DEF - DEN - Broncos Rookie DE Moss Injures Knee ATL - Falcons TE Crumpler Out At Least One Week Source: Steve Wyche, Atlanta Journal-Constitution Atlanta Falcons TE Alge Crumpler received an outside medical opinion on his arthroscopically repaired right knee last Friday and is expected to miss at least another week of practice. Crumpler watched practice Monday from the sideline, and declined comment, which is standard practice for him. Crumpler has only taken part in a handful of the team's 15 practices since training camp opened July 26. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Mike Vick? Warrick Dunn? It only makes sense that the Falcons best available player in Alge Crumpler would have trouble too. Good grief. Let's give him a week and see how he recovers. DAL - Cowboys WR Owens MRI On Back Is Negative Source: Tim McMahon, Dallas Morning News Dallas Cowboys HC Wade Phillips said today that WR Terrell Owens went for an MRI on his sore back. Phillips didn't seem too worried. "We feel sure that he just has back spasms," Phillips said, "but we don't want to take any chances." Owens has missed many practices already nursing the injury. Owens' MRI came back negative, putting aside fears of a more severe injury. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Good news for Owens and about what we expected. Sounds like it's just back spasms. I also don't rule out a little bit of "Training Campitis" here as well. In the big picture, not a big deal. But it's good to know the MRI was clean. SEA - LT Jones' Shoulder Ailing Source: Danny O'Neil, Seattle Times Seattle Seahawks left tackle Walter Jones did not participate in practice on Monday morning, the fourth day he's missed with soreness in his shoulder. Most around camp are not alarmed and see it as nothing more than veteran bumps and bruises. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] You old timers know that for Jones is no fan of training camp. We're not too worried about this and I'm leaning toward the "veteran bumps and bruises" the Seattle folks are thinking. DAL - Rookie PK Folk Favorite To Kick For Cowboys Source: Mac Engel, Fort Worth Star-Telegram It appears as if rookie PK Nick Folk has taken the lead over Martin Gramatica to see who will handle kicking duties this season for the Dallas Cowboys. The rookie draft pick continues to display a strong enough leg on kickoffs and has been successful in field goal attempts. Unless he collapses in the preseason, he's the favorite by many to win the job. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] For you guys that draft a kicker with the last pick (like me), remember Folk. He'll possibly be under the radar of some guys in your league and he should be kicking for a strong offense. Source: KCChiefs.com Even though recently signed wide receiver Dwayne Bowe won't play this week in the Chiefs pre-season opener, HC Herm Edwards is not dismissing the possibility of Bowe starting for the Chiefs in the season opener. "Yeah, (he has) the potential (to start.) But when I look at starters those receivers to me are going to play in this system on a rotation (basis) with three or four of them. We want to keep them fresh. He has the ability to have a role but now he needs to stay healthy for one." [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The current weak state of Kansas City WRs works to Bowe's favor a bit as he's got a shot to break into the starting ranks right away. I have a hard time getting excited about any of the Chiefs WRs with Brodie Croyle or Damon Huard under center, especially with Larry Johnson's situation still up in the air. ARZ - Cardinals TE Pope Has Strong Hold On Starting Job Source: Kent Somers, Arizona Republic Arizona Cardinals tight end Leonard Pope has locked-up the starting tight end job for the team, according to Kent Somers at the Arizona Republic. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Pope is the only TE we've got projected for stats so this is no surprise. The only trouble for him is the team has some extremely talented WRs and a RB in Edgerrin James and there just aren't enough footballs to go around. NE - Patriots QB Brady Nowhere Near Retirement Source: ESPN New England Patriots QB Tom Brady, who recently turned 30, indicated he planned on playing for as long as he was healthy on Monday. "If Vinny [Testaverde] can play till he's 43, I hope that I can play at least half of that, 37, 38. I'll play as long as I can. Everyone always says, 'Don't you want to retire? You're going to get hurt.' I said, 'You know what? There's nothing more fun than this.'," Brady said. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Bad news for the rest of the league here... Source: Shalise Manza Young, The Providence Journal The New England Patriots released RB Quadtrine Hill from their practice squad on Monday. Hill was signed to the practice squad in January. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Tough news for the BlackEyedJoe.com All Name team RB here. Keep your head up, Q. NE - Patriots WR Stallworth Officially Off PUP List Source: Shalise Manza Young, The Providence Journal New England Patriots WR Donte' Stallworth was officially activated off the physically unable to perform list on Monday and returned to practice. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] I know defensive coordinators around the league were hoping Moss will pout, Welker will wake up, and Stallworth would stay on the PUP. Don't think it's gonna happen. MIN - Vikings RB Taylor Back At Practice Source: Kevin Seifert, Minneapolis Star Tribune Minnesota Vikings RB Chester Taylor returned to practice on Monday after sitting out most of last week with a bruised forearm. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] After a scare last week, it looks like Taylor is fine. Keep a close eye on this one though as Taylor is a fairly significant obstacle to rookie Adrian Peterson seeing a ton of playing time. I still think Peterson's talent will earn him the bulk of the work though. DEN - WR Stokley Starting On Initial Depth Report Source: Andrew Mason, DenverBroncos.com Brandon Stokley is listed as a first-team wide receiver along with Javon Walker in the initial depth chart released by the Denver Broncos. Domenik Hixon and Brian Clark are the second-teamers, while David Kircus and David Terrell are on the third team. Quincy Morgan and Glenn Martinez are fourth-string and rookie Marquay McDaniel rounds out the wideouts on the fifth team. Brandon Marshall is currently on the PUP list. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] This is not the picture Brandon Marshall owners were hoping to see in early August. It's still early but it is absolutely time for Marshall to get things healthy and in gear mentally if he's going to make an impact. In the meantime, Stokley is rising up the rankings as he does look to be recovered and his head is definitely in the game. PHI - Eagles WR Curtis Catching On Source: Reuben Frank, PhillyBurbs.com Philadelphia Eagles free agent wide receiver Kevin Curtis is catching on to the system. "We've been here about a week, and it's football all day long, so I should be getting better," Curtis said. "It's all new to me, but it's been an easy adjustment. I don't claim to have it down yet, but I'm getting there." Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said, "He's getting better every day, about two days ago, I thought, "He's getting real comfortable with what we do. ... A couple of routes and things we do, he did it just perfectly. He understood exactly what we wanted in those situations." [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] I'm excited about Kevin Curtis in this offense. We see him as the #2 guy behind Reggie Brown. Yes, that's going way out on a limb and saying he'll be better than Hank Baskett... Seriously though, Curtis brings a nice element to this offense and should help QB Donovan McNabb. DAL - Cowboys HC Phillips Downplays Tirade Source: Mac Engel, Star-Telegram On Monday morning, Dallas Cowboys HC Wade Phillips tried to downplay the tirade he directed Saturday afternoon to his players, saying, "That's really an internal matter and it's taken care of, and how I handle my players and work with my team is really my own way. From what I know, I just read it in the papers and saw it on TV, they did respond the right way. The players that were late apologized to me later on, and they apologized to the players on the team. That's where it went." [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Followup to the story from yesterday. We knew Phillips would have to show the nicer guy side soon enough. MIA - Dolphins RB Brown Misses Practice Source: David J. Neal, Miami Herald Miami Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown was excused from Monday morning's practice session to attend an Uncle?s funeral. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Not to worry about Brown. This was an excused absence so don't panic and drop him for Lorenzo Booker or anything like that... NO - Rude Welcome For WR Meachem Source: Benjamin Hochman, New Orleans Times-Picayune The Saints' first-round draft pick was sprawled on the field, medical trainers surrounding him. WR Robert Meachem, one play after making his first NFL catch, received "the hardest hit of my life." In the Hall of Fame Game Sunday night, the wind was knocked out of Meachem by Pittsburgh CB William Gay. But after Meachem caught his breath, reality took place. He had dropped the pass, and when Meachem returned to the field later in the drive, another pass was thrown his way in traffic. He dropped that one, too. "I have a lot of work to do," said Meachem. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Definitely a tough start for Meachem. The QB didn't do him any favors setting him up for the huge hit by Gay. It'll be interesting to see how he responds from here as this was clearly a rough beginning. DEF - IND - HC Dungy Confirms Severity Of DT McFarland's Injury Source: Mike Chappell, Indianapolis Star Indianapolis Colts HC Tony Dungy confirmed after this morning's practice that DT Anthony McFarland suffered damage to the patella tendon in one of his knees late last week. "We don't know the full extent of it," Dungy said. "It's serious. It's something where he's not going to be back in the next 3-4 weeks...It's a long-term injury." "We've lost guys and other guys have stepped up,'' Dungy said. "We've got some guys that (the injury) will mean a little more playing time for.'' That includes returning veterans Darrell Reid and Dan Klecko and rookies Quinn Pitcock and Keyunta Dawson.[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Follow up on the story from yesterday. This is exactly not what the Colts defense needed to hear. Overcoming injuries is part of what makes great teams great. We'll see how the Colts do here. DEF - DEN - Broncos Rookie DE Moss Injures Knee Source: ESPN Denver Broncos first round draft pick DE Jarvis Moss suffered an injury to his left knee during 1-on-1 pass rushing drills on Monday. Moss was taken off the field to undergo an MRI and other medical tests. "They really don't know, they think it's a twist. It's not loose right now, which is a good sign. But until you look at that MRI, you're not really sure," HC Mike Shanahan said. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Let's keep our fingers crossed for Moss here. Stay tuned. That'll do it for today, Folks. Have a great Tuesday and remember that Footballguys Subscription. We'll see you tomorrow with the update. J |
