You could argue that some running backs are more injury prone than others. One might claim that being an every-down, every-game running back tires a player out, and that it's easier to look good with a lighter workload. But sometimes, I just want to see how a player performed when he actually played.
I looked at the top 50 fantasy running backs from 2009 and noted how many quarters in which they played. I included overtime quarters, so it's possible for a running back to play in more than 64 quarters (and Knowshon Moreno did just that last season). If the running back had at least one rush attempt or one target in a quarter, he gets credit for playing in that quarter. But if a player gets hurt early in the first quarter, his production in that game will be divided by just one-fourth of a game instead of a full game. By using a more granular approach to per-game numbers, we can really see which running backs played well in 2009 -- at least, whenever they were on the field. The table below shows each running back's fantasy stats in 2008, along with his rank among running backs, his fantasy points, fantasy points per game, numbers of quarters played, and fantasy points per 4 quarters played.

Michael Turner scored 279 fantasy points in 2008, a 17.4 per game average. He didn't miss a single quarter in 2008 (and he played in an overtime), which means he averaged 17.2 fantasy points per four quarters two years ago. Turner averaged 17.0 fantasy points per four quarters in 2009. You'll hear lots of comments about why Michael Turner was less productive in 2009 than in 2008; the numbers say that, at least when he was on the field, he was equally productive in both seasons.
