DEF - NE - CB Samuel Close To Returning KC - QB Huard's Injury Could Cost Him Chance For Job Source: Adam Teicher, Kansas City Star Damon Huard's last chance to win the Chiefs' starting quarterback spot may have disappeared Tuesday when he again failed to practice because of a sore calf muscle. Huard also didn't practice Monday. His absences and the injury threaten his ability to play in Thursday night's game against New Orleans at Arrowhead Stadium. "He's hurting," coach Herm Edwards said. "We'll see where he's at between now and Thursday. If he can't push off and throw, he probably won't play." Croyle will start against New Orleans and play most, if not all, of the first half and then perhaps into the third quarter. A good showing could cement his spot as the starter. "If I go out there and have a good game and put some points on the board, then it's going to be interesting," Croyle said. "If I don't, then they might feel I'm not ready to go."[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The last two paragraphs are telling. Croyle did not have a good game Thursday night. He actually had some stretches where he looked awful. Basically, he did nothing to seize the job Thursday night. NYJ - WAS - OL Kendall Gets Traded To Washington Source: Jason La Confora, Washington Post The Washington Redskins have acquired guard Pete Kendall from the New York Jets to fill their void at left guard, according to sources with knowledge of the situation. Kendall must still pass a physical, but he looks to be the answer to the Redskins woes on the OL. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] This is a nice plus for Washington. And I still have to believe the Jets are making a mistake to let what looks like personal differences and pride cost them a solid offensive lineman. Kendall was the veteran presence between two outstanding young lineman in tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson and center Nick Mangold. He'll hopefully bring some experience and leadership to the Redskins line. IND - WR Harrison Returns To Practice Source: Associated Press, Sports Illustrated Indianapolis Colts WR Marvin Harrison returned to practice Thursday after tending to personal matters Wednesday. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] No worries here. Just letting you Harrison owners not to sweat him missing practice Wednesday. GB - WR Driver Suffers Apparent Ankle Injury Source: Fox TV Green Bay Packers WR Donald Driver suffered an apparent injury to his right ankle Thursday during a preseason game against the Jaguars. Driver could not support his weight and was assisted to the sidelines . He was ultimately carted off to the Green Bay locker room. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The Green Bay offense had been clicking finally and the last thing the Packers need is to lose Donald Driver for any amount of time. We should know more Friday. QB Manning Gives Endorsement Of RB Addai Source: John Oehser, Colts.com Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning said on Wednesday that he believed RB Joseph Addai – the only NFL rookie to rush for more than 1,000 yards last season – was very much ready to be the team's feature running back, even if it means carrying the load for much of the season. Manning said Addai appears ready for the larger workload. "Edgerrin (James), for a lack of a better term, was a freak of nature from that standpoint," Manning said. "I remember asking him, 'Are you all right? Are you tired?' Edgerrin could handle that. I think Joe wants that responsibility. He trained hard this off-season. "We're going to let him accept that challenge." Manning said Wednesday while depth "is crucial in the NFL, I don't think you say, 'two backs' as much as you say, 'Who are the backs?'" "I think when you have a guy like Joseph on the field as your starting back, you have to ask yourselves, 'Are we as good with him off the field as not off the field?"' Manning said.[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Addai isn't Edgerrin James. But he still could be very very good this year. We covered some very similar comments from Manning on Addai earlier this week. Bottom line is that Joseph Addai looks to have cleared the biggest hurdle all players face: Playing Time. Now the question turns to what he does with that time. His Average Draft Position is awfully high so you're probably not going to steal Addai. But there's a good chance we feel that he'll live up to his #5-7 RB ranking where we see him being drafted.CLE - Browns RB Lewis Healthier & Faster Source: Jim Corbett, USA Today Cleveland Browns RB Jamal Lewis appears to be healthier, faster and happier this season, which could lead to positive results. He has shed 12 pounds from his 5-11 frame this offseason and now weighs in at 238 pounds. "I'm happy playing football again," says Lewis, who turns 28 on Aug. 26. "They're building this thing around me to the point where I feel comfortable and happy again playing football." [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] This is the typical sort of optimistic article you see in August. I've followed Jamal Lewis since he was running over linebackers as a Tennessee Vol and I want to see this translate into burst on the field. So far this year, I haven't seen it. He's still chopping his steps like he did in Baltimore and just seems like he's lost the pop that used to be such a big part of his game. DET - Lions QB Kitna Will Be a Game-Time Decision Source: Yahoo Sports The status of Detroit Lions QB Jon Kitna for he Lions' third preseason game remained uncertain Thursday, and will continue to be until gameday. OC Mike Martz said the Lions will wait until Saturday afternoon to decide whether the starter will play that night at Indianapolis. Kitna left Tuesday's practice with back spasms and has not taken part in drills since. QB J.T O'Sullivan would get the start and would play much of the game if Kitna cannot go. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] It's never good for a player to miss time but I'm still not too worried here. Kitna needs the reps with his WRs, especially Calvin Johnson, but it's not that big of a deal if he misses this game to us. CIN - Bengals LT Jones Practices; Others Still Out Source: Geoff Hobson, Bengals.com Cincinnati Bengals LT Levi Jones was back at practice again today. RB Quincy Wilson (ribs) was back at practice for the first time this week. Meanwhile, DE Robert Geathers rested his bruised ribs. CBs Deltha O'Neal and Brandon Williams, as well as WR Antonio Chatman and S Herana-Daze Jones, didn't work. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] QB Carson Palmer spoke last week about instability on the offensive line but having Jones back will help a lot. Let's keep our fingers crossed he stays healthy. NYG - Giants Thursday Injury Update Source: Mike Garafolo, Newark Star-Ledger Several New York Giants missed practice Thursday morning. TE Jeremy Shockey (hamstring) did not go and probably won't play against the Jets on Saturday, according to HC Tom Coughlin said. Others who didn't practice were: RB Derrick Ward (ankle), S Will Demps (elbow), CB Sam Madison (hamstring), P Jeff Feagles (back), OL Todd Londot (ankle) and LS Ryan Kuehl (calf/Achilles). WR Plaxico Burress pulled out of practice midway through with soreness in his ankle, but he is expected to play this weekend. WRs Amani Toomer (ankle) and Sinorice Moss (ankle) and QB Jared Lorenzen (concussion) were back in action. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] TE Jeremy Shockey and WR Plaxico Burress missing practice? There's a shocker. Shockey was downplaying his hamstring earlier in the week so that's not a big worry. But Burress' ankle is a bigger worry. It seems like something that might linger. We continue to be worried about the Giants this year. GB - WR Furrey Aggravates Knee Injury Source: Tom Kowalski, MLive.com Detroit Lions WR Mike Furrey left practice Wednesday when he aggravated his sore knee and his status for Saturday's game and beyond is unknown. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] We love Mike Furrey just because he's such a great story. And he's been a valuable part of this offense. If he can't go, Shaun McDonald likely would see more opportunity. PHI - Eagles TE Smith Unlikely To Play In Third Preseason Game Source: Associated Press, NFL.com Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid said on Wednesday that it is unlikely that tight end L.J. Smith will play during the team's preseason game on Sunday, as he continues to recover from a groin injury. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] I'll spin this in a positive light and say it's a plus that we're even talking about the possibility that Smith could play this week. When he first injured himself, we worried it might be a longer term deal. Apparently not. DEF - CHI - Bears DT Harris Status Uncertain For Saturday Source: Associated Press, CBS.Sportsline.com Although DT Tommie Harris has been practicing and will be in uniform, his status for the third preseason game remains a question mark. Harris said Thursday, "I'm ready to play; it's up to these guys if they want to do it." HC Lovie Smith added "Will Tommie play? There's a chance of that, we're not making any decision on that right now. We'll let you know later." Harris has not played since a hamstring injury in early December that required surgery. While the Bears would like to see him in a game, they're willing to wait until the opener at San Diego. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] We're not that concerned about whether he plays or not. We're just glad to see he could play if he wanted. DEF - PHI - Eagles LB Gaither Moves Into Starting MLB Role Source: Associated Press, NFL.com Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Omar Gaither has assumed the starting middle linebacker role with the team, following their release of linebacker Jeremiah Trotter earlier in the week. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Gaither's a guy that's been waiting for his opportunity and now it looks like he's making the most of it. DEF - NE - CB Samuel Close To Returning Source: Len Pasquarelli, ESPN.com Although a high-ranking New England official said late Thursday night that the team has "no indication right now" that Asante Samuel is about to end his holdout, a source close to the franchise cornerback said the four-year pro is seriously considering reporting to training camp next week so that he can be ready for the start of the regular season. But the source close to Samuel said the standout cornerback, who tied for the league lead in interceptions in 2006 with 10, has not made up his mind yet on how to proceed. And in an interview with the Boston Herald, agent Alonzo Shavers stopped short of conceding a resolution to the contract standoff is imminent. "Well, the season is about to start," Alonzo Shavers told the paper. "Of course we're getting closer. But I couldn't tell you one way or the other. It's really up to him at this point when he decides to come in. There's really no rush. What's the rush? "I'm sure he'll definitely be around in the near future," Shavers said. "I just don't want to speculate because he hasn't given me an inkling one way or another. I'm sure when he's ready, he'll tell me. He has not given me the green light, so I can't confirm or deny anything."[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] This makes sense to us. He'll sign his tender and be ready for Week 1. Just as everyone expected. That'll do it for today, Folks. Have a great Friday and we'll see you tomorrow with the update. J |
