DEF - MIA - Dolphins LB Porter To Miss At Least Two Weeks CLE - Browns Agree To Terms With QB Quinn Source: Jay Glazer, FOX Sports The Cleveland Browns have agreed to terms on a five-year deal with first round pick, QB Brady Quinn. The deal is worth $20.2 million, and could reach a total value of $30 million with escalators. The contract contains $7.75 million in guaranteed money. The deal was agreed to Tuesday morning, but has not yet been signed. Quinn was en route to Cleveland to join his teammates on Tuesday. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Is missing 15 practices too much to overcome for Quinn? I think it may be. On the upside, he only has to beat out Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson. If there's a QB corps you'd want to battle, those two guys are it. Let's see how he practices and what kind of reps he sees. NYG - Retired RB Barber Says Coughlin Didn't Make Him Feel 'Respected As A Player' Source: Tiki Barber Tike Barber on his Sirius Radio show, The Barber Shop had this to say about Giants coach Tom Coughlin: "Tom Coughlin was a great guy. He was great for my career, but as a coach I didn't respect the way he treated players. Everyone asks about my retirement. Why I was walking away. Why I was forgoing the peak of my career. It was because I didn't feel like I was being respected as a player."[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] You have got to be kidding me. JAX - WR Williams Faces Uphill Battle Source: Vito Stellino, Florida Times-Union The Jacksoville Jaguars issued their first depth chart Monday for the preseason opener Saturday night against Miami. WR Reggie Williams was listed as the third-team receiver behind Dennis Northcutt on the first team and Charles Sharon on the 2nd team. HC Jack Del Rio usually downplays the first depth chart of the season, but it's an indication that Williams will have to fight to win a roster spot. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Wow. We told you a few weeks ago that Vito Stellino was reporting that both Reggie Williams and Matt Jones were not just fighting for starting spots, but for roster spots. I still think there's no real way he doesn't make the team but he clearly has a battle in front of him. Right now, the Jaguars list Northcutt and Ernest Wilford as the starting WRs. Source: Jason King, Kansas City Star Chiefs RB Priest Holmes' interview with the Kansas City Star includes his perception of the Chiefs this season, his long road to recovery and his goals for himself and the team. Q: What do you think your role will be? A: "It depends. There's been a lot of speculation. One would be to (set) a good example by making the team again. Getting back out, showing that you can be hit and fall down and get back up and keep running. The expectations this year are (still) in the making. "It's great to have y'all out here viewing this greatness that's about to take place with this team. I'm telling you, it's a great team. It's going to make a much-needed impact. Not only for our Kansas City fans, but for our owner and his family after everything that's happened within the last year." Q: What's your timetable right now as far as getting back out there? A: "My timetable changes every day. As they see me improve, they believe I can just jump back out there and get in the pads. But it's still a process. "I have to recover from 22 months off. I think we can wind it all down within the next 3 1/2 weeks. Slowly get myself back into shells and then get back into action. The biggest thing is taking contact and then continuing to run." Q: Was today a big step, getting the shoulder pads and helmet on? A: "Today was a big step. They say I might want to add an oxygen tank with those pads since it was my first time putting them on. "Regardless of the struggle, it's not about the perception of the pain I'm enduring, it's about the perception of where I'm headed. Glendale is the spot where we're trying to get to. That keeps me encouraged and helps me get through the struggles and battles I'm going through right now." Q: Is your timetable more optimistic than the team's? A: "We'll gauge it around them. Even after all the valuable years I've put into my tank, there's a lot in me still. "As a PUP (on physically-unable-to-perform list) you've got until the third preseason game to make that next decision. But right now with all the progress I'm having … I haven't had any setbacks despite the pain, the swelling and the joint stiffness. But that's all secondary to the reason why I'm out here, which is to make this team and help this team be even better."[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The Larry Johnson holdout is made even more worrisome by Priest Holmes riding back into Kansas City on a white horse to save the day. Does he have anything left? He surely does if you believe what he's saying. The uncertainty here is a major league concern for Larry Johnson. I personally am shying away from him and letting other owners take the risk early in the first round. NO - LT Brown Injures Knee But Not As Badly As Feared Source: David Brandt, Clarion Ledger The New Orleans Saints breathed a collective sigh of relief tonight when word came that All-Pro left tackle Jammal Brown will not miss a substantial amount of time because of a right knee injury. Brown was injured in practice this morning at Millsaps College and had to be carted off the field, leaving players and coaches to wonder if his season was over before it started. But coach Sean Payton said after this evening's workout that Brown could be back on the field in a matter of days. "It's just a bruise," Payton said. "He may not play on Friday against Buffalo, but overall it's very good news. We'll just take it day by day."[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Great news for Brown. It looked bad when it happened but fortunately, he should be back soon. CIN - Bengals QB Palmer Downplays Knee Brace Source: Mark Curnutte, Cincinnati Enquirer Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer had his surgically repaired left knee wrapped in a brace for Monday morning's practice session. Palmer had worn a fabric sleeve on the knee or nothing at all since training camp began. "Nothing's wrong," Palmer said after practice. "I'm going to wear it all year, and I'm just getting used to it again." Palmer was back in the fabric sleeve for the night practice. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] You sign up for the Daily Update because you want to know everything. There it is. Palmer's wearing a hard brace on the left knee but don't worry about it. It's a smart move for right handed QBs (Peyton Manning's worn one for years) to protect that lead foot in the pocket (something Palmer unfortunately knows too much about). TB - Buccaneers Release First Depth Chart Source: St. Petersburg Times The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have released their first depth chart of the season. Luke McCown is the No. 2 QB behind starter Jeff Garcia. More surprising is that Chris Simms is listed third, ahead of Bruce Gradkowski. First-round pick Gaines Adams is a backup at right defensive end behind free agent Patrick Chukurwah. Maurice Stovall is listed as the No. 2 receiver, ahead of former first-round pick Michael Clayton. Joey Galloway is the other starter. Alex Smith is listed as the starting tight end for the first time in his three-year pro career, ahead of Anthony Becht and Jerramy Stevens. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] This makes sense to me. Simms is easily the 3rd best QB and will be #2 soon I think. And Michael Clayton still seems lost. I'm liking what I'm seeing of Stovall as the #2 WR. DEN - TE Scheffler Returns To Practice Field Source: Andrew Mason, DenverBroncos.com Denver Broncos tight end Tony Scheffler returned to the practice field on Tuesday. His time was limited, as he went through calisthenics and installation drills, running a few routes before retreating to rehabilitation work. "We tried to work him through about a 30-minute period, trying to get him used to running some routes," Shanahan said. "He's still a ways away." [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] This is looking better for Daniel Graham. Jay Cutler looked very comfortable in practice Tuesday throwing to Graham. Cutler had a fantastic connection to Scheffler last year but he looks to be quickly getting comfortable throwing to Graham. It's clear he likes to find the TE and Graham could earn some of that huge contract if Scheffler remains limited. BAL - RB McGahee Showsing Resolve Source: Jamison Hensley, Baltimore Sun Baltimore Ravens running back Willis McGahee showed off his strong running up the middle at today's practice. On four straight plays inside the red zone, McGahee powered his way in between the tackles before reaching the end zone on a one-yard run. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] McGahee has lots of Ravens fans excited and with good reason. He's much more explosive than Jamal Lewis was and the team is ready to use their new weapon. JAX - WR Wilford Injury Not Serious Source: Vito Stellino, Florida Times-Union The Jacksonville Jaguars announced Tuesday that WR Ernest Wilford did not suffer a serious injury to his left knee when he went down after catching a pass in practice. The Jaguars did not announce what the injury is or how quickly he'll return. Wilford fell awkwardly after catching the ball and appeared to be writhing in pain while lying on his back and had to be helped from the field by two members of the training staff and couldn't put any weight on the knee. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Good news for the Jaguars and Wilford owners here. He's had a nice camp so far and was listed as a starting WR on the first depth charts released for what that's worth. Let's watch him closely to see how looks in the next few days. MIN - Vikings RB Peterson Sits Out Morning Workout Source: Judd Zulgad, Minneapolis Star-Tribune Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was on the field for the morning practice Tuesday but did not take part. Peterson suffered a hip pointer last week, and head coach Brad Childress said the team doesn't want to push the rookie. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Not a huge deal but we told you we'd watch this one for you. I'm expecting big things from Peterson this year but he absolutely has to shake the "injury prone" tag. MIN - Vikings RG, RT Spots Still Open Source: Bob Lurtsema, Viking Update, Scout.com With the left side of the offensive line sound and secure, the Minnesota Vikings still have yet to determine who will join the starting lineup on the right side. The right guard spot boils down to veteran Artis Hicks, who started 14 games last season and Anthony Herrera, who has been getting the bulk of first-team snaps this offseason. The right tackle job is being sought out by second year OL Ryan Cook and veteran incumbent starter Marcus Johnson. Cook appears to have the lead in that race. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Offensive line continuity is a huge bonus. And it's something the Vikings don't have here. Although that left side is one of the best in the league. On the right side, it looks like they've got capable guys to plug in. I think they'll be fine. DEF - NYG - LB Wilkinson Dislocates Kneecap Source: Mike Garofolo, Newark Star-Ledger New York Giants LB Gerris Wilkinson has a dislocated kneecap, according to someone who has spoken to Wilkinson since the injury. The person, who requested anonymity because all injury information is supposed to come from HC Tom Coughlin, said Wilkinson will probably miss two to four weeks, though his progress in the next week will determine how long he'll be sidelined. The person said Wilkinson is not currently scheduled to undergo surgery. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Tough news for Wilkinson but at least it happened early enough in camp that he should be ready for the regular season. DEF - CHI - NE - Bears Trade CB Wesley To Patriots Source: Brad Biggs, Chicago Sun-Times The Chicago Bears completed a trade with the New England Patriots Tuesday morning, sending cornerback Dante Wesley for an undisclosed draft pick. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The Bears trade another defensive back away to stockpile a draft pick. They recently traded safety Chris Harris to Carolina for a draft pick. DEF - CAR - Panthers S Minter Officially Retires Source: Mike Cranston, Associated Press, Charlotte Observer Carolina S Mike Minter announced his much anticipated retirement today after 10 seasons with the Panthers. "I thought about it long and hard," said Minter, who has been struggling with aching knees. "I don't want to be at 80 or 85 percent, but want to be remembered as a player who always played at 100 percent." [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Best wishes to Mike Minter in whatever he pursues next. DEF - MIA - Dolphins LB Porter To Miss At Least Two Weeks Source: Associated Press, ESPN Miami Dolphins LB Joey Porter will miss at least two weeks, and maybe most or all of the preseason, after undergoing his third arthroscopic surgery in two years on his right knee. "They decided to go in and take a look at it," Dolphins HC Cam Cameron said. "They do say it's something minor." The surgery was performed by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., after Porter went to him for a second opinion. Details of the procedure are still unknown. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Finally some closure on the Porter knee situation. After much talk about second opinions and whether or not surgery was necessary, they elected to have Dr. Andrews do his work. The team is really downplaying the severity of the procedure but I want to see him in action. Two weeks sounds extremely optimistic but we'll see. That'll do it for today. Have a great Wednesday and we'll see you tomorrow with the update. J |
