Spotlight On: High Stakes Contests

National Fantasy Football Championship

Description of Contest:

The National Fantasy Football Championship will consist of 43 leagues, each comprised of 14 teams. The NFFC will host simultaneous live drafts on Saturday, Sept. 4th at the New York Hilton (1 p.m. EST draft time), Chicago Oakbrook Marriott (Noon CST) and Flamingo Las Vegas (10 a.m. PST). Leagues will draft in serpentine fashion through 18 rounds and each team will then start 10 players per week in head-to-head competition. An imaginary $1,000 Free Agent Allocation Budget will be used by each team in a blind bidding system to acquire free agents each week after the draft. The NFFC regular season will extend from Week One of the NFL regular season through the 13th week of the regular season. Teams will compete head-to-head in a points scoring system and at the end of the 13 week regular season the two top finishers in each league will advance to a 3 week playoff to determine the overall champion. Teams will carry their average weekly score into the playoffs and accumulate points during Weeks 14 through 16 and the team with the highest point total will win the $200,000 grand prize. Each league champion earns $5,000 and payoffs are to the top three teams in each league and through the top 10 overall. Cost of entry is $1,250 and there are no additional Events Fees or hotel requirements. Principal managers and co-managers (an additional $100) will receive a goodie bag of promotional items before the draft, eight pre-season fantasy football publications, shirts, hats and more from the NFFC. The NFFC will also host Auction Leagues and Draft Masters Leagues in each city on Friday, Sept. 3rd, with $600 entry fees and individual league prizes ($4,000 for first) for the top three finishers.

Contest Summary:

Of course. Legally you have only two options: 1) Pay out the stated overall prize money no matter how many teams you acquire or 2) Offer a refund to every team owner. The NFFC will be no different.

Draft - Live or Online?: Simultaneous live drafts in three cities on Saturday, Sept. 4th. Auction Leagues and Draft Masters leagues will be held individually in all three cities on Friday, Sept. 3rd.

If Live, Where/When: Flamingo Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas
New York Hilton, New York City
Chicago Oakbrook Marriott
Sept. 3-4

Associated Events with Live Draft:

The Las Vegas event follows the 10th Fantasy Sports Trade Conference that will be run by Krause Publications, featuring 140+ industry executives. We will also have Welcome Receptions and Expert Q&A sessions in each city, along with the Auction Leagues and Draft Masters Leagues.

Famous Persons Participating:

Meat Loaf and actor Nick Cassavettes competed in our National Fantasy Baseball Championship and Meat Loaf will know in July after his acting gig is finished if he can join us for the football event. Thanks to our Fantasy Sports Trade Conference being held in Las Vegas, we believe we will have several industry experts in the NFFC, just like we had for baseball.

Fantasy League Structure:

  • Number of teams in each division? 14

  • Head to Head or Total Points? Head-to-head determines the league champion, total points determines the second and third place finishers in each league and total points will be used to determine the overall champion.

  • Weekly Lineup Requirements? 10 starters: 1 QB, 2 RBs, 3 WRs, 1 Flex (RB, WR, TE), 1 TE, 1 K, 1 D/ST

  • Trades Allowed?: Absolutely not.

  • Free Agent Pickups Allowed? Each team has an imaginary $1,000 Free Agent Allocation Budget for a blind bidding system to acquire free agents after the draft through Week 13.

  • If FA allowed, describe method: Each team will submit a blind bid on a player before Friday's deadline and if they have the high bid in their league they get that free agent. Teams must allocate their $1,000 FAAB, yet be aggressive when the next Anquan Boldin or Domanick Davis emerges.

Why is your contest/game unique?

We are the only multi-city high-stakes event/contest and our goal is to expand to more cities in following years. There are several die-hard fantasy football players who want to compete for this large grand prize, but can't afford the time and expense to travel to Las Vegas or Atlantic City for the draft. So we'll bring that to them with our multi-city drafts. We are also the only high-stakes contest with 14-team leagues, which presents unique drafting strategies and a tougher competition.

Final thoughts?

Fantasy football players have a lot of choices this year in the high-stakes market and the prize pools sound good on paper, but I want everyone to know they can feel safe playing in the NFFC because we have been a leader of this industry for the last 15 years and we plan on being around for many years to come. We started Fantasy Sports Magazine in 1989, we created the Fantasy Sports Trade Conference in 2000 and our NFBC and NFFC models will succeed in 2004 and grow in size and number of cities for years to come. We're here for the long haul, not the short-term gain.
