DEF - NYG - All Things Quiet On Giants, DE Strahan Front CIN - Bengals RB Irons Tears ACL; Out For Season Source: Mark Curnutte, Cincinnati Enquirer Cincinnati Bengals rookie running back Kenny Irons has a torn left Anterior Cruciate Ligament) and is out for the entire 2007 season. He will have surgery and is expected to make a full recovery, the Bengals said in a statement today. Irons injured his knee Thursday night in the preseason opener at Detroit. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] And the history of injured Bengal RBs continues.... Tough break for Irons. We like the guy but this team is all about Rudi Johnson. We already had Rudi Johnson projected to receive well over 300 carries so this doesn't really affect him much. We bump him up just slightly. Kenny Watson is the guy that will likely see most of the work we had projected for Irons. To see how we project the entire team, click here. DET - Lions Dispute Report Regarding RB Jones Source: Nicholas J. Cotsonika, Detroit Free Press A report published today and repeated on the radio said Detroit Lions RB Kevin Jones will miss the Lions' first six regular-season games because of his foot injury. But the team says it's too early to declare that. "That is absolutely untrue," Lions spokesman Bill Keenist said today. "That's premature. No decision has been made. He continues to rehab and make good progress." The published report said the Lions had not made an official decision, but were planning to keep Jones on the physically unable to perform list heading into the regular season. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The Lions are right, it's too early to make a decision like this right now. Although we won't be surprised at all to see the Lions make this decision later. Most folks are still thinking it's about a 50-50 situation that Jones starts the season on the PUP list. He's making progress and Detroit thinks he's something special so I don't see them rushing him back. ATL - Falcons Try Mughelli As Short-Yardage RB Source: Steve Wyche, Atlanta Journal-Constitution When asked about RB Jerious Norwood's inside running ability, Atlanta Falcons HC Bobby Petrino said the following: "We need to get him the ball and watch him run between the tackles a little bit. We know how he's going to do when he gets out in the open. We'll pound it in there a little bit. We'd like to see FB Ovie Mughelli get a shot on a short-yardage carry. We're still working on him as a short-yardage guy." [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Potentially big news for you guys in TD leagues if you're looking for a guy late that might get the short TDs. There are lots of questions about how Norwood can handle the tough inside yards. It's easily conceivable that Mughelli could get this work. Stay tuned. DET - Lions WR Johnson Impressive In Preseason Debut Source: Larry Lage, Associated Press Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson showed a glimpse of what's to come from the No. 2 pick in the NFL draft. In the preseason opener vs. the Cincinnati Bengals, the 6-foot-5, 239-pound receiver displayed his speed and savvy on his first catch, sprinting and settling into a spot behind a cornerback and in front of a safety. On the next play, Johnson used his body and leaping ability to shield Bengals first-round pick CB Leon Hall for a 21-yard reception that was the second and final ball thrown to him. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] I told you I was anxious about this one and Johnson didn't disappoint. He is a monster target out there and his size allows him some matchup situations where if the ball is thrown correctly, there really isn't a way to defense the pass. Solid start for Johnson and it looks like there's plenty more to follow. NYG - Giants RB Droughns Says RB Jacobs Is Starter Source: Mike Garafolo, Newark Star-Ledger New York Giants RB Reuben Droughns has accepted Brandon Jacobs' role as No. 1 RB on the depth chart. "I understand they're going to want him to get the majority (of carries)," Droughns said. "But at the same time, whatever it takes to be on the field and help this team, I'm willing to do." When asked how he's handling Jacobs' getting most of the attention from the media every day, Droughns said, "It doesn't bother me. I've never been that guy that came anywhere and was the guy. I've always had to fight for what I had." OC Kevin Gilbride has mentioned that Droughns could be Jacobs' lead blocker in at least a few situations. Droughns also floated the possibility. "You never know, you might see both of us on the field at some point in time during the year," he said of himself and Jacobs. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Not a big stretch here to call Jacobs the starter. Although we do think Droughns will see a fair amount of work. We have Jacobs slated for 235 carries with Droughns seeing 130 carries. To see how we project the entire team, click here. MIN - Vikings Counting On QB Jackson Source: Alex Marvez, FOX Sports Minnesota Vikings HC Brad Childress isn't sure whether or not 2nd year QB Tarvaris Jackson can make the same type of leap that QB Donovan McNabb did in his second season with the Eagles, but he has enough faith that Jackson will bloom into a top-notch quarterback that the club passed on selecting QB Brady Quinn in the NFL draft and didn't add a polished veteran as a fall-back option. "It's a process," Childress said. "Shoot, I think if you talk to (Eagles HC) Andy Reid, he'll tell you it's a three- to five-year process sometimes. But I want (Jackson) to be good right away just like I wanted Donovan to be good right away." [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Jackson is a guy that is struggling for respect in this league. It looks like the Vikings are pretty committed to him though and have added a potentially elite RB to the backfield to take some pressure off him. JAX - Jaguars Sign PK Elling, Waive WR Jackson Source: Jaguars.com The Jacksonville Jaguars signed veteran free agent placekicker Aaron Elling today. The 6-2, 201-pound placekicker was waived by the Falcons on Aug. 7. In his four year career, he has played in 33 career games and has converted 19 of 28 field goals and all 50 extra points. To make room for him, they waived rookie free agent wide receiver Chris Jackson, whom they signed just yesterday. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Elling will compete with kicker Josh Scobee in Jacksonville. We think Scobee can hold onto the job but it's something we'll watch for you in camp. DEN - Broncos Promote RB Bell To 2nd String Source: Mike Klis, Denver Post Mike Bell became the No. 2 running back for the Denver Broncos on Thursday, which puts him ahead of Cecil Sapp, who had been running with the second unit. Sapp now is splitting the third-team reps with Andre Hall. Bell feels he is a much improved runner this year. "The coaches are constantly harping that I have the skills, but I have to be patient," said Bell. "This year, I'm able to understand the concept of the offense and get in the flow. A lot of it has to do with watching Travis run amok. He's done such a great job at it, it's helping me and the other backs as well." [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] This makes sense to us as we had a hard time seeing him behind Cecil Sapp. This team is all about Travis Henry though. We think this is the year he puts it all together as Denver puts the focus on Henry. NE - Patriots WR Moss, RB Maroney To Sit Vs. Bucs Source: Albert Breer, Boston Herald The New England Patriots will have WR Randy Moss and RB Laurence Maroney sit out in the Patriots preseason opener vs. the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Not a big surprise with as much time as Moss has missed. He needs to get that hamstring healthy. And do it pretty quickly. DEN - HC Shanahan Forces WR Marshall Into Action Source: Andrew Mason, DenverBroncos.com Friday morning, Denver Broncos HC Mike Shanahan told the injured WR Brandon Marshall that he would be going through the full morning's work. Saying he was "shocked and scared", Marshall complied. "He said it was just to challenge me, to see if I was mentally strong," Marshall said. "He knew that I was in pain, and that it hurt, but he also knows it's one of those things where you have to get out there, push yourself and be mentally tough." Marshall was not supposed to do a full practice, but it ended up that way. "They told me I was supposed to be done within the first 20 minutes," he said. "But it warmed up so good (I stayed in there)," Marshall said. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Sounds like Shanahan had seen enough of Marshall on the sidelines. To his credit, it looks like the troubled WR passed the test. Let's see where it goes from here. MIA - Dolphins WR Booker Has Inflammation In Knee Source: Craig Barnes, South Florida Sun-Sentinel Miami Dolphins WR Marty Booker, who missed his third consecutive practice, said his right knee is inflamed, but he doesn't expect to be out too long. "It looks like a few days, but we will have to see," Booker said. "It is just a little irritated." [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] We'll watch this one for you into next week. If he's not back on the field in a few days, then maybe we'll start to worry. PHI - TE Smith Did Not Re-Injure Sports Hernia Source: Reuben Crank, Philly Burbs Philadelphia Eagles HC Andy Reid said the injury to TE L.J. Smith is in the same area as the sports hernia that required surgery in May, but he said an exam revealed that the two injuries are actually unrelated. Smith is still facing a significant layoff. "It's too early to tell," Reid said. "We'll take it slow and see how he does. It's still pretty tender." [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] I guess one could make an argument that it's a positive Smith didn't re-injure the sports hernia. Although a new injury isn't great either. It looks like he's looking at missing a significant amount of time either way though. CLE - Coin Flip To Decide Starting QB Source: Patrick McManamon, Akron Beacon Journal The starting quarterback for Saturday's exhibition season opener against Kansas City will be determined by a coin flip between QBs Derek Anderson and Charlie Frye. HC Romeo Crennel said before the game he will have one player make the call with the coin in the air, and the winner starts. "I think that (a flip of the coin) is the fairest way to those guys because no one knows who is going to start ahead of time," Crennel said. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] This just feels wrong. Crennel is the coach. Make a call. Flip a coin in your office if you have to but act like you know what you want to do to the public and the team. KC - Chiefs QB Competition Neck-And-Neck Source: USA Today So far, there's no clear leader in the competition between Brodie Croyle and Damon Huard to become the Kansas City Chiefs' starting quarterback. "It's even. It's been good competition," coach Herm Edwards said. "Now we get into the games." Edwards said he's going to make sure both quarterbacks get a chance to work with the first team during the preseason. Croyle will get the start against Cleveland Saturday night, while Huard will start in the Chiefs' Aug. 16 game against Miami, Edwards said. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Croyle looks like he's the future. But my best guess right now is that Huard starts the season and then we see Croyle around week 6 or so. DEF - TEN - Titans Get Restraining Order To Block CB Jones Source: Chris Mortensen, ESPN Suspended NFL cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones is causing his team stress yet again. On Friday, the Tennessee Titans obtained a restraining order against Jones to prevent him from participating in a Total Nonstop Action Wrestling pay-per-view event this weekend. "In June we stated that we didn't expect to comment on Adam Jones until his suspension was complete. Regrettably, we feel it necessary to explain our action today," the Titans said in a statement. The statement said: "Today we filed a motion in Williamson County asking for a court order preventing Jones from participating in any wrestling activity," the statement read. "All NFL players have language in their contracts that prohibit them from engaging in activities 'which may involve a significant risk of personal injury.' We certainly believe wrestling to be hazardous and it is obvious from the player's conduct that he is ignoring this aspect of his agreements with the club. As an organization, we feel it is our obligation to protect our rights in this instance." [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Because I know you guys were getting anxious without an Adam Jones story in the mix.... DEF - NYG - All Things Quiet On Giants, DE Strahan Front Source: There has been absolutely no contact since the start of training camp between the New York Giants and holdout DE Michael Strahan, according to head coach Tom Coughlin. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Just keeping you up to date here. That'll do it for today, Folks. Have a great weekend and we'll see you tomorrow with the update.
