maddening game of "running back musical chairs last year. Stay tuned.

OAK - Union Complaints Prmompt Cancellation Of Workouts

Source: AP - Yahoo

The Oakland Raiders canceled the final week of their offseason training program Friday after complaints from the NFL players' union about the intensity of the practices.

In a brief statement, coach Lane Kiffin said the players' union believes the Raiders' offseason program violated league rules on practice standards.

"The union has complained about the high level of intensity, player aggressiveness and fast pace of our practices and, as a result, has taken away the final week of our offseason program," said Kiffin, the NFL's youngest and least experienced head coach.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Not a big deal here. The Raiders have had spirited practices and are finally showing a semblance of a pulse. I think they'll gladly trade a few missed days for the excitement they've generated.

DEF - IND - DT Simon To Be Released

Source: Mike Chappell, Indianapolis Star

The Colts are expected to cut veteran DT Corey Simon. Simon was not invited to attend the team's Super Bowl ring ceremony on Wednesday.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Given the contentious contract situation between The Colts and Simon, it's not all that surprising that Simon wasn't invited to the Super Bowl ring ceremony. He didn't play in any games last season and it's looking like he won't play any this year for Indianapolis.

DEF - WAS - Rookie S Landry Injures Groin

Source: Gary Fitzgerald, Redskins.com

Redskins rookie S LaRon Landry is sitting out Friday's mini-camp practice with a groin injury. It is uncertain if Landry will be available to participate in any of the practices during the three-day mini-camp. Landry sustained the injury earlier this week.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

I'd expect the Redskins to take it easy with Landry here and make sure he's ready for training camp. We'll watch this one for you.

DEF - WAS - Groin Injury From Paintball Sidelines Rookie Landry

Source: AP - Yahoo

A paintball shot in the groin left rookie LaRon Landry unable to practice when the Washington Redskins opened their minicamp Friday.

The No. 6 overall pick in this year's draft was injured during a team-building outing Wednesday, when coach Joe Gibbs allowed the players to leave early at the end of the voluntary spring workouts. Some players went bowling or had lunch together, while many of the defensive players went to play paintball.

"I didn't know paintball was that dangerous," linebacker Marcus Washington said. "I hope it wasn't friendly fire."
